How to save cash while prepping for prom

Check these out, too...

  • Spring hair bling under $10
  • Get gorgeous spring date night makeup
  • 16 fun in the sun summertime dates
Sure, it’s easy to drop plenty of billz on your dream prom night. The hair, the makeup, the nails, we could go on…and that list doesn’t even include the sure-to-be-pricey perfect dress. But what’s essential to drop your hard-earned cash on, and what’s not? We’re demystifying the dos and don’ts of prom prep spending.

Hair

Save: The updo We’re all for the at-home updo. After all, unless you know your stylist really well, you’re taking a big risk by putting your tresses in someone else’s hands. Doing your own hair is totally doable, but requires tonsa practice. Find a few styles that you like, and spend a Saturday trying to practice them on yourself. Have Mom or your sis offer extra hands if need be, but don’t settle on something super intricate. The simpler, the better. Head HERE for inspiration.

Splurge: The cut A week or so before the big day, get a quick bang trim or lop off any dead ends. Leave this part to the professionals, trust us!

Makeup

Save: The salon app Sure, getting your makeup done by a professional is totally worth it for your wedding day. But for prom night? There aren’t nearly as many photos. And while you still wanna look amazing, is it really worth it to drop all that cash on something you’re at risk of sweating off on the dance floor just a few hours later? We say head to the makeup counter at your local department store and ask for a makeover. The experts there can help you find your best hues and give you a few at-home tips, too. What shades look best with your eye color? The answer’s right HERE.

Splurge: New products/tools Your brushes are totally abused, your mascara’s drying out and your black eyeliner pencil is down to a nub. Treat yourself to some new products and a new brush or two to make your at-home application a little more fancy and festive.

Nails

Save: The mani/pedi Buddy up with a BFF and give each other spa manis. Stick to something simple—going all Gaga with 3D nail art is probs not your best bet here. We’ve got tons of fresh ideas for your tips.

Splurge: The perf polish Finding the perfect hue to match your dress is no small feat. And a luxe polish nowadays can run you $9-$16, but you’ll have it way longer than that mani. Find out what shade best matches your personality, HERE.

What are you shelling out the dough for, and what will you save on? Spill all in the comments, below.

MODMODMODMODMOD plz answer!
Ok i have reeaallyy pale skin and i dont want to tan (cause i know it hurts ur skin cells) and dont want to use a tanning bed idk what to do! And i dont want to be super tan i want to be like barely tan and want it to be even so what can i do to get a little tan plz answer!

Hey girlie,

Check out this article for protecting your skin against sun (and against tanning) - if you want to get a smidge of tan, try using a self-tanner and washing it off about an hour after applying. Since you leave it on for a shorter amount of time, it'll soak in less, which makes for a more subtle tan Smile Or you could just spend time out in the sun, but use LOTS of sunblock so you avoid burning. You'll get a little bit of healthy color - and that's fine by us! Smile

MOD MOD MOD!
Okay so I'm am going to a formal which is different from prom you get dressed up in modest gowns like cinderella, but I don't know what so spend money on.
I have a dress already and I have shoes.
I want to have my hair done for 15 a curl with a little something to it? Because I don't have a curling iron and my friends can't help me.
I'm going to do my nails but should I get a color that matches my dress? I have liquid foundation but it's extremely old but I use it anyway. Should I invest in a new liquid foundation that fits me better and will it look better?

Hey Pinkbunny888,

Your formal sounds like it will be a lot of fun! Who doesn't like getting dressed up like Cinderella? However, occasions like these can get quite costly. Buying a curling iron would be a good idea. You can find them cheap at places like Target and Wal-Mart and they come in handy all the time. The nail color you choose will depend on the color of your dress. If your dress is bright or has a pattern, stick to simple nails. Try a single, muted tone. If your dress is monotone, have fun with your nails! Go bright or try an ombre pattern (http://www.girlslife.com/post/2012/03/09/Spring-nail-trend-alert-Presh-pastels.aspx). Old makeup can be bad for your skin, so you'll definitely want to get some new foundation. Again, you can find this at Target. Take a makeup expert with you (mine is my mom!), who will help you pick out the best shade.

Have a great formal!

I got my prom dress 50% off at Sears, and it's SUCH a gorgeous dress. I got really lucky.
For prom I'm doing y own makeup at home 'cuz I'm a makeupaholic. I'm having a friend come over to help do my hair using youtube tutorials, and I'm dying it at home with a friend too. I might get it trimmed before then though, just so it looks super healthy. The one thing I'm really splurging on is a pedi and mani. I want nice feet in my prom sandals. ;)
