GL's Fab Fiction Contest is back!

Check these out, too...

  • "For You" - An original poem
  • GL's May Summer Fun Giveaway!
  • Red Petals - An original short story
  • GL's Most Awesome Mom contest: Be the best daughter ever
  • Enter to win a Singer One sewing machine and more!
Have you got the write stuff? Prove it! GL’s amazing Fab Fiction Contest is back and better than ever. Send us your best short stories and keep your fingers crossed, cuties, ‘cause there are some awesome prizes—and serious bragging rights—on the line.

Last year, our first annual Fab Fiction Contest received more than 300 entries! We read the short stories you sent in, picked our top three and sent ‘em off to our celeb author judge, Kirsten Miller. Kirsten chose our winning story, Cobie Ray’s Kiss and Don’t Tell. And our editors thought Cobie Ray’s story was so awesome, we published it in our February/March 2012 issue.

Whoa.

This year, we’re upping the ante. We have three of your favorite authors judging your stories. We’ll be announcing them throughout the summer. First up is Lauren Kate, author of the Fallen series. And we’ve got a pile of prizes for the best stories, from free books to cool new journals and fab writing supplies. You could even se your story published in an upcoming issue of Girls’ Life! Sweet, right?

Contest rules:

1. You must submit a piece of totally original fiction (500-1,500 words) between now and July 17th, 2012. Stories should be emailed to contests@girlslife.com with “Fab Fiction Contest” in the subject line.

2. The piece must be either in a Microsoft Word document or pasted in the body of your email.

3. Please double-space your submission and use size 12 Times New Roman font, so our readers will be able read everything you’ve written.

4. Include your name and age at the top of your entry.

5. Each girl can submit up to 3 stories!

Get scribblin’, girlies!

I am really excited for this contest and I enjoy writing very much. There is only one thing I am confused about; What does it mean when it said "Please double-space your submission"
Does it mean to double space after every word or what?
Thanks! =)

My story might invovle cutting and depression. It won't go into great detail, but it's an important part of the storyline. Would that be okay?
Thanks in advance,
Baily

Hey Baily,

This is YOUR piece of original fiction, so if you want to explore a dark subject, go for it. Make sure each part is necessary and you aren't just using a certain "controversial" element just to use it. As long as you stay true to yourself while also keeping the story Young Adult appropriate (and especially if it could help a reader), I don't see why you couldn't write about these common feelings <3

In the article it says,
" 3. Please double-space your submission and use size 12 Times New Roman font, so our readers will be able read everything you’ve written. "
What does "double-space" mean?

Hey girlie,

That's a setting in Word that will make your submission easier for us to read because it puts more space in between each line. You can change the setting by going to Format >> Paragraph >> Line Spacing. Select "Double" or "2.0," depending on your version of Word. And get used to it, because all the essays you'll write in high school/college will probably require it!
