Adding insult to humiliation

 
 
My mom and my crush's mom are like BFFs, so our families hang out a lot. The other night our families had dinner together. Afterward my crush and I went to hang out in the family room while our moms were chatting in the dinning room. I should mention the rooms are connected. Well, I guess they forgot that, because they essentially started planning our wedding. "I think it's great what they have," his mom said. "Oh, I know, Michelle has the biggest crush on him," my mom chimed in. My crush and I awkwardly sat there in agony. I coughed to get their attention, hoping they would stop. No such luck. "Yeah, it reminds me of my husband and I when we first met," his mom continued. OMG! I couldn't bear anymore and said, "Uh, you do realize we're sitting here and we can hear you, right?" Then my crush said, "Yeah, sorry to disappoint you guys, but I don't think that'll ever happen." Ouch! Like I really needed that!

I used to be really confident around girls and guys, but then a few months ago when I got my period, I feel really nervous and skittish around guys! I feel like one will try and you know what to me! Even my teacher! EVEN on anxiety meds. I have best-guy friends but most of the time I feel to uncomfortable around them. I have also noticed how much I've grown. I feel even more nervous in public. Plus I don't even know any self defense. I never dreamed having my period would result in this! Help me pls!

Aw, totally understand this one! You're growing up, so you have a whole new body to feel comfortable with - and that's easier said than done! There are two good ways to overcome this anxiety: 1) The first is to talk to someone about it. Whether it's your school counselor, a clergy person, a therapist, a trusted teacher, or whoever. Get your feelings and worries out, no matter how crazy you think they sound. They can help you calm down! 2) Do things that make you feel empowered. Whether that's taking a self-defense class, creating something artistic, joining a debate team, setting and achieving goals, or writing down all your strengths in a book, do what will help you bust your insecurities. And remember all the amazing qualities about your guy friends: they're respectful, they're serious about school, they're good at sports, they're nice to their mom. Try to realize how they are good people and that they're the ones you can trust! <3 You can't protect yourself against some things in this crazy world, but you can definitely find the things that make you feel safe - and hang onto them <3

Alright, so I kinda like this guy in my english class, but sometimes I feel like I creep him out a little. I promise, I'm a totally average person! How can I keep from getting that reaction from him?




Hey babe,

No worries! Just try not to come on too strong. If you feel like you're "creeping him out," try to wait til he starts the convo with you instead of you starting it first. Try not to look at him too much for the next hour or so, or try not to seem like you know too much about him. Let him tell you things, rather than assuming/using what you've learned from gossip. It's all a balancing act, so don't feel bad about yourself if you do feel creepy once in a while. Just tone it down, then start flirting again once time has passed, and you'll be ok ;)
