Why is my crush giving me the homecoming runaround?

My BFF “let it slip” that I’m crushing on this guy. He told my friend he might ask me to the fall formal if he didn’t go with this other girl who, he claims, begged him to take her. Turns out, he didn’t go to the dance at all. Am I getting a cold shoulder?

Bill: You could be getting the cold dancer. Most guys don’t like to dance. Look on the bright side—he didn’t go with the other girl. Could be he didn’t want to hurt her feelings. That would make him a nice guy instead of a bad dancer. Now that the pressure of the dance is over, let him know you’re still crushing. He might warm up.

Dave: Bill’s right on. It’s got nothing to do with wanting to go with which girl and everything to do with wanting to skip the event. “Dance” is a concise term for “standing in a roomful of people, feeling completely goofy.” Invite him to a football game, and see what happens.
