Should you fib for your friend? The 411

Check these out, too...

  • My bestie isn't acting like a very good friend
  • Help! My BFF can't stand my BF
  • My friend sulks if I do better in school than her. Help!
  • 3 times it's OK to tell your bestie's secret
  • Girl Code: Is it OK to date your BFF's crush?
Telling a fib to help your bud wiggle out of a sticky sitch is totally a no-brainer, right? Wrong! Covering for your bud can be harmless…sometimes. Other times, it can land you both up to your ears in big trouble.

The no-shame game

Your BFF Jen was hangin’ at your locker, chatting about how cute her secret crush Zach looked lacing up his sneaks in gym. You didn’t know mean-girl Tiffany was eavesdropping—’til she told the whole school about your convo! Jen’s beyond embarrassed. In a jam like this, it’s certainly OK to help your girl save face.

Get the word out, loud and proud, and let all the gossip-lovin’ gals know not to believe everything that comes across the rumor wire: “Word is that Tiffany’s repeating stuff she thinks she heard Jen and me talking about. She’s got it wrong. Of course, Jen does think Zach’s a great guy, but I’ll leave it at that.” Then let the grapevine do its stuff. In a jiffy, your direct approach should stop the talk in its tracks, plus let Zach know your girl thinks he’s very groovy (in a way that isn’t goony).

When to keep it real

Sometimes, having your bud’s back isn’t what’s best for her—or you. Say your BFF Eva asks you to tell her mom she’s at your house when she’s really at the movies with Seth, the older guy she’s not allowed to date. Should you go there? Nope. How come? Eva’s mom has the right to set her own parental rules—it’s so not your biz. Plus, if you get caught lying for your girl, Eva gets grounded, and her mom will see her (and you) as way untrustworthy. Your smart move? Show your loyalty by telling Eva, “Sorry, can’t do it—it could get both of us in tons of trouble.”

Listen to your gut

How you feel about a sitch is way crucial. If the little voice inside you is screamin’ that covering for your friend isn’t the right thing to do, it probably isn’t—so definitely don’t do it. You’ve got to be true to you. A real friend won’t ever pressure you into doing something you feel creepy about. If your bud freaks when you lay the “honesty is the best policy” deal on her, stand your ground.

Talkin’ is rockin’

Cut confusion by keeping the info flowin’ at all times. Be upfront about your take on the whole alibi vibe. You may not see eye to eye 100 percent of the time, but if you know each other’s comfort zones, neither of you will get put in an icky sitch. The bottom line is that to be a great BFF, you must show respect—for your bud and for yourself.

MOD MOD MOD I know this is unrelated to this topic, but I was just wondering how on Earth your models have such perfect skin and hair and everything! I can't get perfect skin, Im breaking out like crazy on my forehead and sometimes my hair just wont agree with me! I really hate my face with acne and blackheads and all. How can I get such great skin like these models? Thanks! Luv, Claud

Hey girly! The fact is, these models have professionals touching them up constantly... fixing their hair, their makeup, and everything in between. I can't speak for GL models, but lots of other magazines and advertisements use computer software to airbrush the models, making them look perfect. So, while I'm sure they have flaws, you just can't see them. As for your own skin, my personal favorite face wash is Burt's Bees. Their acne ones are great! Especially the willow bark scrub. That's cleared my skin up a lot. And, instead of concealor, I've been using Garnier's BB Cream. Basically, it's like a tinted moisturizer that does wonders for your skin. You can find both products at your local CVS, Walgreens, Target, etc.

MOD MOD MOD
Today at bball I told one of my bff's that she wasn't good at layups....but she was still better than me. And then she told her mom, and now they're both mad at me...even though I apologized 5 million times. WHat should I do?

Hey girlie,

Give her some time to cool off, then apologize one more time. You might need to swallow your pride and tell her why you said something like this - maybe because you were feeling insecure about your own layups and stop thinking for a second. Whatever it is, giving her some time to be less mad is definitely smart. Then say you're sorry, do your best to make her believe it...and hope she forgives you. She doesn't HAVE to, but this shouldn't be something that breaks your friendship. As long as you aren't too stubborn to apologize and admit you were wrong, I'm sure she'll come around <3

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD! My mom took me shopping today Smile I was at Hollister trying on clothes, I tried on a pair of shorts and they in my eyes are not short at all (http://www.hollisterco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10201&storeId=10251&langId=-1&categoryId=16441&parentCategoryId=16405&topCategoryId=12552&productId=903140&seq=01) and she said they might be too short. We went to Aeropostle “They might be too short” AGAIN! I have some from Abercrombie and Fitch that I know are short and she hasent really said anything or told me not to wear them. Shes like these are cute and they are SUPER lame, I don’t know how to get it across her mind that I like wearing shorter shorts, not to be sluty but I just find them really comfortable! Please help! XOXO

Hey girlie,

I can see how those shorts from Hollister could, in mom's eye, be a little too short. (Let's be honest, they're short-shorts babe!) You're her baby even though you're totally old enough to make decisions for yourself... she's constantly looking out for you, making sure you give off the right impression, and especially that you don't show off too much skin. Try compromising with her! Tell her you won't wear these shorts to inappropriate places, like school, church, your grandparents' house, etc. Tell her you'll save them for spring/summer weekends, the beach, the pool, the movies, around the house, and other places where it's ok to wear shorter shorts. By being mature and willing to compromise, you'll show her you're responsible - and that might make her more willing to work with ya on this one <3

MOD MOD MOD okay, so this is prob a stupid question, but how do you try on shoes in the stores where they only have the display pair out, like journeys and stuff? Do you ask somebody for a certain size or something? oh and i have another question, what stores sell macbeth shoes? i cant order stuff online, and i like to try my shoes on before i get them anyways, thanks MOD!!! Smile

Hey selgomez1997, yeah just ask a salesperson for the shoes in your size. I think Journeys is the only store that sells them girl. Hope this helps! Xoxo

MOD! MOD! So my friend with other friends invited me for bowling. Which I'm cool with except There five of us and two couples. IM THE ONLY ONE SINGLE. Im very insecure but now Im more insecure. What should I do?

Hey *GingerForev*, I know how that can be and if you're not comfortable going don't go. If your friends are the type who are lovey dovey and always all over each other, then you might not have fun since you won't have anyone to cuddle with. But if your friends are chill and don't do that stuff, then don't let the fact that you don't have a boyfriend stop you from having fun. Just think about it girl. Hope this helps! Xoxo
