6 secrets to staying safe in the sunshine


 
It’s easy to forget about sun safety when you’re worried about frostbite and frozen hair at the bus stop. Just ‘cause you’re not thinking shorts and bikinis, though, doesn’t mean you can forget about Mr. Sun. We’ve got six ways to protect your skin while you’re livin’ it up in the great outdoors.


Grab a topper. Not only will a hat keep you warm, but it’ll also prevent the sun from burning your scalp. Choose a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, neck and ears, too.


Slap on a pair of sunnies. An oversized pair of glasses (with trendy tortoiseshell rims, natch) are a hip way to protect your eyes and the delicate skin that surrounds them. Look for a pair that blocks UV rays completely.


Snag a moisturizer with SPF. If you’re moisturizing anyway, why not pick up a bottle that’s packed with an added bonus? Easy peasy.


Get smart with your smacker. Tons of companies now make lip balms with SPF, too. The next time your browsing at the drugstore, pick up a fresh balm and toss it in your bag.


Avoid high noon (and early afternoon). The sun is at its strongest from noon to three o’clock, so if you can, schedule activities in the morning or late afternoon.


Make sunscreen part of your daily routine. If you know you’re going to be outside for a long period of time, put some sunscreen on the visible parts of your body while you’re getting ready. All it takes is a couple of minutes, tops, and it could prevent you from contracting skin cancer in the future. That’s worth it, in our book.
