What's an endoscopy?

Check these out, too...

  • Will my yeast infection go away by itself?
  • Why do my fingers turn red when I'm cold?
  • Why do I wet my undies after I go to the bathroom?
  • My throat's all phlegm-y!
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
I have been having major stomach problems lately, so my doctor recommended an endoscopy. I'm getting it done in two days and I'm really nervous! What should I expect?

Oh, babe, I’m so sorry you’ve been feeling so bad lately! While the extra tests—like an endoscopy—sound scary, getting over the nerves and going through with it will be worth it when you’re feeling better. Now, let’s get down to the facts.

An endoscopy is when specially trained doctors use an endoscope to look inside you. An endoscope is basically a teeny little video camera and light on the end of a long, narrow, flexible tube.

Depending on what areas your doctor wants to look at, the endoscope could be inserted down your throat or through your anus. While the procedure may be uncomfortable—you might be given a local anesthetic—it won’t last too long, probably around 30 minutes to an hour. They might decide to take a biopsy, or a small sample of something suspicious in your gastro-intestinal tract, but you shouldn’t worry about that. Just keep yourself calm and focus on feeling better again, and you’ll be just fine!

Good luck, girlie!

I'm getting an endoscopy done tomorrow because im having major stomach problems. i know it won't hurt but I'm still scared. What if something goes wrong? What can I do to calm down?

Hey girl,

It's normal to be nervous before a surgery, but trust that your doc knows what she's doing and that it's what's best for your health! Think of how much better you will feel afterward and you won't dread it as much. It will be over before you know it!

I have had one of these. They are not as scary as they sound, your ussually under an anesthesia so you don't feel too much of it. My advice is to calm down and let the docters do thier thing, they are trained proffesionals.

I had an endoscopy earlier this year, and it's much different than what was said in the answer. For kids, you almost always go to the hospital and are put completely to sleep with general, not local, anesthesia. Not sometimes- always. But you aren't asleep long (less than an hour) and pretty much everyone feels fine when they wake up- I was just tired. And also, an endoscopy does not go through your anus- that's a colonoscopy. Don't stress at all- this was easier than any other test I've had done, even a CAT scan. And, as an added bonus, my endoscopy diagnosed a rare condition that we wouldn't have found without it! Feel better soon and good luck!

So I've been getting these sharp pains in my side when I cough or sneeze. I got one today from just shifting positions. Also, sometime's when I stand up I get these black spots all in my vision and I feel a little dizzy. Then everything starts to come back to normal. I hadn't gotten them till like this year. Any clue what these are?

Hey girlie,

This sounds like it could be dehydration, fatigue, or stress causing these issues. Whatever it is, if it continues much longer (like over the course of a week without stopping), personally I would call my doc just to make sure it isn't something more serious!

If you have a stomach issue they will go through your throat, I dont know if I could deal with that. If they they need to get past your stomach they will go through anus. That sounds weird but I saw them do it to some guy on tv. Yes, it was ew!

endoscopy is video inside our bodies, that is just amazing.

My friends are so mean to me!  They tell me i'm flatchested and all and they keep telling me i'm to skinny that i have chicken legs and arms!  How do i get them to shutup about my body and how do i find self confidence in myself?

Hey girlie!

Your friends should not treat you that way!  It may seem to them to be in the name of good fun, but it messes with your head.  Developing self-confidence can take time.  You have to be okay with yourself, know that you're a great girl and that you're beautiful in a way that's just yours, that nobody else can have but you.

I had i thing done exactly like that and a biopsy. They knocked me out and i guess i woke up about 15 min later and didn't feel a thing. This was after recovering from a stomach ulcer so they wanted to make sure it was all gone. The worst part was probably that I wasn't aloud to eat at all until after they were done!

I have one done too. If your doctor said endoscopy then it will be insterted down your throat. But they give you sleepy medications so you cant feel it. They have to spray your mouth with nasty stuff to make sure you won't gag. Afterwards your throat feels really weird. but in the end its fine.

Okay so a few weeks ago I fainted three times in one day!!!!!!! The doctors never found the problem, so I returned to my normal life and everything, but since then I haven't been normal. I feel a lot of nausea and feel like I'm going to puke and/or faint. I feel like that all the time! School starts in two days and I'm terrified. I'm afraid that I will faint or puke front of everyone. To make it worse, my parents made me sign up to run cross country. This morning I went on my trampoline and felt so sick and like I was going to faint. Now, on and off during the day I feel like that and it's horrible. I really want to run cross country but I am just really scared. Help??? Am I the only one who this has happened to???
Thanks

Hey babe!

While you're definitely not the only person this has happened to, this is definitely something you want to talk to your parents and a doctor about. Tell them all of your symptoms and concerns so they can help you figure out what's going on right away!

Hey girly! Of course it's possible to reignite your friendship. Can you talk to her online, since you're afraid to call? If not, I'd give calling a shot. If her mom does answer, you'll only have to talk to her for second or two, tops Smile

this is mostly just so that the author sees this comment maybe?

well anyways im 14 and i had an endoscopy done like maybe 1 or 2 years ago? and the truth is it is somewhat uncomfortable especially when eating, so don't eat anything like steak. and it also feels really funny when they put it in (and take it out). so overall the entire experience is not fun but also not the worst. lets put it this way.. getting stitches is waaay worse

I just found out my guy friend (and my ex) is gay. I really want to help him through this. Im the only one who knows. and I need advice to help him tell his parents, and other people. . . and advice to help both of us through this.

Hey girly! You should feel really honored that your friend trusts you enough to tell you something so big. However, the best thing you can do is listen to him when he needs it, and be supportive. Let him know that you're there for him and will be through everything. As for telling his parents and friends, that's something that he should do when he's ready. And, it's possible that he may not be ready yet. So, I wouldn't push him to come out. Just let him come to grips with it at his own pace. And, let him know that you're there for him no matter what.

I'm getting braces tomorrow, and I'm REALLY scared! Some people say it hurts, some don't. I've watched videos of people getting braces, and I'm still scared! What should I do? Please help!
Jordan

Hey Jordan,

I've had braces (I got them off a few years ago) and I can tell you honestly that most of the time it is totally fine, but sometimes your mouth will feel tight or raw depending on the stage of your braces-wearing. When you first get them, your cheeks and gums might feel a little sore because they aren't used to the braces being there. When you go back for check ups, your orthodontist might tighten the braces in order to coax your teeth into a straight line, so you'll feel pressure and possibly some mild pain in your tender gums. Nothing a lil Tylenol won't knock out Smile I also had a expander for about 6 months which went on the roof of my mouth, and that's the same deal - when it was "cranked" every week, my teeth felt tight and kinda tender until my mouth got used to it. But I never felt pain intense enough to distract me from what I was doing (homework, chores, sleeping, etc.) and I never felt enough pain to cry or complain!

Hopefully being honest about the types of sensations you might have made you a lil less scared! It's really nothing to worry about - tons of girls have gotten braces before you and have all made it through! Smile

Hey I'm thirteen and a vegetarian and I have a really small chest. I was wondering if being a vegetarian effect how you grow?

Hey girlie,

It can in some situations - like if you aren't getting enough protein or other vitamins that would normally come from meat - but not in this case, since your chest size really doesn't depend on your diet Smile
