MTV's DISconnected shows the dark side of being tech obsessed

Check these out, too...

  • Fash face off: Bridgit vs. Demi
  • 7 ridiculous caffeine-laced products (and why they just might disappear)
  • 8 BFF Reads: Characters' friendships you won't want to miss
  • Tune up your summer concert wardrobe with these picks
Are you totally plugged in all the time? While it’s normal to text, tweet and search YouTube for vids with your friends, MTV’s latest original movie, DISconnected, airing Monday, Oct. 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, explores the dark side of growing up tech obsessed.

Isaiah, Lisa, Maria and Tom are four teenagers who have very different means of expressing themselves digitally. Though they have never met in person, their lives intersect online. They all watch funnyman Isaiah’s comedic webshow, where he shares everything from his love of chocolate and weightlifting to his battle with bipolar disorder. Meanwhile, Lisa’s chatting up a cutie she met online, and she plans meeting him for the first time over spring break—and sending him raunchy photos. Maria’s a flirt who’s overly dependent on her cell phone to communicate with her boyfriend–to the point where he’s starting to feel smothered. And Tom’s the shy guy at school who writes amazing acoustic music, which has earned him online celebrity status.

The four teens’ lives are completely changed through an interaction online one night. While it’s not along the same comedic lines as MTV’s usual Snooki shenanigans, the movie really draws you into the characters’ online communication in an interesting way.

I’ll admit, I like to share my thoughts on Twitter, Skype, Facebook, Tumblr and my favorite website, Girls’ Life, with my friends. But this movie made me realize every time I type, my words impact someone else on another screen.

DISconnected is part of MTV’s A THIN LINE campaign, which raises awareness of the line between Internet use and abuse through TV shows, PSAs, web and iPhone apps and online content, as well as the creation of an anti-digital discrimination coalition to prevent cyberbullying. Later this fall, MTV will release a “digital bill of rights” that thousands of teens have contributed to, reflecting upon what teens feel they are entitled to when talking on the cell phones and online.

Will you be tuning into DISconnected tomorrow night? Do you know someone who’s a little too tech obsessed? Blog about it, babes.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!
I'm getting my haircut today (please answer quickly!!!) and was wondering how I should get it done. It needs to be long enough to go into a bun (I take dance lessons) and right now it is about four and a half inches past my shoulders. Thx!

Hey chica, if you still want a bun just tell your hairdresser that. You can still have her cut it in a cute style (try layers!). A bob cut is nice, with or without bangs. Just inform her that you don't want it to be too short.

I have a Facebook and a Twitter but I never really go on.. and I just use Youtube to listen to music. I really only use my cell to call people once in awhile and I just have a basic iPod. I've always thought technology is just a nuisance. Smile

MODMODMOD!!!
Hey! I'm signed up for cheer-leading with my friend, and the Cheerleading Clinic is Wednesday, and the Actual Tryouts are Thursday. My friend and I don't have any cheer or dance experience. I really wanna make the team though, and so does she. We were contemplating trying out together, but we haven't come to a decision. I was wondering, If we try-out together, would it be easier for us, or should I just go alone. I mean, I don't wanna seem like a bad friend. Oh, and by the way, we're in Middle School. Please Help!!!

Hey girlie,

You could totally try out together to give each other support! It just depends on if you really want to dedicate lots of time to the team if/when you make it. It's a personal choice so, if you want to do it, do it! And if she decides she also wants to do it, then that's great. But don't decide to try out because she's trying out (or vice versa). Do what you feel is best Smile Just make sure you're totally prepared and that you RELAX before the tryouts if you do decide to go through with it. You'll be fine!
