7 secrets to making a killer first impression

Check these out, too...

  • Send the cutest, easiest thank-you note ever
  • So you got an awful gift. Now what?
  • How to be the queen of hearts
  • Master a middle-of-the-year move
  • I don't want to leave my friends behind when school ends
I’m starting a new school this year and I really want to nail my first day. How can I make a great first impression?

The secrets to making a positive first impression are nearly as mysterious as you might think. All you have to be is your sweet, charming self. But paying attention to these seven focus areas will help ya bust the new girl nerves and gain the confidence you need for your big first day.

Stop fussing

You know how when you’re nervous, you touch your face a lot or twirl your hair. It’s time to put a stop to bad habits. Remind yourself that you look great, and those locks don’t need any more smoothing, thank you very much. If it helps, peek into a compact or duck into the girls’ bathroom to reassure yourself that your outfit and makeup are in place.

Smile

You don’t need to plaster one on to rival Miss America, but popping a grin will set your soon-to-be friend at ease and show that you’re happy to be there and to make a new bud…even if your belly is doing back flips.

Be sincere

There’s nothing worse than talking idly to an individual who clearly doesn’t care about what you have to say. Come up with a genuine conversation starter, like, “Oh wow! Your shoes are so cute!” to kick things off, and then lets the chatter flow.

Ask questions

If the convo is stalling, pull out some tried-‘n’-true questions. Ask how her summer break was, who she has for English, any advice she can dish for navigating the halls—anything goes! If you’re talking right before the bell, don’t blabber on and on since you both have somewhere to be. But do show an interest.

Listen up!

Speaking of showing interest, it’s wicked important that you actually listen to what your would-be-pal is saying and to remember it. File details like her passion for karate and karaoke away so you can use them the next time you speak. Maybe she’ll invite you to a class or sing-off!

Make eye contact

I know you’re nervous, but staring at your shoes isn’t gonna help. You shouldn’t stare her down, but do make eye contact as you speak. It shows that you’re actively listening to what she has to say instead of critiquing her outfit or looking for someone else to chat up.

See ya later!

Feelin’ good friendship vibes? Make casual plans to see her later—in homeroom, lunch, on the bus, after school, whenever. Everybody likes to have plans, especially on a hectic first day.

Good luck, girlie!

Mod Well I'm starting a new school I'm going into grade 7 this would be my third school in the last 3 years. I'm really nervous about making friends because at my last school I bounced around a lot with friends and only had one friend who is my bestie that I really stuck with. I really need advice so I don't screw up this school. Thanks

Hey girly girl! As scary as it is, this is kind of exciting in a way! Think about it, you can totally reinvent yourself to be whoever you want to be. Do you want to try a new fashion style?Get more into sports? Theatre? Anything else? You can do it! My best advice would be to get involved in a lot of different things that you enjoy doing. That way, you'll meet people like you, and you'll have a bigger friend base! Smile

MOD MOD MOD ... I am starting at a new school, and am going to the open house. One girl I have met before has invited me to go with her and hang out with her after the open house. I want to be able to make friends with people at my new school, but she seems to like to hang out with the cooler people but is not really one of them. I guess, she's like what people call a wanna-be, and I had someone like that at my old school, and we were enemies a lot of the time. I'm just not sure I want to be friends with someone like that, but I'm not really sure what I should do. I don't want to Already be like bffs because she was the first one I could really hang out with before I meet everyone else, but I don't want to go there without something I know I can really be sure of and not go there being clueless and made a fool out of because I am more of an antisocial loner. I am shy and get nervous and anxious around people that aren't my family. What do I do?

Hey girl! Just because you didn't like girls "like her" at your old school doesn't mean things won't be totally different at your new school.  You don't want to judge someone before you even meet them.  Hang out with her.  You don't have to be BFFs, but having a friendly face will help during the first couple days at school.  If you two don't hit it off, you don't have to be friends with her forever, but she might be able to introduce you to other girls and help you make friends.  Good luck at your new school! xoxo

MOD MOD MOD!!
So my bff wants to set me up with her bfs friend because she says we have everything in common. She thinks we would work out great together but I'm not attracted to him at all. I told her this and not to set me up with him yet at least and she said ok but now I'm wondering if I made the right choice???

Hey chica! You absolutely made the right choice! It isn't fair to go out with this guy if you aren't feelin' it.  Think of how you'd feel if the situation were reversed, you would want your feelings spared. xoxo
