What to do when you're sitting next to a cheater

Check these out, too...

  • In the News: Exercise really does calm you down
  • 10 tips for acing your AP tests
  • 5 last-minute ways to lift your grades
  • 3 signs you need to give your study group the boot
  • How not to pull an all-nighter (and stay sane if you have to)
In Spanish class, I’m the girl everyone asks for answers. A few days ago, the girl who sits behind me—who is really bad at Spanish, to tell the truth—asked if she could pull my desk back so she could put her feet up on my chair…right before a quiz. When we got our papers back, our teacher announced that I got a perfect grade. And so did she. I don’t want to tattle, but I also don’t want her to cheat off me. What should I do?

It’s possible that Spanish finally clicked for this chica who sits behind you. But it’s also possible that she sneaked a peek at your quiz and copied a few answers. There’s no need to become a tattletale in a sitch like this, though if you want to tell the teach, you certainly can. Nobody should get away with cheating.

So what to do? Be your usual, friendly self, but don’t be a doormat. The next time somebody asks you for an answer, offer to help them figure it out, say, “Oh, I don’t know about that one,” or change the subject.

And for your next quiz or test, it’s time to go on defense. Round your back over your desk and move your arms over the page as you fill in each answer so nobody else can steal a glance at your paper. You don’t need to accuse anyone to stop the cheating. Just make it impossible for them to cheat off of you.

Good luck, girlie, and don’t be afraid to speak up!

MOD MOD MOD! I need help. My 5 year old niece and i knew each other since i was 3 (i"m nine now) But we still fight she hits me kicks me and anything like that. My mom and dad know and they tell me to tell them, but the they yell at me at me when i do tell them and they don't do anything about her. Sometimes she's nice and other times she's a squeaky little monster. Even my 3 nephews all together are better then one her! I"m worried my nephews will learn from her and try and hurt me. What should i do? I do nice things for her like once i bought her a doll and she didn't thank me for it. And she calls me names. She is a bully most of the time. I think she hates me. Sometimes she is sweet and other times she try's to rip my head off! She's a bully yet she has a lot more friends then me! Sorry this is so long(883 characters!)but i really need help with this! Thanks so much!

Hi sweetie!

You need to talk to your brother or sister and tell them about the way your niece treats you. The two of you need to work together to develop a plan to discipline your niece so she treats you with respect! xoxo

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
ok soo some of my best friends in the whole world are guys, but the problem is everyone says im a slut when i hang out with them because i have a boyfriend11 but i talked with him about it and he is totally cool with it , but they wont listen and keep saying stuff like that! my bgf's always pick me up and hug me and all that though, is it wrong?

Hey girlie,

It's not wrong at all! Everyone's relationship with their friends is different - if yours is playful and involves hugging, that's totally fine! The other people really need to mind their own business. As long as you've talked to your BF and he doesn't feel threatened or suspicious of your friendship with your BGFs, and you are happy with the relationship/friendships you've got, then that's all that matters Smile Honestly the other people are probably just jealous that you get along with guys so well!

Haha a while ago, this guy kept cheating off my math quizzes! I saw him, but I didn't want to tell the teacher, so one time I wrote in all the wrong answers (but put down the right ones in the margins). After he turned his test in I fixed them all. It was soooo funny!

Modmodmodmodmodmodmod!!!
Thx for answering mqy last question. My twin brother matt, my bff Trinity, my bgf Daniel and I all started a band. It's really productive and within a year we could get serious, but there's one problem: Abbi (again)! Our band is supposed to be secret until the talent show, but somehow Abbi is getting info about it. She knows everything about it except for what we have so far for our first song. She wants to join it, but she can't play any instruments and she said herself that she sucks at singing. If we let her join, she'll totally take control! Plus she's even asked to come watch us practice and give us "useful tips on what we suck at". HELP!!!!! Thx!

Hey girlie,

You need to figure out who is dishing all the details to Abbi and make sure it stops! This isn't Abbi's fault - she just wants to be included. It's whoever is spilling all those secrets before the big day! If Abbi asks again, just let her down nicely by saying you've all been practicing a lot and you'd love to do something for the next talent show, but you all have to focus now in the home stretch to perfect the performance you've already figured out. You could always try to spin it by making her your official cheerleader? Sometimes people like that - they come to rehearsals, bring snacks, cheer you guys on, give their opinions, etc. - but they're not directly involved, so you don't have to take their advice if you don't want to. Just try to get through the next few weeks (or however long til the talent show) and then it'll be over!
