Today, I had my first period, and it’s heavier than I
thought it would be. I thought that your first period was usually lighter than
what you would usually get. Does this mean I'm going to get even heavier
periods? Will it always be this heavy?
Congrats on your first period, babe! That’s a big milestone.
As for your questions, I wish there was a definite answer I could give you.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature works in mysterious ways, so sometimes you’ve just
gotta go with flow.
Girls seem to be divided largely into two camps: The ones
who get their periods bit by bit, starting with light spotting, and the ones
who get Aunt Flo full-on from the get-go. It sounds like you’re in the second
group. But not to worry, babe! Your first period isn’t an indication of your
upcoming periods, or the rest of your life.
With a heavy first period like the one you’re currently
experiencing, chances are your next few periods will be heavy, too. Be prepared
with thick pads or tampons. As your period begins to regulate—which can take
years, BTW—it should lighten. If it doesn’t, and your flow becomes
increasingly, painfully heavy, schedule an appointment with your doctor to talk
it out and see if there’s anything you can do to lighten your period.
