Veg out! How to make the switch

Check these out, too...

  • Check this out: 30 seconds to fruitful eating
  • Could you deal with an all-veg cafeteria menu?
  • 10 things to tell your mom anytime
  • 7 ridiculous caffeine-laced products (and why they just might disappear)
  • My dad is sexually abusing me. How can I tell my mom?
Whether you’re doing it for the animals or for your own health, cutting out animal products is a huge decision to make. Will it work for your lifestyle? Will it work for your fam? And how the heck are you gonna stick to it?! Read on for our veg-out guide, girlies.

Step 1: Make sure it’s really what you want

There is no reason to upset or confuse your parents if you aren’t even positive that you want to become a vegetarian. Make a pros and cons list, then ultimately just make the decision for yourself. You’re the one who has to eat the food, so don’t make the decision based on what anyone else.

Step 2: Do some research

Before you take the plunge and remove meat from your diet, ask any friends who are vegetarians what it is like, how they do it and some of their fave recipes. Look online and search for some veggie dishes that you think you would like. Make a list of some of your fave, easy-to-make recipes. Find out what vegetarian options they have at your school and your fave restaurants.

Step 3: When to have The Talk

Your parents might feel betrayed or sad if you are straying from how they raised you, so this conversation isn’t something that should just be blurted out. Don’t just come out and tell them you want to be a vegetarian when you’re in the movies, walking through the mall or at a block party. Think about when your parents seem to be the most calm and relaxed. Maybe it is when your parents come home from work and they can relax for the rest of the night. Maybe it is during the weekend. Maybe it is when they first wake up and have their coffee. Whatever the time or place, just make sure they seem like they are in a good mood.

Step 4: What to say

Now that you know when and where you are going to talk to your family, you have to figure out how exactly to tell them. As said before, don’t blurt it out and completely surprise your family. Perhaps butter them up a first with complements. Tell them how much you love their cooking, but that you don’t think you want to eat meat any more. Tell them that it is nothing against them, just that you just have to make this change for yourself. Explain that you don’t expect them to change, but that they should accept that you want to change. This is where all your research will come in handy. If you show your family that you have done the research and really thought about this decision, then they will look at you as an adult and they will realize that you put a lot of thought into this decision.

Step 5: Live it

Ask Mom and Dad if they can incorporate a veggie dish into every meal. Keeping some go-tos in the fridge or freezer, like a batch of soup or black bean burgers, will help get dinner on the table without stressing ‘em out because of your new diet. Eat up, encourage your sibs to sample your new faves and soon being vegetarian won’t be alternative or weird—it’ll be just another option for family din. Yum!

I've been veggie with no eggs (but I'm not vegan, I still drink milk) my whole life and if you know what they did to the animals, you'd wanna be one too. They drive bars through cow's heads at the most HUMANE factories. They make hens lay eggs nonstop and when they can't lay anymore, they kill them. It's sickening...

I'm sort of a vegetarian to a point, I'm on my way to a full fledged one but my doctor wants it to be gradual since I'm in the middle of hardcore training. Always talk to your doctor about it. I passed out in a middle of a spar because I hadn't been consuming enough protein and my muscles just didn't want to work.Right now its fish and veggies( yes I know fish is meat chill, I'm working on it.
I'm not becoming one for moral reasons(though it does help, make me want meat less when I know the animal had to go through for me to eat it) but because my bff discovered she had a protein disorder that makes it hard for her to consume meat. This helped my parents get on board. Also, ya'll some states offer scholarships for vegetarians. Whatever your reasons, talk to your doctors, take vitamin, and make healthy choices( whether you're a meat-eater or not)

I've been vegan for my entire lifeSmile. Those of you who are worried about becoming vegetarian because you love meat so much: there are vegan versions of every type of animal product under the sun that I'm sure taste pretty much the same! But I wouldn't know because I've never had meatSmile. But it must be closeSmile

I've been vegetarian almost a year. I urge others to learn more about where meat comes from, factory farming, and the benefits of a veggie diet (environmental, health-wise, and for the animals). "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safran Foer is a great book that's honest and doesn't really guilt trip. I would never go back on my decision to cut meat out of my diet.

MOD MOD MOD
I have been vegan for about a month now. My mom was watching Dr. Oz one day a he was talking about soy. He said that soy could lead to breast cancer. I am really scared because I have been eating quite a bit of soy ever since I started being vegan (soy milk, soy cheese, smartdogs, smart bacon, etc.) Is it really true that soy can lead to breast cancer?

Hey girlie,

Check out this article from breastcancer.org about soy and the link to breast cancer. I know there are a lot of scientific terms and confusing conclusions, but basically it's saying - soy in moderate amounts can be healthy and can actually help you defend against lots of illnesses, but it's not proven. Just like what Dr. Oz said isn't proven. Unfortunately, we just don't know for sure. The best thing to do is, as the article says, eat a moderate amount of soy each day and ask a doctor/nutritionist if you aren't sure you're eating a healthy amount! <3
