Critic's Pick: The Hunger Games

Check these out, too...

  • 5 movie couples we can't wait to see in theaters
  • Book characters we'd totally date
  • The biggest OMG celeb moments of the week
  • Dress like Katniss Everdeen all spring
  • Book series you've gotta start this summer
Correction: The world is watching. Audiences nationwide—soon to be worldwide—are becoming immersed in The Hunger Games, in it’s original novel form and the big screen adaptation. And this reader and viewer, for one, can’t look away for fear of missing a piece of the action.

Fans may be disappointed, momentarily, by the movie’s speed—as with any good adaptation, we lose many details that are not absolutely essential. They may not like the choppiness of the camera work and editing, which makes you feel as though you really are watching the 74th Annual Hunger Games alongside the citizens of Panem. They may not like the wide-eyed naiveté of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss, who feels subtly less complex without the aid of the novel’s internal monologue. They may dislike the casting of a brooding Liam Hemsworth as Gale and the inconsistent Josh Hutcherson as Peeta.

But I think you’ll find very few fans and new-to-the-series viewers who will not walk away from The Hunger Games feeling satisfied, intrigued and very, very thoughtful.

Hear this, doubters: Gary Ross knew exactly what he was doing when he signed on to direct this film. And he delivers. The Hunger Games is as real as any diehard could imagine. It captures the immense fear and resignation of the districts, and then seconds later, the glee the Capitol takes in the meaningless slaughter of 23 children each and every year.

The Games are billed as a pageant, like Toddlers and Tiaras but with far more serious consequences when the Tributes take to the stage. And you get to see the pageantry—the parades, the wild revelry, the game show-like atmosphere ushered in by host Caesar Flickerman (played by the always incredible Stanley Tucci).

But you also see the flipside of the gay Capitol coin. The people of the districts, in contrast to Effie Trinket’s satin and feathers, live a life tinged by shades of mud and dust. And magically, the audience is transported between the two. One moment, the scenes unfolding on the screen repulse us, aching to comfort Prim when she awakes from a nightmare that she’s been chosen as Tribute. The next, our eyes are glued to the screen as we will Katniss and Peeta, the star-crossed lovers of District 12, to conquer their competition.

It’s a juxtaposition that had me coming out of the theater quiet, considering what I’d just seen rather than gasping over the (brief) romance between Katniss and Peeta. The Hunger Games is most certainly a good movie. It’s engrossing, the characters are sympathetic and well cast, the visuals stunning. But most importantly of all, I think, it makes you question this society (whose Capitol is disturbingly reminiscent of Washington, D.C., might I add, in its monuments and reflection pools), and by extension, our own. Could we become Panem?

Catch The Hunger Games, in theaters now, and think about it. Then come back and let us know what you think.

Yes The Hunger Games could happen in America.I know it sounds ridiculus, but think about it for a little bit.We have a President who rules over us,a very wealthy upper class(capital citizens and sponsers),and a middle and lower class(districts). It's getting to the point that there was almost a law passed to allow anyone to carry a gun and shoot someone if they were bothering. It's scary how close we're getting. After I first read THG I thought about this very topic.Think about yourself ,I dare you,and you will be scared by the results.

The cries were silent-quiet n long-nonstop! Idk y I cried tho..cuz I already read the books...I cried when Katniss volunteered as tribute for Prim...it's wired cuz they show tht part in the trailers but I didn't during the trailers! And the second time I cried wud b wen Rue dies. I went to the theaters with my bro and my cousins without my parents or their parents n out of us four...I was the only one crying!

I went to the midnight premiere and it was AWESOME!!! they might have left out a few details and could have made it a little better, but it is DEFINITELY my favorite movie. By far. I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES!!!! Smile

I would have loved to see all the detail in the movie from the book, but if it meant having to stay another hour, I couldn't have done it... I had to use the restroom the WHOLE TIME!!!! :p

I absolutley loved the movie! Of course, the book was a million times better. The moiety left out a lot of details, like the avix, Katniss's relationship with Gale, the mocing jay pin, the kissing in the cave, and the mutts eyes were supposed to be the eyes of the fallen tributes. ***SPOILER ALERT*** they didn't show how Katniss didn't really like Peeta, how she did it all for sponsers. That really upset me, because it was a major detail. After that, Peeta is heartbroken in the other books. ***YOU CAN READ NOW*** Over all, the movie could've been a teeny bit better. I wouldn't have minded staying another hour to see all the details, would u?

@Kenzielynn:

They did kiss! Remember when they were in the cave, and the people were watching in the factory and Gale got really jealous? (This was in the book AND the movie!) I saw it last night and remember it really well!Smile PS: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE MOVIE!Smile IT IS NOW MY FAVE!

when katniss & beeta kissed, the entire theater screamed and clapped! It was such a good movie, but since my friends and I had to sit near the front, we got dizzy. It was worth the wait <33

I liked the movie, but I pay attention to detail, and that's not always possible in movies. It was a great book, but the movie couldn't been improved if Katniss had narrated her thoughts. Otherwise, the movie would've been a bit confusing and lacking in explanations for people who haven't read the books. Great movie, just not completely true to the book.

report

by WritingChic on 3/24/2012 4:34:48 PM

I liked it but it didn't have enough detail or depth. I read all the books and in the movie it felt almost like completely different characters. There was no relationship building to understand everyone's relationships. Nor was there an explantion of the significance of her father dying, the mockingjay pin, or the revolution. I was not satisfied.

Loved it!!
SPOILER ALERT
katniss n peeta didn't kiss once! N in th book that's all they do in the cave. That was the only bad thing n I loved the rest. I cried when rue died jumped when the mutts came! Ot was over all AMAZING

I didn't see the movie, but my friend saw it at midnight(I'm so jealous)and she said there wasn't much detail too. I'm almost done the book(I'm about 5 pages after you find out who won). I can't wait to see the movie, my class is going on a field trip to see it!

Saw the movie tonight. I thought it was great, although it lacked some depth with katniss and peeta's relationship and with rue. Also it moved a little to fast. But besides that, it was great!

Saw the movie today and almost feel like I was expecting more than what I saw. It did move fast and left out important parts, like when Madge gives her the pin instead of getting it at the store. But the movie was still interesting because of it's differences from the book. All the girls but me screamed at this one part when the dog monster things jump out. LOL!!

I loved the movie! It did move kinda fast but once the games got going I forgot all about it! I thought that jennifer lawrence was amazing....i had doubts about her playing Katniss before....I didnt think shed be able to do it. AND I LOVED PEETA! I thought josh hutcherson did amazing.

Yeah, I just saw the movie with one of my friends. I do think it moved kinda fast and a lot of the things weren't really explained. Because I'd read the books, I filled in the extra details but my friend was kinda confused the whole time.

I am seeing the movie tomorrow because me bestie couldn't see the movie tonight. My friend said it was the best movie ever. She said it was emotional and made her cry, it was intense and a bloody in the beginning but nothing too much. She said the actors really were like their characters. My other friends saw it and said it was good but not the best. She said she knows the book is always better then the movie. She said the same thing about the violence in the beginning and being emotional. She also said they skipped some details and changed some things. I personally am excited, I just hope it isn't scary or anything!!!

so i watched this movie twice already once at midnight and again about two hours ago. I have to say that although the movie was good, it wasn't in my opinion great. The costume designs were bad and nothing like what I imagined cinna's greatness would look like. The guys were hot, but didn't have enough screentime. The movie didn't get to know the tributes well enough for you to truly feel moved by their deaths. However a lot of this was made up for by the incredible acting abilities of the actors and actresses. Their emotions, pain, grief, and humor all felt mind-blowingly real and that for the most part made up for the rest of the movie. So yes this movie was good, but it did not live up to the expectations set by Suzanne Collin's amazing book

I saw the premier at 12:01am. I seriously am in love with that movie. There were a few details that they changed like the mockingjay pin which Madge, the mayor's daughter had given her after she and Peeta were announced as tribute. Prim wasnt the one who gave it back to her. Also, didn't Peeta get his ankle bitten off by those dogs at the end? hm.

Just went to see the movie with my besties. Yup there were some parts that were wrong and it did feel a bit more rushed than the books. But I LOVED it!! It was from different POVs because it was a movie, which gave it a much wider picture. It made me laugh and cry, it was different from the book, but then again, so are most movie adaptations. It had a different feel but I think that the books and the movie complement eachother. I smell Oscars!! Freaky to think that it could happen in our society...
