Wanna stay fit but marathons aren’t exactly your thing? Don’t sweat it! A new study shows that you don’t have to log miles ‘n’ miles on the treadmill to do your body good.

 

Scientists rounded up a group of usually healthy active young adults to test a Q: What happens when typically active young adults are told to take it easy? They set up a bunch of volunteers with a device that checks their blood sugar levels as well as pedometers and arm bands that measure their activity. They were also asked to keep a food journal.

 

For the first three days of the study, the group lived normally—that means walking at least 10,000 steps (a number recommended by doctors) and eating fairly healthfully (no blood sugar spikes). Next, they were told to halve their steps for the following three days. So they took the elevator instead of the stairs, got delivery instead of take-out. The kicker? They maintained the same diet as before…but their blood sugar spiked dramatically after each meal. These spikes have been linked to the same test results derived from those who are developing heart disease and type-2 diabetes. Not cool!

 

The key to staying healthy isn’t necessarily to eat cleanly 24/7 or to put in killer workouts every day. It’s to eat good-for-ya foods with the indulgences that keep you satisfied, and to work a good amount of exercise into your daily routine. We’ve got a few easy ways to give your health a good-for-ya boost:

 

1. Make easy swaps – real fruit instead of fruit snacks, brown rice instead of white, Greek yogurt instead of your typical variety

 

2. Help out around the house – Unpack the groceries for mom, unload the dishwasher, take the trash to the curb and Fido for a walk

 

3. Gabbing with your girls on the phone? Don’t just sit there—walk ‘n’ talk! Texting up a storm? Set your phone down across the room so you have to get up to send another message.

MOD MOD MOD!
I really want to start working out more, because I feel really... ugly I guess. Except I stay at my mom's work for most of the day, so I don't really get a chance to. I do have access to the outside though... Any easy exercises I can do?

In general, doing sports outdoors is much healthier because you got the benefit of fresh air and interesting surroundings that won't bore you as easily as the walls of a gym for example! I am a dancer so I am dancing at least two nights a week,plus rehearsals for my dance productions which are fairly intense. Still,I need to lose a little weight. What are some ways I can try to be healthier? I've been trying to get up and move more and eat healthier,too.
Also,in one of my dances I have to be lifted by this guy.Its not that the guy creeps me out(hes older than me and really nice and has experience with this sort of thing!)but the fear of falling.How can i get over this?

I am a swimmer in the summer and I'm on a swim team too.I am afraid that i'll get my period and i know i'll have to put a tampon in and it scares me and i don't even like thinking about it. How do i get over it and is there anyway i can swim during my period
P.s. my mom MIGHT let me stay home during my period,

Unfortunately you'll need a tampon if you're going to go swimming.  There's no reason to be scared, you don't feel a thing.

Im very tall and skinny.Many people say i need to eat more, then the other half says one day(with my high metabolism, and the junky food im eating) im going to become fat later!!! Im so worried about my body and how underweight i am....what should i do? should i still exercise normally but watch the foods i eat?

That sounds about right as to what you should do.  You can't really beat your metabolism, you're born with it so you can only adapt to it.

MOD MOD MOD MOD! I need to lose about 20 pounds. I exercise often in gym class and the actual gym, and I started a diet. Is it going to work? What should I take away or add? For breakfast, i am having a cup of Greek Yogurt. Lunch, string cheese and an apple. Snack, banana. Lots of water. Dinner, whatever my family is having. I am a vegetarian.THANKS SO MUCH!

i have never done a 5k how do you train if youre not a regular runner....theres a more than a month and i can start training now....any ideas?thnx!



Hey babe,

If you're starting up with a 5k, I'd work on your endurance the most. To make sure you'd be able to run the whole length of the course.  You should also keep in mind that you're going to need to pace yourself.

Maybe start running a few times a week, and each time you run, do another 2-5 more minutes than the day before.

Im supposed to go swimming today but im on my period. Can i just wear a panyliner instead of a tampon cuz i cant get the tampon in? or could i just go without anything cuz my flow is really light? ASAP thankss



Hey babe,

A pantyliner won't be very reliable to absorb anything since it will be full of pool water, so your best bet is to figure out the works of a tampon.  They have pamphlets in the boxes on how-to.
