That’s what some education experts are hoping for in the not-too-distant future, the Washington Post reports. They’re calling it a “full day” of school—though why they think 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. isn’t long enough to be called a “full day,” we’re not entirely clear on. Anyway, the notion is that the extra two or three hours could help American students be competitive with students abroad. The time could be used for longer classes, tutoring and one-on-one time with teachers.
What do you think of this proposition, babes? Is it a step in the right direction or too much time in the classroom? And if they did add a few more hours to the school day, how should they be spent?

POSTED IN school, In the News
Well I'm from New Zealand so this won't really affect me. But I just wanted to give some perspective on how my school does it. NZ is pretty high up there in the world of education and our school day for the equivalent of high school goes from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm with a 20 min morning break and a 45 min lunch. We only have 5 classes a day, the same ones each day, except for Friday where we start an hour later and only have four classes. We still achieve high results and if we wanted, we can do all those other extracurricular things. I don't think that adding more hours to a school day will change our results too much, we need time to recover from school. To me it's a case of either shorter and more focused day OR longer and more distracted day. I know which one I would pick!

Honestly, it will just make things worse! Kids will end up not wanting to even come to school if they know that the days will be longer! We need time to refresh ourselves, and actually ENJOY our time while we are still young!! Also, it would be too much for teachers too! Alot of them have families to take care of and they cant do that when they are gone for those extra hours! I completely disagree, although i know they think it is in our best interest, i feel like there are more cons then pros.

I think kids getting under a C should have 30 min hands on time with a teacher!!! But I'm homeschooled soo:/ but kids that have to get up at 5 a.m. Would not get enough sleep especially if they had animals to take care of at night!!!

A lot of you are saying this is ridiculous and stupid. That makes you un-analytical. Think about it, just because they are increasing the hours doesn't mean it will all go toward learning. They would probably add a morning break if you don't have one; and maybe even an evening break. They would also probably increase the lunch time ( we only get 30. Min at my school) plus their would be more time for fun hands on activities. plus we would have less homework. However in my opinion they should only increase it by 45 min. Then, have extra one on one time for those getting under a c.
