7 secrets to making a killer first impression

Check these out, too...

  • So you got an awful gift. Now what?
  • How to be the queen of hearts
  • Master a middle-of-the-year move
  • I don't want to leave my friends behind when school ends
  • How to get closer with a girl you kinda sorta know
I’m starting a new school this year and I really want to nail my first day. How can I make a great first impression?

The secrets to making a positive first impression are nearly as mysterious as you might think. All you have to be is your sweet, charming self. But paying attention to these seven focus areas will help ya bust the new girl nerves and gain the confidence you need for your big first day.

Stop fussing

You know how when you’re nervous, you touch your face a lot or twirl your hair. It’s time to put a stop to bad habits. Remind yourself that you look great, and those locks don’t need any more smoothing, thank you very much. If it helps, peek into a compact or duck into the girls’ bathroom to reassure yourself that your outfit and makeup are in place.

Smile

You don’t need to plaster one on to rival Miss America, but popping a grin will set your soon-to-be friend at ease and show that you’re happy to be there and to make a new bud…even if your belly is doing back flips.

Be sincere

There’s nothing worse than talking idly to an individual who clearly doesn’t care about what you have to say. Come up with a genuine conversation starter, like, “Oh wow! Your shoes are so cute!” to kick things off, and then lets the chatter flow.

Ask questions

If the convo is stalling, pull out some tried-‘n’-true questions. Ask how her summer break was, who she has for English, any advice she can dish for navigating the halls—anything goes! If you’re talking right before the bell, don’t blabber on and on since you both have somewhere to be. But do show an interest.

Listen up!

Speaking of showing interest, it’s wicked important that you actually listen to what your would-be-pal is saying and to remember it. File details like her passion for karate and karaoke away so you can use them the next time you speak. Maybe she’ll invite you to a class or sing-off!

Make eye contact

I know you’re nervous, but staring at your shoes isn’t gonna help. You shouldn’t stare her down, but do make eye contact as you speak. It shows that you’re actively listening to what she has to say instead of critiquing her outfit or looking for someone else to chat up.

See ya later!

Feelin’ good friendship vibes? Make casual plans to see her later—in homeroom, lunch, on the bus, after school, whenever. Everybody likes to have plans, especially on a hectic first day.

Good luck, girlie!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD!
I have two things!
1. I want to start shopping for bras at VS PINK, and there is a problem. I only have $110 and there bras are so expensive! I need to use my money for BTS clothes. Should I wait, and save up later?
2. What are some tips for kicking off 6th grade with a good start?

Hey girl!

There are plenty of other places you can buy cheaper bras so that you have money for your BTS clothes too. Target has a good bra selection. Starting 6th grade probably seems really scary, but it doesn't have to be! You'll have more hw than you did in elementary school, so being prepared for that is key. You'll learn how to manage your time a little better. You should try and talk to lots of different people because you never know who might end up being one of your new BFF's!

Get your braces whatever colors you want! Honestly, you won't look like either a nerd or a metal mouth no matter what colors you pick.  Just go with your favorites! Matching would be cute! Jordan S.

MOD MOD MOD
I'm going to a new school there and at my old school i was in a lot of drama, how can i not get in drama at this new school i want this school year to be great. its a performing art school so there are lots of talented ppl. so that means competition.... i don't want any drama. but the good thing is i know a LOT of ppl there.. but still.. advice? any thing would help. ps. i dont start drama, i just always end up in it

None of the drama from your old school will transfer to this new one as long as you don't bring it there yourself, babe! Jordan S.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!! i am skippping a grade and transferring to a new school. at orientation everyone was so much taller than me. what do i do if i am made fun of?????

Hey girl!

You won't be made fun of!  They most likely won't even notice that you're a year younger.  After all, people the same age can even have very different heights.

You'll meet new people in no time.  As soon as you start your classes, you'll get to know people.  Promise!
