6 easy ways to become a better runner

Hate being in the back of the pack? Here’s how to step up your skills and improve your running game in no time. Never dread another jog again!

R.U.N.
The only way to get in shape for running is to START running. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes, try to go for a jog every other day. Each week try to either add 8-10 minutes to your time or push the pace and speed things up. To keep your runs interesting, try a different route occasionally: It’s a great way to explore your area. Go with a buddy to stay safe!

Work on those abs
Your core strength is what supports you while you run. When you slump over and feel like you are about to fall to the ground, you are actually making it harder for yourself to breathe, and it is definitely not making you run any faster. To straighten up your back while running (and in everyday life!), start by doing 3 sets of 30 crunches and 2 sets of 20 bicycle crunches every other day. When you go for your runs pay attention to your posture by keeping your back straight and shoulders pulled back.

Hills
It’s time to tackle what ya dread: those hills! Start by finding 2 hills in your area, a small one and a big one, and once a week take a jog over to warm up. Try to begin with three sets of four runs up the small hills and two sets of four runs on the big hill. Keep at a constant run, even if it has to be the old man shuffle, and push through. Pump your arms and pick up your feet, and you’ll make it up in no time!

Intervals
We’ve said it before, but intervals are the best thing to improve your endurance and speed if you’ve hit a running plateau. Try running at a normal pace for two minutes, then sprinting for one minute, then slowing down again for two minutes. Repeat the cycle for a full 12 minutes.

Stretch it out
Nothing is worse than not being able to walk the day after a running workout. Make sure after every run you stretch out your arms and legs to keep from cramping up. Alternate hard and easy days. After a hard day, pay special attention to your calves, shins and thighs to avoid any injury.

Keep it fun!
Remember, this isn’t the 2012 Olympics you are training for, so make sure you are still having a good time. Bring a friend along with you or make a pump-up playlist to keep you motivated. And if you miss a day here and there it’s not the end of the world. Just slip on those sneaks and hit the pavement.

I want to start exercising more, not because I'm overweight but I want to gain muscle. I live in a rural area but when there are cars they go around 70 mph, so jogging isn't that safe. I can't go to a gym or do yoga classes because I live in a rural area. I tried wii fit but you don't burn that much calories or gain muscle. I try to do yoga but find myself bored with that. I do enjoy the workouts in the magazines but I can't seem to stick to them. And i feel awkward doing the tv workouts. Do you have any suggestions? Right now I'm kinda stuck, i cant seem to get motivated to do much of anything, and im not big on sports either :/

Hey girlie,

You have to overcome that awkwardness and use what you have available to you! You can't go to a gym and you can't work out outside - so you're going to have to find an alternative. Try kickboxing DVDs and mat pilates DVDs. Sure you'll feel a little silly at first, but you'll soon get a lot more comfy following their moves - and you'll feel results, which is the best part of all!

MOD MOD MOD
Ok so I really want (and need) to start working out. The only problem is that I need something to help keep me motivated to stick with it every day. My friends are always busy so they can't help me. Any ideas I can use to stay motivated???

Hey girlie,

Make a realistic calendar of all the workouts you'll do each day! Mix it up so you're doing something different every day - it'll spice things up so your routine isn't too boring. You could also reward yourself for making it through a whole week without skipping a workout, like spending your allowance on a new album or indulging in a little brownie. Lastly, you could keep a workout blog where you write down EVERY exercise you do each day. That way, if you skip out and don't have anything to write, you'll feel a little guilty writing, "Skipped my workout today." It'll motivate you to keep going so you have an exciting, interesting, and rewarding thing to say!

I want to try a new sport, but I am going to be in high school soon. Making the teams sounds really competitive. I am not happy with playing basketball and volleyball. I want to try a more individual sport. Any ideas?

Hey girl!

Why don't you try tennis? That way, you can play individually and sometimes play doubles. You'll get the team feeling you're used to and will be able to beat your own records. Have fun! xoxox

Take the stairs more than once. When you’re at home, run up and down the stairs three or four times before heading to your room. It’s a sneaky way to stay active.
