Mountain Dew: A toxic don't?

 
Do you do the Dew? You might wanna file that under “health don’ts”, dearie, ‘cause the word on the street is that the soda has a  surprising ingredient (um, other than mass quantities of caffeine, of course): brominated vegetable oil, otherwise known as BVO, according to Environmental Health News.  
 

In addition to its use in 10-percent of popular sodas in the U.S., the chemical is also used by manufacturers as a flame retardant in furniture cushions. Yum, right? BVO is banned in Europe and Japan, but for some unknown reason, the American FDA thinks this chemical is totally safe for consumption.

 

However, a recent study suggests that ingestion of BVO can cause skin lesions, memory loss, severe stomach problems and nerve disorders. And scientists don’t think it’s too far-fetched to assert that many folks, notable Dew-guzzling gamers, are getting toxic levels of BVO daily.

 

Though groups are lobbying the FDA to reconsider its stance on BVO, legislation prohibiting its use in beverages has not been passed. Lesson of the day: Before you pick up the can of Fanta, Sunkist or Fresca (or a bottle of Gatorade or Powerade…), check the nutrition label for brominated vegetable oil.

I never drink soda ok that's not really true I ONLY drink it if I'm at a restaurant which is usually only once a month or once a week I only have one glass and that's it

well that's nice...... we bought a 36 pack of this for my brothers 18th birthday.... I just told my mom this isn't allowed in the house anymore and she agrees with me....noww I just have to tell my bro it's not allowed...and he loves mountain dew.. oh well :/

I hate seeing things like this! It really worries me! My boyfriend frequently (more like only!) drinks Mountain Dew. In fact, he is part of a group in my school called the Mountain Dew Boys. There is no way that he will stop drinking it..

I NEVER drink soda, unless my stomach is upset, then I'll drink a little sprite...but other than that, i hate soda.

Most soda is toxic and takes weeks to flush out of your system. Also water in bottles are just as toxic. I'm not suprised....

While some sodas may have a form of alcohol in them, it's not the same thing you'll find in "alcoholic drinks" -- they don't card you for buying soda, after all! But sodas do have tons of bad ingredients, so if your aunt's a scientist, her advice is just one of many good reasons to stay away from soda!

hey um well my dad drinks 2 cans of Mountain Dew a day. sometimes more. he's done it all of my life...its diet and caffeine free but does it still have this chemical in it?? should i talk to him about it...i don't want him to die from it or anything.

i have been cutting back on my sodas i only have one every two weeks at the most but lately it has been like one drink of soda almost a month. But trust me i barely drink mountain dew even if it is a really delicious drink.
