Ever
dreamed of competing among the best?
Racing
Dreams’ Annabeth,
Josh and Brandon do too and have their eyes set on the prize: The
national championship trophy of go-kart racing.
This new
documentary (premiering
Thursday, Feb. 23, on PBS)
follows three young athletes in their quest to be future NASCAR
racers as they practice and compete in the Pavement Series, a
yearlong championship of five different races across the country, put
together by the World Karting Association.
The film
follows 12-year-old Josh, who grew up in Michigan’s car-county and
started racing when he was 5, and 13-year-old Brandon, a North
Carolina native who uses racing as a way to escape his difficult home
life.
But the
biggest draw to us is Annabeth Barnes, an 11-year-old girl who loves
the rush of the track. Motivated and free spirited, Annabeth enjoys
competing against—and beating—boys in a sport where girls are
considered a minority. As you’ll soon see in this documentary,
though, the North Carolina native has come to a roadblock: Pursue her
love of racing, which requires her to travel almost every weekend, or
maintain the life of a regular kid.
Annabeth’s
not the only one facing this dilemma. As the tour goes on, the three
stars face adolescence and all that comes with it: First-time
romances, concerns about relationships with their parents and the
challenges that slim their chances of achieving their dreams.
So, what
