My "perfect" parents are keeping secrets

Check these out, too...

  • I have no talents. Why am I so boring?
  • How can I turn my attitude around?
  • 10 things to tell your mom anytime
  • I don't want to leave my friends behind when school ends
  • My dad is sexually abusing me. How can I tell my mom?
Everyone thinks of my parents as the Perfect Couple. They rarely fight. But I recently was at my Grandpa’s when he casually mentioned that both my parents had been married before. We talked about it a few minutes, and then I went home. I am officially upset! I can’t believe they never told me, and I am horrified by the ugly truth. How can I get my parents to tell me about it without ratting on my grandfather.

Dear Shocked,

Wow! I don’t blame you for being freaked out. You’re not alone—I’ve gotten similar letters over the years. Unfortunately, your parents weren’t up front with you, so you need to be straight with them. Say, “Grandpa let it slip that you two had previous marriages. Don’t get angry with him, but please tell me the truth.” Then, listen.

The truth doesn’t have to be “ugly.” If you want your parents to level with you, be understanding rather than judgmental. No doubt about it, this is mind-boggling. But hang on to your perspective because what hasn’t changed is this: Your parents love each other and love you. As for your parents being the Perfect Couple, there’s no such thing. But perhaps they are and will always be a Great Couple.

I'm right there with you. Last summer I found out that my mom has been married before and just last week I found out that my aunt is a lesbian. I'm not mad. Just hurt that they didn't tell me before now.

i'M A FRESHMAN AND i KNOW THIS OTHER GIRL WITH A SENIOR BROTHER. I REALLY LIKE HER BROTHER. HE'S CUTE AND NICE. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT SHOULD I DO. SHOULD I HANG OUT WITH HER AND HER BROTHER AND WAIT TO TELL HER. I THINK IT WILL BE WEIRD IF IM UPFRONT WITH HER ABOUT IT. SHOULD I WAIT TILL IM SURE THAT HE LIKES ME TOO AND THEN TELL HER I LIKE HIM? WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Hey girlie,

It's always good to be honest, but here try to tone it down a little: instead of saying "omg I love your brother!! Think we could date?", say something like, "I know this sounds so weird, but your brother is really cute haha." That way, it lets her know you've noticed without actually spilling just how much you like him. Also, make sure you aren't hanging out with this girl just to get closer to her bro. It's a strategy for sure, but using someone in order to get something else is super disrespectful.

MOD MOD!!! how can i get A's and B's? i dont want C's no more!! Smile

Hey girlie,

Try making a "to do" list with a planner or calendar! That way, you plan out your entire evening based on what really needs to get done. If you have questions, don't just hold them in - ask in class or meet with the teacher after class to chat. And try to remind yourself of your goal - that all the hard work you do will pay off in better grades. Sometimes you also have to sacrifice time with friends, time sleeping, or time online in order to get all your assignments done properly and impressively, not just done at the bare minimum. But if you really want A's and B's, I know you can do it!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD!
No guy has asked me to homecoming. I'm kind of disappointed. I thought in high school I would actually get asked to dances and stuff, but no. Today I saw guys giving girls flowers and asking them to homecoming and stuff and I feel bad. I know I shouldn't I just do. I met this one guy once and I felt like we clicked, but now I cant find him. There are some other cute boys, but They probably wont ask me. I know that you will say go with your girls and boys are shy and stuff, but I just wish some guy would come up to me and ask me to homecoming. I have a friends how has had 4 boys ask her and one of my friends has a date. I just feel left out. What should I do?

Hey doll,

It's hard to be positive about homecoming when it feels like everyone has a date except you. If you can't face going alone, why not try asking a cute guy yourself? Don't wait around for someone to ask you if you know that a guy you like isn't taking anyone. It's best to ask him in person when you guys are alone, like right after school or during a break in the hallway. But if you're too nervous to do it in person, you can casually ask if he is going to the dance through text or IM. All you have to do is ask him if he has a date for the dance yet, and if he says no, ask if he would like to go with you.

If you end up not getting a date though, don't let it ruin your homecoming. Make sure there are other girls in your group without dates and hang out with them during the dance. You guys will have the freedom of dancing with whatever guys you want and wont have to worry about pleasing a date all night. Just remember that you look great and have a super fun night!

There's this guy I like in class and I'm not sure if he likes me or not. In a re-enacting scene from a love story in ELA, I played the girl called Teresa who this guy named Victor likes and when asked what about Teresa made him love her so much, he said Ah! Her hair is just so beautiful and her cheeks are so fair- her lips are as red as a rose and a bunch of other stuff but I was so shocked I didn't hear much. He walked back to his seat and didn't look at me but he was smiling and when i was asked where I wanted to go on a date with Victor I said Sasebo burgers and ice cream. and when he was asked, he said the same thing which makes me think he was trying to propose a date! I'm confused, though. Does he like me or not????

Hey girly! Don't fret too much over this. It looks like he was trying to flirt with you a little in class, so I think it is safe to say that he may have a bit of a crush. See if he continues to chat it up with you, and if so, try asking him if he would want to take you up on that date to Sasebo Burgers and Ice Cream.
