7 secrets to making a killer first impression

Check these out, too...

  • Send the cutest, easiest thank-you note ever
  • So you got an awful gift. Now what?
  • How to be the queen of hearts
  • Master a middle-of-the-year move
  • I don't want to leave my friends behind when school ends
I’m starting a new school this year and I really want to nail my first day. How can I make a great first impression?

The secrets to making a positive first impression are nearly as mysterious as you might think. All you have to be is your sweet, charming self. But paying attention to these seven focus areas will help ya bust the new girl nerves and gain the confidence you need for your big first day.

Stop fussing

You know how when you’re nervous, you touch your face a lot or twirl your hair. It’s time to put a stop to bad habits. Remind yourself that you look great, and those locks don’t need any more smoothing, thank you very much. If it helps, peek into a compact or duck into the girls’ bathroom to reassure yourself that your outfit and makeup are in place.

Smile

You don’t need to plaster one on to rival Miss America, but popping a grin will set your soon-to-be friend at ease and show that you’re happy to be there and to make a new bud…even if your belly is doing back flips.

Be sincere

There’s nothing worse than talking idly to an individual who clearly doesn’t care about what you have to say. Come up with a genuine conversation starter, like, “Oh wow! Your shoes are so cute!” to kick things off, and then lets the chatter flow.

Ask questions

If the convo is stalling, pull out some tried-‘n’-true questions. Ask how her summer break was, who she has for English, any advice she can dish for navigating the halls—anything goes! If you’re talking right before the bell, don’t blabber on and on since you both have somewhere to be. But do show an interest.

Listen up!

Speaking of showing interest, it’s wicked important that you actually listen to what your would-be-pal is saying and to remember it. File details like her passion for karate and karaoke away so you can use them the next time you speak. Maybe she’ll invite you to a class or sing-off!

Make eye contact

I know you’re nervous, but staring at your shoes isn’t gonna help. You shouldn’t stare her down, but do make eye contact as you speak. It shows that you’re actively listening to what she has to say instead of critiquing her outfit or looking for someone else to chat up.

See ya later!

Feelin’ good friendship vibes? Make casual plans to see her later—in homeroom, lunch, on the bus, after school, whenever. Everybody likes to have plans, especially on a hectic first day.

Good luck, girlie!

I really wanna be student body vice president. But I have to technically compete for president. But my friend is really competitive when it comes to that stuff and she told me that she didn't have anything to worry about cuz no one would vote for me. That kinda hurt my feelings! But I still want to compete for vice. Any ideas on how to win?

hey! don't let your friend get you down, just work that much harder to prove her wrong. In your speech just be genuine. Don't make unrealistic promises but do set real goals for things you could do for the class, then plan out ways to meet those goals. good luck!

Although school means at first, making the right impression, well I got a situation here... Ya see the day before school I am getting braces and I definately need the two right colors... This is because I have school pictures coming up and I don't know which colors to do without looking like a total dweeb!!! Because yellow or orange might make my teeth look gross and if I do my scoop colors, red and white, the white might look weird... And if I did blue in green that might be too dark... And also I don't want my shirt to go off with my braces!!! What do u suggest as my two colors? Sorry this is sooo long but please help and fast!!!

Hey girl, I'd try something neutral: is clear or white an option? Talk to your dentist about what he thinks is the most natural and would work best for pictures and give with that!

MOD!!!
My birthday is in two weeks, and my mom asked me what I want to do, but I have no idea! I'm turning 14 so I need some mature, but fun ideas, and I'm kinda on a budget. Please help me!!!!

Hey chica, why not have a bunch of friends over for a spa night? You could make your own face masks, watch a chick flick, and have DIY sundaes. Tons of fun!

Hi. I am a super positive person, but sometimes i still need help keeping my smiley , happy mood shining.I am a competitive soccer player. On my old team, i always used to be a starter. Most games, I wasn't substituted at all. Now, with my new coach, we just played a practice game. And i was a substitute. I'm SUPER upset inside, but i dont want to loose my cool, or start crying.
1) Is it okay to be upset?
2) How do I keep from crying or getting over-dramatic about it?
Help ASAP. Thanks for the advice mod. -Alyssa <3

Hey girl, nice name, first of all! On to your problem: 1) it's perfectly OK to be upset but realize that doesn't reflect on you personally. You'll play starter again. 2) By putting it in perspective. Remember, it's just for this game, it's not forever. Don't complain and show your coach you deserve to be out there.

hey ok so our grade is going a trip to chicago soon and my bff and i were gonna room together. then she texted me and said im rooming with someone else sorry and i cried my eyes out cuz she promised me. then a couple days ago she texted me and said im thinking of backing out of rooming with these people and i got so excited that she was gonna come back to me but then she decided she didnt want to deal with the drama of the other people being ticked becuz i guess she promised them too. i really want to room with her and i know i shouldnt convince her to do something she doesnt want to but im just so upset she ditched me. what should i do?

Maybe talk to her about it. ASk why she ditched you adn just get your feelings out in the open about the situation. By talking about it with her you may feel loads better even if you two dont end up rooming together. xoxo kerra
