Generation overbabied? What our (fab!) interns have taught us

Check these out, too...

  • Wishlist musts inspired by a year of GL covers
  • My mission: Conquer a new challenge every year
  • LOL! Funny gifts for the cat obsessed
  • Why being single really is the best thing ever
  • 3 ways to up your flirt game
One of the things I am most proud of is how many interns we have had at GL. We’ve easily employed around 1,000 girls, from the middle-schoolers who shadow us for a day to the high school seniors who spend an entire semester with us (yes, there are tears when they leave—and not just because suddenly there’s no one bringing us brownies and lattes).

While I would love to offer insightful personal anecdotes for each intern, I can’t. I’m happy if I can just remember their names. (I used to rag on my dad for calling me the name of one of my five brothers and sisters, but I get it now. That said, I still reserve the right to shamelessly guilt him for once calling me the dog’s name.)

There is one intern who sticks out in my mind, though. At the start, Sarah was most notable to me because she had the most amazingly bouncy, perfect hair I’d ever seen on anyone outside of Blake Lively (who, I am here to tell you first-hand, has the flaxen locks of a goddess). She also dressed cutely, was really nice and always did her best, though I couldn’t help but notice she was never really one of those looking to make her mark. She was, as they say, just happy to be here.

So me being me and thinking everyone wants to move up the ladder, I chose Sarah over one of the eager brownie-bearing beavers for a project. It went OK up to the part where we had to send it out and I asked Sarah to grab a shipping box.

Her: “I don’t know how to do that.” I thought she meant she didn’t know where to find boxes, so I pointed to where we store the office supplies. Her: “No, I mean I don’t know how to do that.” Me: “Do what? Pop together a box?” Her: “Yeah, I don’t know how to do that.” Me: “You push it up. You tape it. That’s it.” Her: “Yeah, no, my mom does stuff like that for me.”

While part of me wanted to patiently show her how to make a box, really I just wanted to blurt out, “Dude, for real?!” In the end, I just sort of sat and blinked. Standing there before me was a high school senior who didn’t know how to make a box because her mom didn’t think she’d ever need a box.

Sadly, there are a ton of Sarahs out there. I know this because she was hardly the last one through my doors with little to zero real-world experience. While everyone has to do something for the first time at some point (how do you learn otherwise?), I’ve never seen as many girls get overbabied by their parents as I do now. The results of these good intentions? Girls leave the nest knowing how to do exactly zip.

And I’m not talking about it-will-come-in-handy-four-times-in-your-life stuff like how to use jumper cables without blowing up the car. I am talking about things like laundry. Or cooking. Or, in the case of one of my interns, how to mail something.

I get it—it’s nice to have your mom do the boring or tough things in life for you. But learning how to take care of yourself gives you a sense of confidence that the world isn’t such a scary place. That you can handle the little (and big) challenges life will inevitably throw your way.

Remember: One day you’ll move out of your parents’ house and strike out on your own. And for that, you’ll need a box.

So, I have my friends birthday party and my dad wants me to go to a hockey game. They are both on the same day. My dad is always out of town for work and my friend lives right next door. What do you think I should do?

Hey babe,

I think you should go to the hockey game - if you don't see your dad as often as you like, your friend will understand your predicament. Besides, you can't really trade in hockey tickets, while you can celebrate your friend's birthday another time. Have fun!

I don't know what to say; I don't know how girls who are over-babied are going to survive later in life.

This article is so true. Luckily for me, I come from a hard working family, and even though I'm the baby of the bunch, which means I get spoiled sometimes, I do my own laundry, room, mail, and I use my own money. And I'm thirteen. It's extremely sad that our generation is getting more reliant on parents and technology to do their own simple tasks for them. I am scared for my future because my generation's intelligence. This article is probably my second favorite one by Karen. My first one is the one about jobs and Bridget Mendler was the cover.

Love the article! It really makes me think about how sheltered our lives are.Kids are babied a lot,and im not talking about when their little.I'm not sure how some people i know will survive in the real world.Fortunately,I've been able to have some great experiences that im thankful for and i think everyone should experience something that can teach them something they'll ACTUALLY use!

I've been waiting forever for an article like this. It's so true. Now-a-days, everybody wins, and everybody has to be nice. I remember I was at my friends pool this summer, and her little sister had friends over also, and we wanted to play Shark, I think, and they wanted to play it a really complicated and special way so everybody would win and it would all be fair. I wanted to yell at them; "Life isn't fair!" because it isn't. Our generation is going to turn into a bunch of babies, were everybody get's paid the same thing, everybody has the same stuff, so everything is fair. Life is about clawing your way to the top and staying there. In life, there are winner and there are losers, and if little kids don't figure that out, I don't want to know how this world will turn out.

@Chandra Pop
I totally agree. I'm one of the smartest people in my class, and I sit next to a girl named Kate (not her real name). We spent 20 minutes learning about stanzas in poems, and then did a work sheet on them. 2 minutes into it, Kate turned to me and asked, "So, what's a stanza?". I could have slapped her!

This is why kids need to step up and learn how to do things on their own. So many times in school teachers spoon feed us the work since kids can't make the critical thinking leap and infer how things are supposed to work. Help is fine, but being able to figure out problems and find creative solutions separates the successful from the slackers. Thank you for pointing this out, GL.

You opened my eyes, I am now thinking about all the stuff I really have never thought about having to do. I do know how to make a box but there are plenty of other things that are very important I have never even considered. I'm going to start trying to step out of my sheltered shell and learn how handle life, little by little, while someone is still there to help me figure it out.

Hey i like thins guy and we are texting but i need to know some quick and cute flirting tips to let him know i like him as a friend and more... we like talking about music and school and what we are currently doing (right now.. playing rock band/watching tv)
BHE

Hey girlie,

It's tough to give specific tips because I don't know what kinds of convos you have (like what your personalities are like and stuff), but a great way to incorporate flirting is to compliment him! Tell him he's good at something or that you like a certain aspect of his personality. You could tease him about something funny that happened recently, be a little flirty-mysterious if he asks you a question, and joke around. It's easier to do in person...if you try that first, then maybe you can translate it to text!
