This year’s Scripps Bee was a record-breaking one. The competition, which started last week, featured the youngest speller in the Bee’s history, 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison. But it was Snigdha who triumphed with the word “guetapens,” which is an ambush or a trap—bonus points for including that one in your next essay!
Snigdha dreams of being a doctor, but according to her Mom, she thinks that’ll be a cakewalk after competing in the spelling bee. For now, though, we hope she’s relaxing and enjoying her hobbies—coin collecting and Sherlock Holmes, natch.

That is awesome! Congratulations to Snigdha! My mom says that I would enjoy being an English professor or a journalist when I get older because I'm so good at English/spelling/writing, but I've never even heard of guetapens! It'd be extremely hard to win a Spelling Bee, so I'm always amazed by the people that do! And I think it's great that her dad taught her how to spell when she was so young.

I also heard her dad wrote a computer program to help with the pronunciation and spelling and that she practiced every day for hours. That just proves if you want it bad enough you can get it and it helps if your dad is a computer genius to write a program like that.

MOD MOD MOD Okay so on one of the last days of school, some of my classmates who I considered my friends were being really mean to this kid in our class. I felt so bad because the kid didn't realize that he was even being picked on! I don't know what to think now... should I be friends with those mean kids or not? It kinda ruined the end of the year. Hey girl, It's up to you. You can always be friends with them and stand up for the kid, everyone shows a bit of their unkind side every now and then. Who knows, maybe you'll even help them realize that they can come off as heartless doing things like that. Or, you can end the friendship, your decision. Jordan S.
