That’s what some education experts are hoping for in the not-too-distant future, the Washington Post reports. They’re calling it a “full day” of school—though why they think 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. isn’t long enough to be called a “full day,” we’re not entirely clear on. Anyway, the notion is that the extra two or three hours could help American students be competitive with students abroad. The time could be used for longer classes, tutoring and one-on-one time with teachers.
What do you think of this proposition, babes? Is it a step in the right direction or too much time in the classroom? And if they did add a few more hours to the school day, how should they be spent?

POSTED IN school, In the News
If they make us have longer days, they better give us a study hall halfway thru the day. For a hour please!

If there was a longer school day I would not have any energy left over.

We need SHORTER SCHOOL DAYS WHILE LEARNING MORE MATERIALS!
by HappyFeet16 on 5/3/2012 10:05:38 AM
No! We just need to be learning MORE during the school day! Our teachers are not good enough to cover enough material in a short amount of time. This would only benifit teachers. DONT DO IT!

Actually, it isn't the hours that are the problem. There are plenty of studies that suggest that the reason as to why we are academically behind countries such as China is because the length of breaks that kids get. Summer vacation is the biggest problem. Kids have three months without school, and in many cases they end up forgetting a third of what they learned. This is why in the fall when school starts back up again, the teachers often have to spend a month or so reviewing the material they supposedly learned in the last school year. So instead of using those months to teach kids new things, they're being wasted on stuff that the kids really should already know. Instead of longer school days, what actually needs to happen is shorter breaks. A month or so off in the summer, and then maybe a month or so off in the winter.
