You probably know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but today also marks another awareness day that we can all relate to: National Food Day. Our country’s tendency to be unhealthy eaters has been a topic for quite a long time, so today’s goal is to spread awareness of healthy eating habits and other food issues.
 
Schools and other organizations are running thousands of food-related events today concentrated on eating well, buying local foods and food deserts (rural areas where fresh foods are hard to come by). Social media has even spread word of a so-called “carrotmob,” where people get together to purchase local fresh produce from struggling markets.
   
Even if you’re not participating in a National Food Day event, take some time to figure out how you eat. If you’ve been hitting up the drive-thru or eating frozen meals lately, think about having mom or dad cook more meals with fresh products. Or better yet, plan and cook meals together. Eating right starts at home, so encourage everyone in your family to start eating healthy.
 
What do you think about all this, girls? Some schools are adding a week of food classes for their students in honor of National Food Day. Would you like to see something similar in your schools, or do you think it’s unnecessary? And most of all, how do you make sure to eat healthy?

I've been trying to eat healthy and exercise more for a while now and I want my mom to join me. She's overweight and I want her to live a long happy life. I've asked her to go on walks with me and to eat healthier or at least buy healthier foods but she won't. I understand the walking thing because she has a bad back and ankle but her eating better would totally motivate and help me with my health. How can I get her in healthier habits?




Hey girl, by doing what you are doing: by offering her invitations and encouraging her the best you can. Remember, you can't make her. But you can set a good example and be a role model to her. Make special healthy meals for her and you to share. Explain why it means so much she eat healthy too and why it helps you. Don't give up on her; she'll appreciate your faith more than you know.

there are so many people at school i want to be friends with. like maybe ive had a couple convos with them, but were not like good friends or anything. i think itd be awkward just to go up and be like "Hey," to them at school or something. what can i do to become friends with them like ive been wanting to?

Hey girl, why not see if you can work on a class assignment with them or if they want to do a study group for an upcoming test? Make opportunities to hang out with them.
