"What's the deal with the HPV vaccine?"


 
There are lotsa wacky rumors flying around right now about the HPV vaccine, a series of shots that can help prevent cervical cancer. We chatted up one of our fave doctors to help set the record straight. Here, Dr. Joanna K. Dolgoff gives her opinion on the vaccine:

“The HPV vaccine is very safe. The studies are unequivocal and it is not, in fact, at all controversial within the medical community. Over 35 million doses of HPV have been given -- and only 0.05% of patients noted any side effects; the side effects that did occur were mostly swelling, fever, fainting and nausea. There have not been reports of mental retardation following the HPV vaccine.”

The vaccine is by no means a green light to have sex and it certainly doesn’t protect you from all STDs, pregnancy or even all forms of HPV. But, it can protect you from a few common (and potentially deadly) forms of the disease. Remember to chat with your doc and your parents to figure out what’s best for you. I painted my toes with this clear polish the other day and it started peeling off so I started peeling it, I accidentally pulled of some of my nail and now I have a very painful hangnail. It hurts so much. It hurts all the time, when I step with my feet, when I try to put shoes/socks on, and when I move my toes. What should I do?

 

Hey girl! So, there are a couple of things you can do to help your hangnail. You can soak it in honey or olive oil which will soften the hangnail and ease the pain. Or, to get rid of your hangnail you can soak it in rubbing alcohol or salt water which will dry it out and cause it to fall off..hope this helps!

I'm 11 ( soon to be 12!) and I got it at my last physical in November, since my (male) doctor recommended it to me since he said most girls should get it around the ages 11-12. My last dose is in May. Honestly I HATE SHOTS, and HPV really stings when they injest it, but I reccomend it tons. I would not want surgery to get a tumor removed from my lady part.I also got the whooping cough vaccine, for my upcoming year for middle school.

Mod mod I think I may have to get the gardasil shot! Frown I hate getting shots to anyway my mom says that she's going to make me get it I'm in 8th grade and my doctor said that he doesn't recommend it until you start high school which for me is 10th grade I really don't want to get it! Idk what to do. So anyways I was wondering if when I go for a physical will my doctor(female) look down there? Because when I was 11 and had a physical my doctor(male) looked just to see how I was developing. But now that I'm older(14) do you think she will want to look at little more? Not like a gyno exam but maybe just like touching my vigina? And also do you think she will want to look at my boobs cuz I'm only a 30A and have been for 2 years Frown . I'm very petite I barely fit 00 jeans and I only weigh 78 lbs. So yah but I did gain 10 lbs in a year which was good. But ya so what will my doctor do during the physical? There is so much in the news about the HPV shot. I have friends and cousins who have taken the HPV shot. I think they want you taking them early because once you are vaccinated when you do end up having sex at least you are protected.

I didnt see on CNN about the mental retardation thing but CNN did go over that when guys spread it and give it to people there is less of a chance of them spreading it if they are circumcised. For some reason they said uncircumcised guys can spread it more easily. That does go along about what our teacher said recently about guys who are either circumcised or uncircumcised.

I am going to look into the information a little more online because I want to know more.

kay so i almost fainted when i got the shot. my mom said my face turned white and my knees became weak! im not even gonna have sex until im an adult so why do i have to get the shot now?!?! that shows how much my mom trusts me....

i got this vaccine and it made me SOOO sick. i past out and had a HUGE lump around the injection site. Worst vaccine reaction ever!!!!!!

I have a friend who is very clingy and never gives me any space. She embarrasses me in front of boys and I don't know what to do. I do not want to be rude but I have no clue on what yo do.




When she embarrasses you try to pull her aside and tell her to please not do that. Ask her to follow your lead as you flirt with the cuties. If you involve her in the convo and have her on your side then maybe she'll get better. xoxo kerra

I got this vaccine...yes, I had to get three shots, and it was painful, but not so much that it was unbearable. If you care about your future life, it's better to take precaution and get the vaccine. I did not experience any side effects after getting the shots except for a little aching in my arm for a few hours, and that was it. Even if you make the right choices, some things in life are beyond your control. So, it's better to be safe than sorry. You're more likely to get HPV than to become mentally ill because of the vaccine.

I promise you, these things hurt the MOST out of ANY shot. And I don't know if they still do this, but I had to get them when I was 10 (Im 13 now), and they had to give me _3_! Like, I got one, then 3 months later, I went back, and then 6 months later I went back for my last one. My uncle helped to develope the HPV vacciene, and he persuaded my mom to get me to get it, but he failed to tell us that I had to get 3! I think I was the geunie pig or something, because my sister is 11 now, and she still hasnt gotten them. Hmph! Lol!

I don't like this. My doctor has been asking me and my mom for years now, and we keep saying no. My friend got it, and she passed out on the spot. And I don't like that instead of teaching us not to make those wrong choices, they're giving us a medicine that will prevent some diseases instead of us facing the consequences.
