A Dallas school district recently took their students to a local Cineplex. A day at the movies, you say? What fun! Well, unless you’re a girl who happens to like action-adventure stories.

You see, the Dallas Independent School District took about 5,700 fifth-grade guys to watch Red Tails, a movie about black fighter pilots during World War II. The girls stayed home and caught a different flick, Akeelah and the Bee, newser.com reports.

Now we don’t have anything against Akeelah. In fact, we’re pretty big fans. But what we’re wondering is why couldn’t the girls watch a movie about fighter pilots, too? A representative of the district said that the boys were taken because there wasn’t enough room in the movie theater for all of the students, and officials thought the boys would enjoy the movie more than their female counterparts.

Huh.

Apparently this isn’t the first time this particular school district has divided the sexes for gender-specific events.

Perhaps the most interesting note of all, though, is the subject matter of the film. Red Tails is about the Tuskegee Airmen, the first group of black aviators who flew for the U.S. military. These brave men were not allowed to fight alongside white men, yet they served despite the glaring inequality. Hmm…

What do you think of this sitch, sweeties?

Wow, that really is sexist. They should have at least asked the girls if they wanted to see it. A simple "Hands up if you're a girl and you wanna see this" would suffice in my opinion.

Hey, I like action movies as much as my brother. Maybe more.

Seriously!!?? I think it's not fair that boys get to do fun stuff while us girls have to stay home and do something boring. In the fourteenth amendment of the constitution it states that it gives equal rights.....so why aren't they doing that? I'm so confused about changing laws and stuff??? Just follow what the constitution says...wasn't that what it was made for???

I think that if there was a lawsuit, the school district would lose. It may not seem like a big deal, but that's unequal distribution of taxpayer money (paying for the boys to go to the movies, not paying for the girls) and it's sexist and unfair besides.

report

by Ari on 2/26/2012 9:29:35 AM

That's wrong. Just because we're girls doesn't mean we wouldn't enjoy the movie. I went to see The Hulk 3 because my little brother and cousin went with my mom. I liked it. I liked Pokemon when I was little, Pokemon was thought to be a boys TV show and toys and cards. Garbage Pail Kids? One of the best invention ever. Nail Polish Another best invention ever. I can be girly(which I'm not really.) And still enjoy that movie. Sure, I loved Bratz and Barbies-but I like Pokemon ans stuff like that.

report

by caitwon on 2/26/2012 6:42:57 AM

Don't get me wrong, I love Akeelah and the Bee but I saw Red Tails and it was a REALLY good movie. And the sad part is, I'm a girly-girl in pageants! I'm sure if this school district enrolled me (i know which district it is, im only one over) and I said this out loud, they'd surely arrest me. Thats soo unfair! It's a movie!
Wait a minute, why couldn't they see a UNISEX movie then? Like Mysterious Island? Or the new Arietty movie? I mean DANG thats stupid... And it's funny because I read the last sentence and its true! The movie is about racism, they can't fight in WW2 but girls can't see a movie ABOUT keeping certain people from doing things? Really people? Is this what the world has come to?

Mod mod mod! My friend told my ex bf and ex friend that I wanna be friends again, but that's not true at all I just want to forget him. What do I do?

Hey girl,

Stay true to yourself and what you want! If you really want to move on, try to give yourself space - don't start conversations with them, don't get involved with them. If they talk to you because they heard about this, just try to be friendly and pleasant while also telling them the truth: tell them your friend was trying to help but you're actually really happy right now, so you just want to focus on things and don't want to cause any drama by stirring things up. Apologize and try to move on. It's not easy to distance yourself from people, but try to be friendly first and foremost - you don't want to hurt anyone in this process, even if you have a not-so-good history with them.

That's stupid! I saw that movie recently and I thought it was pretty cool! The school district should've let the girls catch the next showing of the movie or something! I hate when people underestimate girls just because we don't like showing off our muscles. Like the boys so immaturely do!

I saw Red Tails and it is fine for both genders.
It's ridiculous. You should have just split them up evenly. That was NOT necessary.

report

by Dee_Has_Cookiez on 2/25/2012 12:51:54 PM

Sexist thoughts and actions have been around before even your history book starts. Something with that much history, not surprisingly, will change anytime soon. Just because somthing is illegal doesn't mean people don't do it, but just because people do it doesn't mean it's right. What they did was considered as gender discrimination, and discrimination is illegal. I dissagree that all of the administrators believed in this decision, so, there is most likely only one reason why the school successfully achieved the prejudicial decision: Because there is one "Head-Honcho" that nobody wants to stand against, and the "Head-Honcho" doesn't believe in gender equality. So instead of sulking about not being able to watch a movie with the guys, I say find this guy and get him some serious help. The movie will still be there tomorrow, but the Dallas students' ability to call themselves independent won't

It's just so hard to believe nthat in sooo many school they talk about their not allowing rascism, and agism, or even sexism, and all the other isms. Now they are seriously becoming hypocrites. Someone has to do something about this. And Pronto, ASAP! If I was the girls I would have gone on into the movie myself with all my good friends we would've brought in some money so that we could get ourselves snacks. The boys tootally would have been jealous. Then after the movie was over I would talked to my parents about how unfair my school was being too the girls and they WOULD'VE ARGUED with whoever allowed this mishap to happen. After that they would and shouyld correct it. And most of all make a public apology to all the girls who were not allowed to see Red Tails. Then the next BIG movie that came out they'd promise to bring them to, including snacks and transportation. It would also be FREE.

That is completely screwed up! I would've loved to see Red Tails. In fact I would've wanted to see it more than Akeelah and the Bee. I'm sure tons of girls would've wanted to go. Here's an idea: ask all the girls if they'd like to see it. If they say yes, they go, and if necessary make there be more than one trip. If they say no, they watch the other movie. Simple as that.

report

by Kstar101 on 2/22/2012 12:48:23 PM

On one hand, I'm not sure that I would really enjoy Red Tails, but the fact that I wouldn't have been given the fair opportunity to see it is just plain wrong. If it's a school trip, then there must be some educational value, and I think that all students would benefit from that. This post certainly does a good job of pointing out how only letting the boys go see it defies the moral of the film... "These brave men were not allowed to fight alongside white men, yet they served despite the glaring inequality. Hmm…" This is just plain wrong. Some girls may have enjoyed this movie. In today's world, the US brags equality for all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, etc. I think that this school district needs to take a minute to really think about its actions.

report

by cutiecupcakegirl17 on 2/22/2012 12:11:41 PM

Sexist! Don't get me wrong, Akeelah and the Bee is a great movie, but they were making biased assumptions. The boys would enjoy it more... Not necessarily. Plus, the girls get to watch a fictional movie about spelling while the boys enjoy a historical film? Sounds like restricting education for girls to me. NOT okay.

Well, OF COURSE they can't fit a district of fifth graders in a movie theater, especially with a district as large as Dallas ISD. What sexist idiot chose this arrangement?

That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Okay, so the movie's more tilted toward males. That doesn't mean girls wouldn't like it either!!!! STUPID!!!!

That is so sextest! I cant believe they wouyld do that...what kind of school would only let boys see an action movie...i happen to love WWII, esp. the planes

I would be thrilled to see that movie, but oh wait, i cant because i am a girl(prob. what some of the school gurlz were thinking...)

That is so horrible, someone should do something about that...
Grrrrrr, now im really angryFrown

I feel really bad for all of those girls who wanted to see that movie...

Lets let only the boys go to a movie about black fighter pilots and segregation!! Who cares about the girls? Thats the message i'm getting..

That is 100000000000000000000% unfair to all the girls. Not every girl (OK, most of the girls) would have really wanted to see that movie, but i would have dragged my friends butts in there kicking and screaming because it would be a new experience for them, and WWII Black pilots would be amazingly interesting. Those men would have had to go through a lot.

"not enough room in the theaters" then different schools should go on different days!

I am a girl and I am in Marine Corps Officer training at my high school. We took a field trip to see Red Trails when it came out and they didn't discriminate against us. they let every boy and girl in the officer training program go.

That is so horrible that some places still discriminate against sex. It's ironic cause the movie is about discriminating and schools are doing it today just in a different way.

how did the guys get to see this movie anyway? if theyre in fifth grade and its rated pg 13 it shouldnt be allowed. in fact im in 9th grade and 15 and its not allowed even if it is educational like Red Tails is. second off the guys got to see a new movie and the girls got to see a movie that came out years ago. if there is no room why cant they see another movie in the movie theater and let them choose?

This is exactly like the court case US V. Virginia where Virginia set up an only boys military facility and when the US sues, the set up and all girls one but the supreme court ruled it unconstitutional bc it was not equal in prestige. Who cares if it's just a movie? Girls deserve to have equal opportunities.

The feminists really need to choose their battles with a lot more precision... how many of the girls really wanted to go watch a movie about pilots? I know i certainly didn't in the 5th grade. What everybody should be a lot more concerned about is 5th graders seeing a PG-13 movie.

report

by CrazyPie on 2/21/2012 5:43:55 PM

I think that seems really sexist. I love action movies!!! Just because we're girls doesn't automatically mean that we are all into chick flicks or something. Like I said, I love some kick-butt movies, and that school should have thought more about the choice they made, if i were one of those girls, i would be writing a letter to the administrator and having a talk with the teacher who made that decision...

And I'm like, really for girls, so this really ticks me off. I would have been going on and on about it if they would make me do that. >Frown

I can see how the reasoning may be understandble to some, it may also been that some of the girls may not have been to intrested in seeing Red Tails but I have seen the movie, I`m a girl and I thought it was great! If anything people should have been picked to go on a first comes first serves base. Just my opinion...

That's so sexist. Talk about irony, especially with the movie that they were seeing. They should have sent out a permission slip to all of the students, and the first 5,700 (the number of students allowed to go) to submit their form wouuld go.
