Quick Q of the week: My fitness goal for this year is to get a flat stomach. How much cardio do you recommend I do to get rid of the belly fat?

Wellness expert and CEO of girlsgonesporty.com Laura Williams says, “Teens should aim for 60 minutes of activity a day, but try to make at least 30 minutes of that cardio - dancing, walking, jogging, etc. Then, make sure you're eating healthy foods, like fruits and veggies.”

Make it happen! Need a li’l inspiration? “A great way to stick to healthy habits is to schedule them into your weekly planner every single week, then make sure you're treating them like any other appointment,” Laura says. “One thing I did when I was in high school was post sticky notes around my room with motivational sayings. They were always front-and-center so I couldn't ignore them and I was more likely to follow through.”

MOD.
I go to the fitness center behind my house to work out, and i can do t for free because my dad works for the company that owns it. The prob is, my mom only lets me go there if my dad is with me-and he doesn't go that much. It's annoying, 'cause I'm nearly fourteen and I go when no one else is there except for maybe someone I know. She thinks I'm going to get kidnapped-no joke-even though an old lady janitor is there all the time, there are cameras, less than 800 people live in this town, hardly anyone goes there, and I'm a LOT stronger than I look-ask my friends.
Why does she always treat me like a baby and not give me any freedom?!

Hey girlie,

She treats you that way because you ARE her baby. Even though you're not a little kid anymore, she's worried about you and wants to make sure you stay safe. Who could blame her? But that doesn't change the fact that you ARE growing up, so try talking to her and seeing if you can compromise. Admit that you know you're only 13 now, but ask her - is there an age when she would feel comfy letting you go alone? Is there a way you could make a schedule with mom/dad so they can come with you more times each week? In a calm and mature way, express how much you want to use the gym and get healthy - I'm sure mom will appreciate your passion for it and will try to help Smile

what are some good indoor workouts where i live its always either really hot or rainy also something simple that can be done to music that doesnt need any special equipment (like weights or a treadmill) i know its a lot to ask because i have no equipment and no outdoor oppurtunities and i live in a small one floor house so yeah and i dont have access to a gym either please help i really want to lose like 20 pounds to up my self confidence and wear a bikini this year youve helped me with other things b4
thanks

Hey Girly!

Why not try a workout video? Head to a local book or video store and ask if they have any workout videos, like cardio or yoga. They both require little equipment (only a mat for yoga, which you could substitute with a towel) and give you great results. Losing twenty pounds is a LOT. Don't go into your workout only wanting to lose weight-it won't keep you motivated for long enough. You have to have fun and enjoy what you're doing. Don't forget a healthy diet, too.

First, I ask a lot of questions, I'm really sorry!
Second, I always want to work out, but I'm never motivated to do that! I'll promise myself I'll do about 5-10mins everyday before school, but I never have time! (before or after school) I want to get a nice bod for bikini season, but I just can't.
Third, I walk to and from school everyday. It's about 15-20mins one way, so is that enough excersise?

Hey girl! Walking to school is great but it's definitely not enough exercise for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you really want to motivate yourself to get moving, promise yourself a reward for every week that you workout for 5 days. Rewards systems are always a great way to motivate yourself.

MOD MOD!
I was wondering if DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) is a good workout routine. I dance the equivalent of 3 miles a day, and burn 90 kilocalories per day. Also, lately, I have not been wearing a bra for my workouts (cause I'm silly about wearing them) and I've been getting stretchmarks on my breasts. I have a small, b cup, so should I start wearing the bra, and is the dancing without one the cause if the stretchmarks? Thanks!

Hey girlie,

No worries - working out without a bra is not a cause of stretch marks. Those stretch marks are signs that your bod is growing (aka your boobs) and your skin is expanding to keep up with it. They'll fade with time and are totally normal Smile As for DDR, it can be a great way to get moving! It's not quite a "workout routine" because you're mostly moving your legs and each song isn't very long, but if you do it for 30-60 minutes each day, it's a great way to get a little cardio. Try to mix it up by doing that one day, then jogging/kickboxing/biking the next day, then doing strength training or pilates the next day...you get the idea. It can be a  great way to keep your workouts interesting, but I'd definitely try to make sure you're doing SOMETHING else besides that Smile

Hi!Okay, so last year i was very active. I did three sports and was also in track and field. This year, i am not doing any sports but still manage to work out a few times a week. I would love to go jogging but i do not like running by myself... any suggestions? Also, i have been getting a lot of stretch marks around my thighs and upper legs and i have no idea ho to get rid of them! Please help!!

Hey girlie,

Get a "running buddy" to keep the workout feeling fresh! Ask a friend, a former track and field teammate, a family member, or even bring the fam dog along for the run. You could also run at your school's track, which is a little less awkward if you're running alone. As for stretch marks, read this article for details Smile

Hey, okay so I've been looking at a lot of workouts and I see crunches can play a big role in getting a flat tummy. So if I do a lot of crunches everyday will that help me get a flat stomach? How do you actually do crunches? because I can't seem to understand the description that you guys gave. Are there any pictures or something?
Thank you and Happy Holidays! Laughing

Hey girl! Crunches are great for a flat stomach (try going to this page for some "how-to" tips), but your daily diet can play a big role in it, too. Eat whole foods, like fruits and veggies, whole grains (oatmeal, whole wheat bread), lean protein (eggs, chicken, turkey), and good-for-you fats (almonds, natural peanut butter, avocados). Try to cut out as much sodium as possible to reduce bloat--skip the chips! Everyone has abs, you just need to get rid of the layer of fat that is covering them. Try running intervals (sprint for 30 seconds, then jog for 2 minutes, and repeat until you have completed 30 minutes) to get your heart pumping and to burn more calories. Don't forget to eat enough food to properly fuel your body and drink lots of water to stay hydrated!

Hey Natalie,

Try looking for bathing suits in the TANKINI style. They have more belly coverage - which might be annoying for you, but will totally make mom smile. These exist at Victoria's Secret, Old Navy, Roxy, Pac Sun, etc. You could also try Gap's SUPER cute one pieces! They make them in different prints and colors, so they look totally youthful Smile

MOD MOD MOD,
3 questions
I am a volleyball player and wanted to know some workouts to keep me in shape since i am playing right now
I exercise and play sports year round but my belly is still fat and it makes me self conscious. what do i do to get rid of the belly fat?
i have always wanted to dance but my town doesn't have any classes. How can i pursue my dream?

Hey girl, I'm a volleyball player too! What keeps me in shape is working out and eating healthy. No more mcdonalds or greasy foods for me. I've even cut soda and coffee completely out of my diet. After your workouts/practices, be sure to get lots of protein (meats, eggs, etc), that helps the muscle repair correctly. Playing organized sports is definitely the best way to stay in shape. I'd just say keep it up! You're doing great!

Hey girl, my favorite core exercise is the plank. You get in push up position but then drop to your fore arms, so that your elbows are shoulder length apart. Make sure your back is low and not arched. I'm not sure if my description is the best, but you can just look up exercise planks.

Ouch ouch ouch ouch, sorry girl!! That totally hurts, I've been there (well, not punched...hit with a frisbee!). Try putting some ice cubes in a plastic bag or wrap them in a washcloth, then apply it to your face. Keep it on for 15 minutes, then give yourself a 5 minute break, then keep it on for 15 minutes again. It'll help keep the swelling down! <3

MOD MOD MOD! On a treadmill I run 20 mins straight on speed 5 and take a 2 1/2 minute break then run 2 1/2 mins on 7 speed. I do that almost everyday. I'm also gonna do track in a week and thats why I'm running so Im not the slowest in the whole middle school. Is that enough?

Hey girlie,

It's not about "being enough" - it's about treating your body well and feeling good. Do you enjoy this workout? Are you pairing it with smart food choices, like replacing junk food for healthier snacks and eating three balanced meals a day? If so, you're doing a great job and totally doing the healthy thing for your bod! And you can always run a bit longer as you get used to this routine - to mix it up and to keep challenging yourself!

MOD MOD MOD!!!
I went to the movies today with some friends from school & my ex that i still like. He is really werid 2 me now & acts totally freaked out when he sees me & like hes scared of me. How can i just get us 2 b friends. My friends talked 2 him & he says he doesnt hate me but hes scared for his life whenever hes around me. I talked to him for the first time in a month(since we broke up) tonight & i really want him back please help!

Hey girl,

You gotta decide what exactly you want here - "getting him back" and "getting us to be friends" are two different things. Honestly, it sounds like you just need to show him you're laid back and friendly right now. He isn't comfy around you and he's scared that you might be angry, mean, awkward... all those bad things that can happen when you're around an ex. Try giving him subtle smiles and waves as you pass him in the hallway, say hey if you see him in the lunchroom, and chat with him through texts/online every so often. Just keep things casual and relaxed. Show him you're totally chill and can be friends without bringing any drama or awkwardness to his life! As time passes, getting him back could be an option. But start with the most important part first, before you even start thinking of that - showing him that a comfortable, calm friendship can happen!
