5 ways to be a total team player

Acing tryouts and impressing Coach isn’t just about your hard-earned skills and natural talent. Make sure to show off your cooperative and collaborative side, too. We’ve got 5 ways to be a great team player, no matter what team you’re on!

1. Never complain. It’s important to look on the bright side. When on a team, it’s super easy to start whining when the people around you are miserable too. If it’s cold and rainy during practice, catch yourself before you complain about how nasty the weather is. You will just bring yourself and your team down. Instead, crack a joke or point out the good side.

2. Be loud and spirited! Embrace the saying “loud and proud.” Encourage parents to cheer loudly at games, and root for your teammates when you’re on the sidelines. Even in practices, if you have accomplished something together, congratulate your team and give them high-fives. Fans and friends will follow your lead and get excited, too!

3. Be a leader. Put yourself out there and show you are dedicated to the team. Offer to get the water cooler before practice. Volunteer if the coach asks for help. Don’t be afraid to run at the front of the pack or go first for a drill. Your commitment will be appreciated.

4.  Be competitive, but keep it fun. A little healthy competition is a good thing. Keep your teammates motivated in practices and games by keeping things interesting. Challenge a teammate to a race while running sprints. Make a bet on who can score the most goals. You will keep practices fun and your teammates will like hanging around you.

5.  Try your hardest. Obvi, you always wanna give 100 percent to your team. Even if you’re having an off day, working hard will inspire your teammates to do the same. Push yourself. You can do more than you think you can!

Great ideas for making the team! As a coach, these are definitely things I look for at tryouts. One more thing: dress to stand out. Like orange socks or a neon t-shirt. Or do braids if you dare. If I see a player doing things I like, especially if there are a lot of girls, I need a way to remember her. It's easy if I make a note: "orange socks, great first touch."

One other thing - bully coaches are out there. You're right that you need to get help if you can't manage it yourself. Sometimes parents are reluctant to talk to the coach because they think their kid will lose playing time. Often, a teacher, counselor, administrator or activity director at the school is the place to go. Don't go mad. Just bring the facts and bring reinforcements. You and some friends can have a strong voice together.

Thanks for the great advice and great magazine.

MOD? Hi, i'm joining soccer with NO experience at all. I figured I like the idea of it, all of my friends are on the team, and it's a good opportunity to get fit. But i'm still really nervous, what should i do? thanks!

Hey girlie!

That's great that you're thinking about getting fit! If all of your friends are on the team then why not ask them to help you prepare?  You can put together a hang out sesh to sharpen your skills before tryouts.  They're on the team already, so I'm sure they can give you some handy tips.

MOD MOD MOD!!! I have a talent. I'm excellent at every sport i do, without even trying. People always come up to me saying, "WOW! your sooo goooood!" Im getting fed up with people being jealous that I beat them at THEIR sport. Im even thinking not doing any sports, AT ALL. I'd rather have people like me then not do sports. Any help on how to get over this? I'm just sooooo confused :/ Thanks Mod Smile

Hey girl, don't give up sports because of other people! You have athletic talent, don't just throw it away! Maybe just try hanging back a little when your playing in gym class, and let other people take the lead so they aren't jealous.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
I play middle school soccer for my school, and our coach is awful. I know I should listen to what he's saying, not how loud he's saying it, but it's mean stuff. He'll tell us we're lazy, and that we need to run faster. He almost gave two girls asthma attacks last practice! If you're hurt and you're just warning him that you won't be playing your best, he gets irritated. The other day, he yelled at one of my friends and said "What's wrong with you?! Why aren't you stepping into the ball?!" He doesn't listen to us, if we tell him we need to do something different about our line-up, he just ingores it and is convinced he's right. Sorry it's so long, but please help!!

hey! try telling your parents or some other teachers about his behaviour and see if they will intercede on your behalf. good luck!

MOD MOD MODD!!! i started cross-country running today, thinking it would be fun. (some of my friends are participating, and i've run races before with no problem.) ITS TOTALLY NOT. i was sweating like crazy, i was really nauseous, and i was the last one to finish the laps. i feel like a failure that i can't do it. what if i really can't? i'm scared that i'll hurt myself or something. what should i do?

hey! if you hate it that much you should quit. I had to go to a dance school i hated for a whole year because my parents didn't want me to quit, and I was miserable. but if you still want to pursue it you should just try harder and stay strong!
