My room is an absolute disaster! My parents have had it
with me and, through I hate to admit it, I feel trapped myself. How can I get
it in order?
Dear Disaster,
If you could see my office, you’d know neat-and-tidy is not
my strong suit. But when I feel trapped, I force myself to clean up. Don’t get
overwhelmed—get started, bit by bit. Put on an upbeat playlist, and don’t stop
‘til the music stops. Then put on another if needed.
Start with the stuff on your floor or desk. Sort it into
three piles—put away, throw away, give away. Same with drawers—dump a drawer on
the floor and get sortin’. Ready to tackle your closet? Select items you hate
or have outgrown, and give them to someone younger or to a charity
organization. Stay at it all afternoon or just an hour a day for a week, and
you’ll be astounded at how much better your room looks—and how you feel.
Want some help? Ask a friend or sibling to help with your
room this week, and do hers next week. And then give yourselves a reward, like
a trip to TCBY. Yum!
