My boyfriend and I have an 11-year age difference. Everyone says I should break up with him, but I like him a lot. I don't know what to do. Help!!


Whoa! An 11-year difference? One or two years is fine for someone your age, but a guy that old dating someone your age is eyebrow-raising at best and law-breaking at worst. Depending on the state, it's illegal for a person 18 years or older to be involved with a person younger than 18.

Legal issues aside, it also raises another question: Why isn't he dating a girl his own age? That seems pretty strange in my opinion. Think about it, girlie, when you get to be his age, would you ever consider being with somebody 11 years younger if you didn't have some creepy ulterior motive in mind?

Not only is it odd and illegal, but a lot of things change the situation when a person is that much older than you. He will undoubtedly expect a lot of you at some point, perhaps more than you're ready to give. Though he may not pressure you for it, he very well might.

Your friends are speaking the truth, babe. There are many things about this that ring "uh-oh" bells. Sometimes you have to go against your feelings to do what you know is right.

Three years can be a lot when you're young, but it really depends on the situation! If your parents are okay with it, there's no harm in seeing what it's like to go on a date with him, but if he's pressuring you into anything you're not ready for, steer clear and go for someone your own age!

Try throwing in some subtle flirting moves to see how he reacts! Compliment him on something. Tease him about something, like playfully making fun of him. Ask him to hang out in a group setting so you can get to know each other outside of school. Talk online or text, instead of only talking in school. Basically, take your friendship to the next level! If he's into it and seems to flirt back, that's a great sign Smile

It's gonna feel awkward for a while no matter what you do, but if you act like you don't care, then your crush will think you don't feel uncomfortable. Until you get over him for good, the best thing to do is fake that you're over it.

It depends! 14 to 17 could feel huge because you're enjoying high school and he's thinking about college. But, if you have enough in common and care enough to work hard at the relationship, it could be totally no big deal. Just make sure you're respecting yourself and never push yourself beyond what you're ready for. Sometimes 17 year olds could be on a different page with relationship stuff, so just take things slow and be honest about your feelings. Give it a try - it could work! And if not, at least you know that you were in two different places and the timing wasn't right. There's nothing wrong with that <3

It's never nice to make fun of someone, so the first step would be to apologize and explain that the reason you did that is because you were hurt about his response to your gift. You could ask why he responded that way and let him know he hurt your feelings, without being aggressive. If you can both explain your side of the story, you can work it out!

ok so there is a guy who is 18 and i'm turning 14 on January 1st. We have alot in common but he's a senior and I'm an eigth grader. I really like him but idk what to do cuz he's 4 years older than me! My mom said we would be cute together but that he's way too old for me. She doesn't know I like him. Also I was talking to him on facebook one day and I told him about a school trip I was going on and like a month later I finally saw him in person and he asked me how my trip went. This is kinda a big age difference, so it's super tough to get to "dating" status...but it doesn't hurt to try! Remember that you're going to have lots of different interests and concerns (he's looking at college, for example), but that you can still get a long and find things in common. You're already talking to him a little bit, so that's a start! Just keep it up and chat as much as you can without coming on too strong. Ask him for homework help, say hey whenever you see him at school functions, say what's up when he's at his locker, etc. Again, it's tough to get "in" with him without having mutual friends or a reason to hang out, but you gotta give it a try and see what happens over time!

Hey girly, I think you should talk to your BFF. If she's okay with you guys dating, then go for it, if not then I wouldn't go behind her back. Please help! I'm so confused. I am sorta starting to like this guy who I already know likes me. He's super sweet and I really am liking him more and more. The problem is he's 4 years older and even though a lot of people say it's a bad idea, my friends think it's a good idea since he's different. Plus my mom says it's fine if we go on group dates, but my dad doesn't seem to like the idea very much.

I agree with the others, if you are adults it doesnt matter what the age gap is but 11 years is too much if you arent. Thats not to say we dont have crushes and cant love older guys but they are into doing their thing and we are into ours. And even if its illegal only if you are doing sexual things with each other, I would think by his age guys would need to have that to be in a relationship.

Just try to find a guy closer to your age, yes they are not as mature and may not be ready for things like we may be but at least our parents can accept them.

It's a tough spot...I myself am dating someone who is 4 years older than me, and I absolutely adore him. And I know for a fact that he loves me, too. He doesn't expect anything of me, he is respectful, and he never pressures me. However, that's 4 years, as opposed to 11 years. I'm not saying this guy's bad. He could be just as amazing as my guy, for all I know. Love is love, and there shouldn't be an age limit set on it. That being said, men are also men. Most want women at the same maturity level as themselves. If he is 11 years older than you, then that means that when you were 5, he was 16. When you were 10, he was 21 and could legally drink. He'll be almost 30 by the time you graduate. It's a big stretch. Personally, I would suggest backing off this dude until you're at least 18. If your love is meant to be, it will find a way to reconnect you two, and until then, try to find someone who maybe doesn't have back pains yet. ;)

The next time you and your BF are together, try saying something like, "Hey - I don't wanna sound crazy, but have you and _(her name)_ been texting? Obviously you should be friends with whoever you want because I love that you're so independent, but she really doesn't like me...and I really like you, so I just kinda feel weird about it because she's your ex. I know it sounds totally silly! But I just wanted to be honest." Be open about your feelings and let him reassure you that everything is great between you two. But if she does manage to get her way and you break up, remember... she can't single-handedly make you guys break up. He has to make that decision - so if she does convince him, he might not be the trustworthy, loyal BF you thought <3 And it's better to know that earlier rather than later!

Hey girl,

This varies depending on the person (and the relationship you have with your BF) - for some people, it's dating someone else, for others it's kissing someone else, for others it's even flirting with someone else. Personally, if my BF kissed/"went to the next level" with another girl, that would be cheating for me. But I wouldn't call it cheating if he had a flirty convo with another girl - unless it was a hot-and-heavy convo, that is. It's kind of a blurry line - you have to figure out what it means to you and what you would consider "off limits."

If you don't know him, you really shouldn't be giving away your number/talking to him. You have NO way to make sure he's who he says he is - it's dangerous and not really smart. Personally, I would trust your gut here and stick to the "my phone got taken away" story. He might seem sweet, but it's just not worth it! There are lots of guys you can actually meet in person and crush on instead Smile

It may not be illegal to just date(like holding hands and hanging out),but it is illegal to not be abstinent with him,(which you shouldnt be doing at all until ur married or at least can drink legally). my friend had an issue like this, although it was 15 and 18 which isn't horrible. an 11 year difference would be like a 14 and a 25. that's a really big age difference (though now that i think of it, my other friend was 13 and 22). however, if you really like him, and he really likes you, then you can wait until your 18, which is perfectly legal and not eyebrow raising at all, since almomst half of married couples are more than six years in difference.. defffff talk with your parents about this one!!!

Okay i know that this is like one question out of what.. A million? So i wont get my hopes up that i get an answer like in the next ten seconds. I have this HUGE pimple that hurts like crazy on my chin. And i look like a volcano through up all over my face. This is my first major break out. And i know its caused by stress. I have had a crazy week. I am kinda gonna be around this family that i really need to impress and i need advice on how to make that stupid pimple.. well.. DISAPPEAR. hey girl! pimples can be the worst around the holidays. there is no direct way to get rid of them though in a matter of minutes. cover up is the best way to hide it though for a short period of time. check out our "your bod" page for some more help.

I think that at this age (teenage I'm guessing) a one or two year difference is a lot because you mature A LOT at this age and the difference between say, a Freshmen and a Senior in high school is huge. It may not matter that he is 11 years older later in life and as an adult, but right now it is a very large emotional, physical, and maturity gap... Plus it's illegal!

Would you want to date someone 11 years younger than you? You should really tell you parents. If you break up with him, he could harm you. There's this girl in my class that's really nice, but she get's distracted EASILY. She get's more distracted than ME! And that's saying something! And I know she's smart, because she's in my honors classes. But sometimes, well, she kind of makes her self look... whats the word... is it ditzy? But anyways, she's really cool, but she annoys me SO MUCH!! And when we have to do projects together, she gets distracted and I spend half of the time trying to get her back on track! How do I let her know she needs to get on track?

MODMODMODMODMODMODMOD!!! This guy and I used to like each other and texted all the time over the summer. He turned out to be a jerk and liar who could only talk to me in texts and not in front of his friends. He still sits with me on the bus on the way to school because I don't try to hold grudges and we have been acquaintances this year. He made a comment this morning about how he hasn't texted me in a while and I was awkward and just like "yeah I've been busy anyway" Then when I got home, he texted me and said "long time no text" and I didn't answer because I'm not going back to the only talk when we text realtionship. I don't respect someone who can't talk to me in person and lies about text messages they send. He has texted me 6 times tonight and I haven't answered one message and I'm not going to. I don't care if he all of a sudden wants me back. I have too much self respect for that! Could you give me some advice? ThanksSmile!!!

MOD MOD MOD! Basically yeah. I mean her personality seems so much better than mine! I try so hard and i try hard not to try hard but its so hard!! (lol if you understand what i just said!) She seems to make friends easily when she wants to when i can't! ANd other things too.

 

You got to get some confidence girly. It seems like you always compare yourself to her, which you shouldn't. There are qualities that are unique and cool about you that she doesn't have. You need to find those things about yourself. Who says her personality is better than yours? Everyone has different personalities, could you imagine if we all had the same one? It would be so boring. The same way those certain people are attracted to her, other people will be attracted to you. Ohmigosh girl! It seems like you like him a lot, but an 11 year age difference is too much. Don't you ever wonder why he is dating a girl so much younger than he is? Sorry, but the only legitimate reason a guy dates a way younger girl is for "that". I'm guessing you're like 13 or 14, and that makes him 24 or 25. That's just creepy! MOD MOD MOD I'm a freshman and in the band... I'm on the drum line so were like a big family.... My friend and I are the only freshman on the line... So everyone else is older than us... I've been noticing a senior lately and he seems to catch my eye every now and then and just stares at me as a joke, so we always laugh at the faces he makes at me... It seems like he's glancing at me constantly, and when he makes a joke, he looks at me real quick to see if I laugh... When he says something, like a side comment, he always says it to me... Hey missy, I know you like him, but it can be hard to change a player's ways. If he's really into talking to all these different girls, he may not want to stop just for you. And that doesn't mean there's something wrong with you, it just means he likes getting all this attention from all those different girls. You should find someone else to like. I really want to lose some weight before we go, and get a flatter stomach and toned thighs. How do I do it? Will eating less (still eating, just not overeating) and eating healthier foods help? I think I need to lose the weight and then tone up but I'm just worried with Thanksgiving tomorrow that I'll just gain it all back! Or gain more!
