Fact or fiction: Virgins can't use tampons

 
I have been using pads the year and a half that I've had my period. I want to try using a tampon but my sis said you have to have sex first before you can use a tampon and I'm too scared to ask my mom. Can I use a tampon even though I'm a virgin?

 

Yes, you absolutely can use a tampon even though you’re a virgin. When a girl has sex, her hymen is broken, but this can also happen while playing sports or during an accident. However, whether or not a girl’s hymen is broken has no effect on using tampons, so both virgins and non-virgins can use ‘em.  You might want to set your sis straight on that. 

 

Tampons are great to use if you’re tired of pads or feel like they’re not giving you the protection that you need.  Even though you were scared to ask your mom about this, she’s a great source of info and can help with all your period questions.  Tampons can be a bit tricky at first, but don’t hesitate to get help from your mom or doctor—they’ve got lots of helpful info.

Hey girlygirl/tomboy, maybe you aren't using the right size. Try using tampons a side smaller and see if that helps. Even the angle you insert it could be causing pain. Try propping one leg up on the bathtub and putting it in then. Hope this helps!!! Xoxo

I got my first period in February and it lasted for exactly 48 days. A gynecologist put me on birth control for a month to stop it and now that I'm out of pills I have my period again. Its extremely heavy and I get insanely horrible cramps.
1. What medicine will help with cramping? My mom refuses to buy Midol or anything because Ibuprofen works for her but not me.
2. My mom just yells at me and laughs whenever I have female questions so instead I look here or ask my best friend who has had it for three years. I want to start tampons because I'm a very competitive swimmer. I tried it twice but I was too afraid to get it actually in.

If not, ibuprofen does usually help cramps, but if you're still in pain, you should talk to a doc to see what she recommends.

It's totally normal! Every girl gets discharge, both before and after her period. Click here to read more about it - the yellow color just comes from it drying slightly on your undies. If it's vibrant yellow or green though, you might wanna ask your doc just to be safe!

Hey!!! I havent gotten my period yet but have been getting some brown discharge and sometimes (sometimes)some reddish brownish color. I showed my mom and asked what it was and she said that the colors were normal and that I might get my period soon. And my breasts have been sore too.... any words of wisdom ??? :p

Hey girlie,

That sounds like the start of a period to me! It's possible that it's just spotting (and that your full period won't start just yet), but keep an eye on it and be prepared by carrying a pad with you in your purse. Chances are, it'll get heavier over the next day or two!

Hey Sarah_Scoop, no I don't think that will happen. A girl always knows when she's on her period, so leaving a tampon in won't make you forget. And if you don't need to wear a tampon then don't put one in. Kotex has some good products so check them out. Hope this helps! Xoxo

i had my period of the first time last month. i asked my mom for a note for pool (our class goes swimming like, once a week) and she wrote one, but then she said how i should try and start using a tampon because i shouldn't miss pool that often. i know she meant well, but i'm not sure about using a tampon. i don't know where to put it! plus, my period isn't supposed to be regular every month, so what if i go swimming without even knowing I'm on my monthly! i think i might be over thinking this a bit, but i'm still worried. please help, thank you!

You've got it - you are over-thinking it ;) You use the bathroom throughout the day and you'll also feel cramps before your period, so you'll definitely know if you need period protection! Plus you could try using the bathroom just before pool, just to be safe. Try to relax about that <3 As for the tampon, read these articles for tips on using them. I use them and know TONS of girls who do - you can do it!!

Ask your dad if he'd be willing to let you make an appointment with a female doc or nurse to discuss the benefits and risks of tampons, and how to put them in. If there's a professional involved, maybe he'll let up a little. It's hard for him to take on the female side of parenting, and he's probably doing the best he can, so let him know that you appreciate what he's doing but that you think you're ready to wear tampons. Hey girl, your hymen can break by doing a number of different things. Activities liking riding a horse or bike, or doing gymnastics can break it. I don't think there are strong chances of your hymen breaking with a tampon, although I'm not sure. As long as you get ones that are small and feel comfortable for you, you should be okay. Hey girlie,

First, about the tampon: keep trying! Your bod will get used to the tampons and you'll have an easier time with more use. Once it's in as far as it's supposed to be, you won't feel uncomfortable wearing them at all! And it always feels a little weird inserting/taking them out, but you get used to that too. And you get faster, so it's a snap! Smile




Now, about the yeast infection. You will DEFINITELY notice the itching and/or burning sensations coming from "down there." It won't just feel like it's itching on the outside either - it'll kinda feel like it's itching all over, including inside. Sometimes it also comes with thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge. If you have either of those, get to your doc! It's no big deal - I've had one and most girls will experience their first before they turn 25. The doctor can prescribe creams/treatments that get rid of it really fast - which will be a BIG relief if it's itching! <3

Hey! When do you think I will get my period? I know that you can never tell for sure, but I want an estimate?
I have
-breasts that are a 34A that have been developing for 2 years
-pubic hair (it is like a forest LOL)
-acne
-leg hair
-underarm hair
-discharge (quite a bit, but never seen in my underwear. However, I have only had it for roughly a month or so. I've noticed that there has been more recently. It is clear)
-mood swings
-cramps
My doctor said I should be getting it this school year, but I know it is impossible to tell for sure. My mom got hers when she was 16, due to a medical problem, but my grandma got her's when she was 12.
Please, anything you can tell me would be fine! I really want to have an estimate. I know nothing can be set in stone of course.




Hey girl, honestly, no one can tell you the exact date; no one knows. The best advice I have is to be prepared with pads but realize it doesn't matter when your mom or grandmother got it. When you get it will be completely unique. It's just important you're ready for when it does come.

I just got my period like three days ago. Its been really heavy and even though i use strong pads, blood always leaks on my undies. is this normal? i have tried using tampons, and i want to know how often to change them. Also i am in 6th grade. we dont carry our bookbags around, we have big lockers.i want to know how i can sneak a pad/tampon into the bathroom without anyone knowing. thanx for ur help!




Keep changing your pad. Dont let it stay on for too long. IF you do that you wont have leaks. As for getting pads to the bathroom buy a cute little bag to put them in so its discreet. Also tampons should be take out no longer than 8 hours after putting it in. So you could change it every 4 to 8 hours. Good luck! xoxo kerra

I use tampons AND a pad but blood still goes through my pants one morning me and my bro were sitting watching TV but when I stood up to get a drink he said "ummmmmmm Vic there's blood on the back of your pants" I had to tell him why I was soooooo embarrassed is there anything else that can help stop all the blood or at least make it less blood I feel insecure when I go to school and I'm on my period. Hey chicky, you should try getting thicker, stronger pads. Always has some really good ones. You also have to switch your pads throughout the day. Girls with heavier flows, have to switch pads all throughout the day so be sure to do this. Hope this helps!!!! Smile Smile

Hey girlie!

Your hymen is a thin membrane layer that partially covers the vaginal opening.  It is not broken, but rather it stretches the first time a girl has sex.  No, a hymen being "broken" has absolutely nothing to do with how one gets pregnant.

Hey honey, there are instructions included in the box on how to put them in. Your mom may not let you wear them because she probably feels you're not yet old enough. Tampons can be uncomfortable at first and yes it may hurt a little so just take your time.

Chances are, you'll go through bunches of inconsistencies during the first few years of your period.  There's no definite reasons that we know of; but, stress is a factor.

Hey chica! Applying tampons for the first time is a bit uncomfortable. You may want to use pads instead and wait until you are a bit older to wear tampons. It also could be that you aren't inserting the tampon correctly. Ask your mom and sister to help you.

Hey chica! Your body isn't used to tampons, so its going to feel uncomfortable at first. However, I would definitely go with the lowest absorbancy ones until you get more used to them.

So I was reading all the comments people said and I saw one that said you can't get sick from wearing a tampon for less that 8 hours.... So if you wear them for more than 8 hours and get sick how will you know you are sick? Like is there and symptoms?

You won't get sick like a cold or fever - but there is a very very small risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), which is a rare disease that is linked to the use of super tampons and leaving them in for longer than recommended. Read our article about it here for symptoms and more details.

Of course not!  Girl, you still have lots of growing in store for you!  How tall you get or how curvy you get has very little to do with your period. Most girls continue growing in some way or another up into their twenties.  If you want an idea of how tall you'll get, take a look at your family.

Tampons not = to losing it.

Tampons are great, they are the only way we can swim and do gymnastics and other activities, and you do get used to using them. But you do reach a point where you start to think about things down there, like whats sex like, its only natural to have those thoughts. But I dont think tampons are anything like sex, like they are much smaller and yes maybe using the lube is kind of the same but you definitely dont lose your virginity from a tampon.

Your sis doesnt know what she is talking about. She needs to go back to sex-ed class if she thinks you need to have sex first before you start using tampons. The hymen thing is important because that will break when you start having sex but it can also break from doing sports, riding things like horses and from using vibrators or putting things inside of you.

And if you do start using tampons putting small amounts of lube like KY jelly lubricant or Astroglide will help them slide in easier. Believe me tampons dont make you lose your virginity.

You gotta make sure to change your tampon every 8 hours (preferably less) and youll be fine! If you keep a tampon in for too long you can get sick and possibly die. But if you follow the 8 hour rule youll be perfectly fine!! Smile xoxo kerr

Hey girl, you don't/can't: there's no way to tell the magic date. All you can do is be prepared with pads and know if you're PMSing: headache, moody, increased hunger and fatigue, bloatedness, etc.

So i recently started using tampons and their so much nicer! i never had trouble but when you do put them in i found there's a tiny bit of blockage right before you insert it properly. my bff always wear's pads and when we go to the beach she doesn't take her shorts off etc.... she really likes to have fun and i'm really upset that she doesn't wear tampons. she wants too and always tries to get it in but the little 'blockage' always stops her and she won't push past it and gives up easily. HELP!!!! i really want to help but coaxing her outside of the bathroom really isn't working -_-

Do u know of any place I could get cheap neon sports bra, any color neon shirt, and neon shorts? I need this in a few days and really need help! When i was younger i was at the park swinging with my friends and i jumped off. I landed on my foot and accidentally kicked myself down there. Later there was some blood and i haven't seen anymore blood until i actually got my period, but that's not the point. Did i break my hymen?




Hey babe! You definitely could have broken your hymen. It can break for tons of different reasons, horseback riding, using a tampon, or something else. It's not a big deal, but there's not really a way to tell, other than asking your Gyno. xoxo

i dont have my period yet (im in 7th grade) and only 2 of the girls in my class have it. i always bring pads with me, in my purse, at sleepovers, in my backpack, but i have opened one before and they are HUGE! now i think tampons look better but im scared they are gonna hurt more. what do u think is the best? and dont just say it depends on the person, please! thanks in advance!!!!




Hey babe! It takes a while to get used to both options.  For pads it kind of feels uncomfortable because it feels a little like a diaper... but they're fine after a while. Aso for tampons, a lot of girls are afraid to use one at first, but it can totally be worth it, especially if you swim. It can hurt at frist, just because you may be nervous, but you'll get used to that too. So as much as you don't want to hear this, it really does depend on the person. Both are fine, a lot of girls use both, depending on the day. So don't be afraid to try both of them. Also, there are different sized pads for light days, heavy days, and overnight pads. So you can try slimmer ones too! xoxo

When I take my tampon out after swimming, I don't really get my period for the rest of the day. Why does it do this and is this normal? And can I wash down there when I'm on my period?




Hey cutie! You should definitely be washing down there especially when you have your period. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about if your period doesn't come after being in the pool. Water relaxes your muscles, so that's probably why. xoxo

the first couple of times i put in a tampon correctly it hurt really really bad when it was going in why is that

 

I hate to say it, babe, but it's pretty normal for the first few tampons you put in to be a bit uncomfortable or painful. Why? Because you haven't found the right insertion angle yet. Keep trying and changing up the way you slide in the applicator to find just the right position, and you'll be comfy in no time!

Recently my scalp has been kinda dry and itchy. THe thing is, I am using this special hydrating shampoo+conditioner that my mom got for me at the hair salon! Should i switch my hair products or something? What should i dooo?

 

How long have you been using the shampoo/conditioner? Sometimes they take a little while to work. It's possible that your S&C (or other hair products you use) have a chemical in them that's irritating your scalp. You might want to grab an inexpensive dandruff shampoo at a drugstore to see if the switch helps.

But if im with my dad or grandma who never let my mom use tampons because of that rely tampon recall in the 80s what do I sayi dont want them to get noisy thinking I had sex

 

Hey girl! That's a tough sitch. It's really nobody's business what you use during your period--you should use what you're comfortable with. Be discreet, and if it becomes an issue, ask your dad or grandma to talk to your mom about the decision.
