Homeless science whiz Samantha Garvey scores $50,000 scholarship

 
You’re balancing books, boys and b-ball practice and you think you’ve got it tough? Wait ‘til you hear 18-year-old Samantha Garvey’s story. The Brentwood, N.Y., bio whiz found out a few weeks ago that she’s a semi-finalist for one of the most prestigious science contests in the world, sponsored by Intel. There are 300 semifinalists, but what makes Samantha’s story stand out is that she made it to the next round…and right now, she and her family are homeless.

 

On New Year’s Eve, Samantha’s family moved into a Long Island homeless shelter because her family couldn’t keep up with rent following her mother’s car accident and the health care bills she incurred.

 

When the family’s plight came to light last week, Samantha garnered quite a bit of media attention. Her county is getting ready to move the family into subsidized housing. Her congressman has invited her to attend the State of the Union Address this coming Tuesday. And she received an invitation to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she was awarded a whopping $50,000 scholarship on behalf of AT&T.

 

The aspiring marine biologist dreams of attending Brown or Yale, but before she gets letters from the Ivy League, she’s gonna hear from Intel; Samantha will discover if the project she’s been working on for two years has made her one of 40 finalists for the $100,000 grand prize.

Ok, so this guy (s) really liked me. Like, REEEEEAAAAAAAALLLLLLY liked me, since the start of the year. In march he got the courage to ask me out (hes super shy and we hardly ever talk btw)... But through another guy. I said I'd think about it, but then this huuuuge drama blew up in our faces with rumors flying everywhere. Anyway, I friendzoned him! I wasn't planning on dating this year and the drama made it difficult and we hardly ever talk and it I would just be more awkward and he's going to a different school next year. But the thing is that I feel really guilty and I can tell he's Still trying to win my heart, but we literally can't talk without it being awkward! And weve had about 2 20 word encounters since he asked me out!!! I almost changed my mind and told him I would go out with him, but now I don't know what to do?????? Plz help!!!

 

Hey girl!

Sounds like he might just be too shy to talk or he just likes listening to you, so I'd say try to be yourself and do all the talking and have fun. He might pitch in when you talk about your experiences and what you feel and think. You could also find out what all he likes to do, such as watching funny shows or cooking, and suggest doing that together – it could end up being really fun. Smile

Hey girlie,

It sounds like a friendly text, but try taking it one step at a time. Get ready and approach it like he asked you as a friend. Then, see how he acts around you. If he's all buddy-buddy and it's actually about skiing, then he probably asked you as a friend. If he talks to you a lot, flirts, etc., then it could be more. You gotta pay attention to his behavior and the hints he's giving ya!

Please help! I told one of my friends about who I liked, and she told me who she liked. And its the same guy. Everyone says that I look better with him than her. My friend asked me if I would ask him if he likes her. I said yes. When I asked him, he said that he did like her. Being a good friend, I told him to as her out and stuff. She asked me to be her "wing-girl" and he also asked me to be his "wing-girl" too. So basically, I'm the one who set up this relationship. I like him less now because he likes my friend, not me. But I am a little jealous to see him with her. She tried to return the favor by getting my crush's twin bro to ask me out. I don't like him that way though. And it seems like many of my relationships have ended because I didn't really like like the person, I just went along with whatever my friend said. How can I deal with this? What should I do? How can I get over my crush?

Hey girlie,

It's totally hard to see a crush dating someone else...even worse if it's a friend! But try to be happy for them and remember that you sacrificed this one to keep your chica happy. You did a really sweet thing for her and I bet she really appreciates it Smile The best thing to do is remind yourself you've still got "game," basically - get back out there and find another crush! You can't force yourself to like a guy, but you can take control of your own love life and meet guys who have similar interests/things in common with you. Meet new people by joining a new club, getting a part time job, taking a night class, trying a new sport, or meeting friends-of-friends. You just gotta stick with it and keep an open mind! Be patient... you'll find someone you "click" with and you'll be in the clear Smile
