Are you the bully? Beat bad behavior before BTS!

Check these out, too...

  • My bestie isn't acting like a very good friend
  • My friend sulks if I do better in school than her. Help!
  • Bullies on the bus
  • Bullied by teacher? Yep, it totally happens--tell us your story
  • Get those bullies out of your head: Tune out the torturers
Bullying has grown up. It’s not just about that big knucklehead beating up a scrawny li’l kid in the back of the playground. Harassment takes many forms, and cruel words over the Internet or a few mean comments to a friend can sting just as much as any physical violence. Are you guilty of that kind of conduct? Don’t be the mean girl another year. Here’s how to bust bullying behavior for good!

If you don’t have anything nice to say…

We’ve all been there: Your bestie asks if you like her new shirt, and to be honest, it’s totally not your thing. But before you let her know what you think of her taste, think about how the poor girl would feel. Fashion victims have feelings, and your brutal comments will probably ruin her day. That’s not to say you should lie, but if you tend to go for nasty remarks, you need to filter what you say. You can be open, honest and a good friend without being hurtful – just think about the consequences of your actions before you do the deed.

Be sensitive

Everyone has insecurities. Maybe you can’t stand your hair or you’re super self-conscious about your ears. You aren’t alone, everyone has those soft spots. So if you know your girl is embarrassed by her voice, don’t mock her with a funny impression. It’ll hurt more than anything else you could say, so joke about something else. Someone’s insecurities shouldn’t be your punch line.

Bust your own stress

Bullying is often a result of being unable to deal with your own problems. Grades got ya feelin’ blue? There’s no need to put down every A+ student in your class. Whether you’re fighting with your bestie, struggling with your sis or fretting over family finances, bullying won’t solve anything. Instead, direct your energy to fixing the situation. For more ideas on how to save yourself from stress, click here.

Apologize!

Finally, get a fresh start by making a sincere attempt to start over. Saying sorry can be hard, and sometimes even awkward, but it’s worth the chance to start anew. Promise you won’t repeat your bad behavior, and when school rolls around, stick to your no-bullying resolution. Good luck, girls!

I'm going back to school next week, and there's this girl I really don't like. She thinks we're her best friends and she follows us around and never leaves us alone. How can we kind of subtly show her we're not really interested in being her friend without being mean? Btw, she's really naive, we already ignored her and even literally ran away from her one time and she didn't get it. Thanks!!

Hey girl,

You ran away from her? Ouch! (Have you ever read the Pretty Little Liars books? Mona, anyone?) What's so bad about her that she can't hang out with you and your friends? Try letting her hang out with you and your friends before you push her away - she might be a lot cooler than you thought. If you still don't want to hang out with her, you should at least give her a reason, like that you don't share common interests.

MOD MOD MOD MOD!
Hi. So I'm pretty sure I have an anxiety disorder. Almost every night, I feel like I'm going to die, and the nights I don't, I feel like someone is going to come in and kill me. It gets to the point I need a phone at my bedside. Also, I feel like I have to do things the exact same way every day or something bad is going to happen. When I'm in a bathroom stall, I have to make sure I can get out of it in case the door is jammed. I hyperventilate a lot and often, when I have a headache or something, I think I'm going to die because of it. I've been taking tests online, and they're saying I should seek help in case I do have an anxiety disorder. I've tried to tell my parents, but they say I'm just "growing up" and I'll forget about it. How can I get them to see this could be more serious than they think?

Hey girl,

Having parents distrust you is never easy, but only a professional can diagnose you for sure. If you can't get your parents to take your worry seriously, talk to your school's guidance counselor. She'll have recommendations for you and will be able to talk to your parents if that's what you want.

I want to make new friends this year, but I was kinda mean last year and the friends I had were what was left. I changed my attitude and am ready to start over, but everyone already has their 'group' of friends and I don't wanna try to get in it, that's just awkward.
Should I try to make friends with people I already sorta know? There's a girl in a couple of my classes who was in my Home Economics class last year, I think we could be good friends.
What should I do??

Hey girl,

Congratulations on changing your attitude! If you explain your new outlook to your friends from last year, they may be willing to give you another chance. If not, definitely make new friends, in your classes or in clubs.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!
My very close friend in school is going through a rough patch in her life. Now she's taking it out on me. At first I didn't mind the harsh words, but now she's making fun of very personal things. It got to a point were i wondered which Emma (not her real name) I was going to talk to mean Emma or nice Emma I tried to talk to her about her life and how I don't like the "rude names" she's been calling me but it just got very awkard and she clamped up. Before the summer I got so mad that I shouted at her about how I'm going through a rough patch to but I'm not bagging on her and now we're not talking soon I have to face her again and i have a feeling next year is going to be worse. HELP!!!!

Hey girl,

It sounds like your friend is dealing with some pretty serious stuff that she's not ready to talk about with you, at least not yet. That doesn't give her the right to be rude to you, though! Try to sit down with her and explain that you won't judge or make fun of her, and that you want to help her through what she's dealing with, but you aren't going to put up with her being rude to you. If that means you have to give her some space for a little while, tell her you respect that and you'll be there when she's ready to be kind again.
