I am 30 pounds underweight. I eat and workout the same amount as my friends, but while they gain weight, I don't. Why is this happening, and how can I start gaining weight?

 

You’re right that it’s not good to be underweight. Being too thin can make you more likely to be sick or delay your period. But how do you know you’re 30 pounds underweight? If you’re trying to calculate how much you should weigh yourself, you might not end up with an accurate answer. Eeven if you’re using a Body Mass Index chart, it doesn’t account for your muscle mass. The first thing you should do is see a doctor to find out where your weight should be – you may be healthier than you think! The doctor will also have tips on the best way for you to gain weight.

 

If you’re working out with your friends, what types of exercises are you doing? Try switching up your routine to include more strength training and weight exercises. Building muscle will help you gain healthy weight.

 

Changing your diet will also help – unfortunately, needing to gain weight isn’t a free pass to load up on ice cream. Try eating smaller meals more frequently and eating more protein, which will also help you build muscle (and never, ever skip breakfast!). Instead of consuming extra junk food, which could lead to heart disease or cancer, try to load up on healthy fats, like nuts or avocado, to help regulate your weight. Adding more fruits, vegetables and fiber to your diet will also help your body gain the nutrients it needs to help you grow properly. If you aren’t taking a multivitamin, a daily supplement (many companies make special formulas for teens and tweens, but you should check with your doc before adding one to your daily regimen) will also better your health.

 

If you’re eating a healthy diet and toning your muscles in addition to doing cardio workouts and you still think you’re underweight, you should see your doctor or even a nutritionist. He’ll be able to give you a custom diet and exercise plan that will help you be your healthiest and happiest. Be happy with who you are, and good luck!

Hi, I'm 14 years old 4'10 and currently weigh ___ lbs. Last year and the year before I was suffering with an eating disorder (a more rare kind, nothing to do with body image, more about food fears) and at one point weighed 48 pounds when I was 12 and had to spend christmas in the hospital because I fainted and my boyfriend found me out cold and called 911. So I've been visiting doctors since because it's left me with many health problems, and I have been gaining weight. Last year I had to have 5000 calories a day, it was awful. Now I had been 85 pounds and that was good but somehow I have no idea I dropped 10 within a week and when I went to the doctors I put weights in my pockets because I would make my mom worry if she knew what I really weighed. How can I gain more weight?! I can NOT keep losing it!!! I haven't had my period and it probably has to do with that. Do you have any tips, I've been doing everything the article says. Thank you so much!




Hey girlie,

You need to STOP trying to trick your parents and the doctors. You're scared to lose weight, so you need to speak up and talk to the doctors about this. I know eating 5000 calories a day was a bad time, but there are ways to gain weight without pigging out on gross foods. The doctors are the professionals - they know what you need to do to gain weight and get healthy again. Don't lie about your weight and take those weights out of your pockets next time. If you're struggling, be honest and say something. You might feel like you can handle it on your own because you're a strong, independent person. But there's nothing wrong with asking a doctor for their help - it actually shows a lot of strength! <3

I am underweight, I know I am. I am 14 years old and I weigh 85-91 lbs, tops. It may be that I have a fast metabolism, but I'm not sure. I have to admit, my eating is not at all balanced or healthy. I eat a nutragrain bar almost every morning (if I don't skip breakfast), and for lunch ill either have only a bag of chips or half of a sandwich (if I don't skip lunch). Even when I try to eat, I feel like I can't finish it, I get full so fast. When I get home from school, I snack a lot, so I'm not very hungry when dinner is served. I don't excersise anymore, because I'm so afraid ill lose more weight. I also haven't had my period in about 5 months, and I have a feeling my weight is contributing for this. I really don't know what to do! Please help me!




Hey Girl,

It worries me that you haven't had your period in five months. This does happen when you are underweight, so I would recommend that you see your doctor to get this problem sorted out. I'm not a professional nutritionist, so I can't tell you how to fix this problem, but you definitely need to eat more balanced meals. Since you get full fast, try eating five small meals a day instead of three bigger ones that you can't finish. Check out this post on eating more meals to get started. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so instead of skipping it or just eating a nutrigrain bar, try something with lots of protein and carbs, like eggs and toast. It takes more time but is totally worth it! Let an adult know about your issues so you can get on a healthy weight.

I'm 12, I weigh 85-90lbs. and I'm 4" 8'. And my stomach is flabby, my BFF has an amazing stomach and she runs alot, at school and stuff, is it the running? PLEASE PLEASE PLEAAAASE Help! I really hate my stomachh!!!!!

It's very possible that the running is helping her, but that alone won't do the trick.  The trick to a flat stomach is what you put into your body, aka what you eat.  But be sure to keep in mind that your body is still constantly changing.

I don't gain weight. I eat constantly, but have a super fast metabolism, as well as I'm naturally small boned. Anyways I'm just not sure what to do, i t really hurts when random stranges come up to you asking if your anorexic and when all your friends assume you have no muscle what so ever and say stuff like, "wow you threw that pretty far for someone with no muscle." Guys use the excuse that they want to measure how skinny my arm is, in order to touch me. I tell them to stop and they do, but the situation is just frustrating in general. Anyways I'm not really sure what to do, it has given me a low confidence.

I wish I could offer some great advice, but since I'm not an expert on metabolism, you should definitely have a conversation with your doctor. I know other people's comments hurt, but when you hold your head high and stick up for yourself, people will eventually stop saying rude things. You're beautiful and smart - you have no reason to have low confidence! Being comfortable with who you are is the first step to feeling better. Good luck chica Smile

Hey girl, sounds like you may be sick or eating something that doesn't sit well. Let your mom know and if this impulse continues for more than a week, you may want to ask about talking to a doctor.

MOD MOD MOD i used a mass body index chart the other day and it says that im almost overweight but im super healthy eat a balanced diet and work out ALL THE TIME i play 4 sports am i really almost overweight!?!?!?!?!?!?

 

The best way to determine how healthy you are, as well as weight requirements, is to talk with your doctor. They can tell you where you should be and how healthy you are/should be Smile

MOD MOD please help if you have a moment!! i am 14 and weigh 106-107. sometimes i weigh 104 and im 5'6-5'7 feet tall. i wanted to know if this was the sign of an eating disorder. my mom notices i dont eat a lot at meals and she says she can see my bones to. i thought i was just naturally skinny but now im not so sure. please help!!!




Hey chica!

It's really important to focus on how much you eat. If you're eating a lot, then I would say you don't have an eating disorder, persay, but you should definitely talk to your doctor about ways to gain a little weight. If you notice you're not letting yourself eat when you get hungry, that's when it's a problem. But it sounds to me like you're eating regularly so I would ask your mom to make a doctor's appointment for you to see if there's anything more that you can do.

My mom say that I have a high metabolism and she says when I'm an adult, my weight will catch up with me. Is that true? And if it is, should I watch what I eat more carefully?

You should probably be eating a little bit more than that. And you should definitely be exercising a few times each week to stay healthy and in shape. Talk to your doctor about everything to make sure you're doing what's best for your body!

I've been noticing I havnt been eating alot, I relized that I only eat a few cherries, and maybe a bite of a hamburger or something thats it thats all I eat. Im very conserned I was a good weight before now Im in the lower 90's Im 13... Im guessing its not a good thing. Can you please help!

I heard from my old health teacher that our average weight for everyone increased over the years and we bumped up the number for our healthy average weight. Who knows how many times this has happened. You might be at a normal weight if this were years ago. Only if I'm not completely misunderstanding what i was told then, this is true.Smile

I have many friends who are underweight and seriously most of them look fine. Anyways...if you exercise 5 times a week, eat healthy 5 times a day, and find more ways to be healthy you may tone up some.Smile Muscle helps you gain weight. Not just fat.

WHOA. this is really serious. first off, being underweight is way more dangerous than being overweight. when you dont have enough body mass and your losing weight, your body goes into starvation mode and starts to feed off your muscles, including your heart. this makes your heart very weak and your heart rate too low, which is really dangerous and you need to get checked immediately. people dont realize how many calories they need, since everyone tries to diet, but when you workout so much, you need more, and now that your underweight, you need even more to gain. ive been through this, and its really serious. also, you may think you eat as much as your friends, but you probably dont. try adding carbohydrates and dairy products to your diet as snacks in between meals three times a day, such as yogurt and a handful of nilla wafers, or milk and a granola bar, and ease off the excercise a little. i promise youll gain muscle with this and be much safer and healthier! Smile

today i was out in the sun for a long time, and forgot to apply on some parts of my skin. now the skin is all red, but it doesn't hurt. is it still a sunburn? how do i treat it? and i also have to go to the park tomorrow for an activity, and ill be in the sun again. is there any way to not make my sunburn become worse? thanks, and sorry its a bit long Smile




It's still sunburn, even if it doesn't hurt right now! It might feel more raw or tender later, and could still hurt or even peel (yuck, I know). Tonight, what I would do is apply an after-sun gel or lotion with aloe to soothe and moisturize the skin. Tomorrow, MAKE SURE YOU USE SUNSCREEN! And remember to reapply throughout the day <3

I'm not dieting and I'm growing a little bit, but haven't been a hungry as I usually am. I usually eat 3 large meals a day and snacks in between but now I eat 3 small meals a day and 1 snack. My mom says its not healthy because I'm an athlete and run off everything I eat. Is it healthy? ThanksSmile

Just be sure that you're getting enough calories -- if you run a ton, you need to eat more to support your body. If you find your appetite is different than usual, call up your pediatrician. She might be able to figure it out and get you back on a healthier diet.

Take it easy on your Mom -- she might really be busy. If she can't take you, maybe your dad or older sibling can. And if you really just can't wait, explain to your Mom that you don't wanna be left with the boring supplies. Hopefully, she'll understand and try and make it a priority. Hey Sweetie,

It's not just the number of pounds that determines if you're a healthy weight-- visit a doctor and they can tell you more accurately based on how much muscle you have, whether you have a small, medium or large frame, etc. But if you want a quick, less accurate answer, use the BMI (body mass index) scale.

MOD, how much sugar is okay to have in my breakfast every day? because I was thinking of baking breakfast muffins but each muffin has about 8g of sugar x x x thanks!




Hey Babe!

The trick is moderation -- if you eat a breakfast muffin with lots of sugar, then skip the ice cream in the afternoon. In general, though, it's best to choose a breakfast that will keep you going till lunch, and eating just sugary things will make you crash fast and eat more than you need to.

Here's the truth: everybody is shaped differently! We have different figures because we're different people -- it's all about genetics! Only a doctor can tell you for sure if you're overweight - you may be fine for your height, or have a lot of muscle. Eating more fruits, veggies and whole grains will help anyone be healthy, though!

this morning i was eating freeze dried strawberries and i started chewing on that packet they say not too eat. i dont think i swallowed any becuz i rinsed my mouth out like four times
will i be ok?

If the packet didn't open and you spit it out and washed your mouth out, you should be fine, but if it opened while you where chewing you may have swallowed some of it. You should probably ask a doctor to be sure.
