We Tried It: Going vegetarian for a day

Going veg isn't as hard as it seems. Try trading in bacon and burgers for a day you might end up liking the veggie way of life better!

To get started on your meat-fee day, have a protein-rich breakfast of whole wheat toast and peanut butter. Many vegetarians still eat dairy and egg products, but vegans don't eat anything that comes from animals. So depending on what you want to do, add either eggs or a piece of fruit, like an orange or a grapefruit, to make your breakfast complete.

If you usually eat lunch in the caf, trade in your turkey sammie for black bean burrito and a side salad or a whole-wheat pita and hummus. It's easy to eat a lot of junk food when you don't eat meat (French fries are veggie!), so make sure you're still steering clear of the battered and fried stuff.

Opt for yummy after-school snacks, like a plain yogurt with cut fruit or almonds. Oatmeal, carrots and hummus or apples and nut butter all make awesome snacks.

For din, pass by the pasta (you could nosh that any day!) and make your fam a veggie meal they'll heart. We like this paella, quinoa with chick peas and tomatoes, stir-fry or something Indian, like chana masala. Why not branch out, babe?

I used to think that vegetarians and vegan were CRAZY! I'd think to myslef, "HOW CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT MEAT AND CHEESE?!" But then my family and I tried to go vegetarian for 30 days. Not only did we go vegetarian for 30 days, but we went vegan, and have been for the past 10 months. It is SOOOOO much easier and yummier than I thought it would be. So in conclusion, it's really not as hard as it seems. Smile

@ tacoqueen- hey! its great that u wanna go veggie, and im so sorry ur parents dont like the thought of u being veggie, but u may still be able to persuade them. a good thing that ur parents may like about being veggie is that veggie burgers are actually way cheaper than meat, but to me they taste the same, if not better! also, remind ur rents that if ur truely veggie (and not a junk food vegetarian who only eats meatless junkfood) u will never have to worry about being overweight, having diabetes, and u'll get sick way less, since ur gonna be taking in so many vitamins. plus, veggie dishes are easy to prepare, cheap, HEALTHY, and most restaurants have vegetarian options other than just salads. you can also get ur protein from beans and veggie burgers rather than meat, and if all else fails, tell them its your body, and if u dont want to eat meat, u shouldnt have to. and u'll be saving tons of helpless animals lives!

I'm really thinking of turning vegetarian, I hate the thought of eating meat but my parents are very strong in the fact that I should eat what they eat. I know they won't become vegetarians and I was hoping you had some ideas for my persuading of them to allow me to eat as I wish.
