Wanna find a way to make your meals healthier? Instead of bugging Mom to go shopping, try taking a turn farming your own food this summer. A small garden will give you fresh fruits and veggies to add to your usual sandwiches or to mix in with dinner side dishes. You only need a little patch of yard space, and the best part? It’ll give ya somethin’ to do on those summer days when your little bro is hogging the TV or your go-to gals are MIA.

If you’re not the most patient gal, head to the nearest nursery and pick up some small plants that have already been started. You can pop ‘em in the ground and won’t have to wait as long as you will for seeds. But if you’ve got a little more time on your hands and you’re lookin’ for a project that’ll be yours and yours alone, grab some of those tiny plant babies and get to work! Certain seeds have to be in the ground at certain times, or else they won’t grow. So for the beginning of June, here are our top picks:

    Beautiful Beans

There are lotsa different kinds of beans, but the best are green snap beans. They’ll give ya tons of produce per plant, and most people like eating ‘em. They take 50 days to grow and need about 6 inches of space around them.

Burpees Stringless Green Pod, $4 for 1 packet of 2 oz. of seeds, burpee.com

  • garden-2.jpg
    Crunchy Corn

This golden staple of summer is great for backyard BBQs, and this particular brand will keep ya stocked all season long. After 64 days, you’ll have more ears than you ever thought you’d need. Just remember to plant the seeds about a foot apart, since they’ll get to be pretty tall.

Early and Often Hybrid, $6 for 1 packet of 200 seeds, burpee.com

  • garden-3.jpg
    Cool Cucumbers

Once cucumbers start growin’, they tend to take up a bit of room and can spread out about 3 feet. So if you’re space is squished, these might not be your best bet. They are super productive, though, and they’ll be all grown up in just 55 days.

Sweet Burpless Hybrid, $4 for 1 packet of 30 seeds, burpee.com

  • garden-4.jpg
    Wild Watermelon

These juicy fruits are good for more than just seed-spitting contests. Add ‘em into a fruit salad or just munch on them plain for a fat-free dessert. When you’re planting, group five or six seeds together in mounds about 6 feet apart. They’ll pop up in late summer, since they take 80 days to grow.

Bush Sugar Baby, $4 for 1 packet of 25 seeds, burpee.com

  • garden-5.jpg
    Savory Squash

Yellow squash tastes great grilled and in casseroles. These plants produce lots of veggies but don’t take up as much room as watermelon, even though they’re put in the ground in the same group style. They should be ready to pick in 50 to 55 days.

Summer Saffron, $4 for 1 packet of 50 seeds, burpee.com

  • garden-6.jpg
    Outstanding Okra

This tasty green veggie is a fab addition to soups, stews, or grilled creations. Plant the seeds about six inches apart, water ‘em, wait 56 days, and voila! You’ll have a new cooking ingredient to spice up your summer meals.

Clemson Spineless, $4 for 1 packet of 100 seeds, burpee.com

Dear MOD,
During school and my 'normal routine' i am super active. I run track and cross country, and during school i have a practice every day for 1.5 hours. Recently i was told i need surgery on my hip and will be out of running for three months after surgery. its been about 4 months since so i will be out for a total of 7 months. I am freaking out about getting out of shape!! I am so used to eating whatever i want whenever I want cause i always run it off. I have a super fast metabolism, but im worried that if I eat how i eat when i play sports i will get really out of shape. I tried to break my eating habits but its really challenging and at this point i dont know what to do...please help if you can! I dont know how much i should cut my meals back and maybe i just need more motivation to eat less, I just dont know where to get it from.
Thanks sooo much and sorry its so long.
-Rach

Hey girl,

Try talking to your doc about what kind of movement you can still do while recovering from surgery. He will tell you your limits and if there is any kind of exercise you can still do. Though you can't run, you can probably still walk and walking every day can be just as beneficial an exercise. Since you won't be burning as many calories, you probably won't be as hungry! Hopefully you'll body will let ya know when enough is enough. Besides, you can still eat the same amount as long as it's healthy! Try munching on fruit or veggies when you get a craving!

MOD MOD MOD!!!
I know that this is off topic but I have became a vegetarian and I have lost about 10 pounds (which is good) but know my period is late. It isnt ever right on 28 days but thats okay because I am still irregular with it, but it is later then it has been before. What should I do?????

Hey girl,

It's normal for your period to be irregular at first, but it never hurts to see a doctor to be safe. That way you can make sure you're getting the nutrition you need since becoming a vegetarian.

My moms nosy and I'm having a sleepover on the last day of school. Last time I had a sleepover my friend talked about her ex and my mom easdroped and heard!!! The next day she was all like " ur friend got dumped? That sucks did I know the boy? Shes being a tad dramatic dont you think?" my basement is competly unprivatet with no door. We gossip a lot! I can't go in the yard cause of raccoons and in my bedroom would be worse! She's SOOOO nosy!!!! What do I do?

Hey girl,

Instead of trying to run from your mom, it sounds like you should have a talk with her about why it's bugging you. She'd feel less hurt if you talked to her directly! Make a compromise, like that you'll fill her in on what's up with your friends if she gives you time alone at sleepovers.

Take the stairs more than once. When you’re at home, run up and down the stairs three or four times before heading to your room. It’s a sneaky way to stay active.
