You start crushing on a new-to-school cutie…and he asks your
bud out. You get a solid B on the history test you spent all weekend studied
for…
she breezes through with a perfect
score. You make the lacrosse team…she scores the game-winning goal. You love your BFF, really you do, but
when she seems to have all the luck, it’s hard not to get jealous. Feeling the
green monster creepin’ up on ya? Here’s how to fight back…and keep your
friendship totally fab.
Repeat after me…
Your best friend is not trying to upstage you. Your best
friend is not trying to upstage
you. Good things happen all the time
without us even asking for them. That great grade she got when you were hoping
to scrape by with a pass? Inside, she was probably terrified of failing, too.
Just ‘cause everything seems just ducky on the outside doesn’t mean your pal is
perfect…nor is she trying to look perfect, either. Take her accomplishments in
stride, sweetie, and don’t let them diminish your own.
Toot your own horn
Everyone likes to be in the spotlight once in awhile—and
that’s A-OK, babe! While nobody likes a braggart, your crew will never fault
you for gleefully showing off that blue ribbon you scored last weekend…so long
as your daily caf lunch convo doesn’t become a highlights reel of your every
triumph. Don’t wait for the applause and pats on the back. Go out there and
grab it.
Tell her how you feel
Chances are your bud has absolutely no idea what her
victories are doing to yours. So clue her in! Have a heart-to-heart, and let
her know that while you know she’s not
doing any of it on purpose, you really feel like your own accomplishments are
insignificant next to hers. Don’t ask her to change what she’s doing—after all,
if she’s not trying to one-up you, there’s not a whole lot she can do about it.
But once she understands that you need a boost, she’ll know to talk up your
triumphs. Silly as it may sound, this’ll lead to you feeling better about
yourself and your relationship growing stronger than ever before.
Focus on Y-O-U
Whether or not your best girl’s luck changes or not, it’s
time to focus 100 percent on you. Remember all of the ah-mazing things that
have happened to you lately, like the glowing praise your art teacher gave ya
for your latest painting. Hold these close to your heart, and you’ll find the
green monster will never rear its ugly
head again.
