Real American role models

Everybody has at least one role model, even if ya don’t realize it. It could be your mom, your aunt, Amelia Earhart, Michelle Obama or the super cool babysitter you had when you were little. Well, here are four more awesome all-American babes that you can add to your list of role models, and a few tips so you can be just like ‘em.

Brains Over Brawn

Hillary Clinton grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and went to Wellesley College and Yale Law School. Before getting involved in politics, she worked as an attorney, an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas School of Law, and a mom. While her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was the governor of Arkansas, she began her lifelong work as an advocate of health care and also focused on children and family issues. Then when she became the First Lady, she got health care for millions of kids through the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and she helped to fix America’s adoption and foster care systems. In 2000, Clinton became the only First Lady to be a U.S. senator, and she now acts as the Secretary of State.

Lesson Learned: Don’t be afraid to show your smarts, even if it means intimidating a few guys.

The Muse of Civil Rights

Born an African American woman in Missouri in 1928, Maya Angelou suffered a lot of discrimination, which inspired her to work for change and to become a civil rights activist. She became a single mother shortly after finishing high school, but by the time she was 26, she was out pursuing her passion for the arts by performing in the opera Porgy and Bess in Europe. Angelou lived in Ghana for a time, teaching at the University of Ghana’s School of Music and Drama, and upon returning to the states, wrote books and poems that made her famous all over the world. She was the first African American woman to write a successful movie script, and she has remained active in politics, having served on two presidential committees in recent years.

Lesson Learned: Find your own way to speak out about what inspires you, whether it’s through music, art or writing.

Perf Performance

Kristi Yamaguchi stepped into the spotlight when she won the World Figure Skating Championships two years in a row and took home a gold medal from the 1992 Winter Olympics. She then became a professional skater for many years. At the same time, she decided to give back to the people around her by starting the Always Dream Foundation, which supports children’s activities that range from after-school mentoring programs to holiday celebrations at children’s shelters. Yamaguchi is now a member of four different halls of fame and was a winner on Dancing with the Stars in 2006.

Lesson Learned: No matter how good or bad things are going, look outside your own life and see how you can make a difference for others.

No Biz Like Showbiz

You’ve probably seen Oprah Winfrey on TV, either on her talk show or acting in movies. Now, she is a billionaire who owns more homes than you can count on one hand, but she wasn’t always that way. Her childhood was pretty rough, as she had to deal with molestation and was passed from one single parent to the other. She got her big break, though, when she was just 17 and landed a spot on the radio station WVOL. Then she quickly moved through the broadcasting industry until she became the first woman to produce and own her own talk show, which she used to promote good, healthy values. In 1993, Oprah championed the creation of a database of convicted child abusers in order to save others from the trauma she once endured, and today, she is one of the main philanthropists in the world.

Lesson Learned: Fight for your values, and don’t let circumstances or peer pressure make you give them up.

What are some ways to save up money and save it up fast wile earning money?

Hey chica! Start saving your money by putting it in a piggy bank or special area and limiting how often you take money from there. Then ways to earn money fast would be babysitting, picking up extra chores and asking your parents for allowance, weeding the neighbors garden, mowing lawns, or any other chores like these! Good luck! xoxo

Out of this list, I love Hilary Clinton. She's an amazing woman, and has so much potential in politics. I wish she would run for president again. She would be so much better in office than Sarah Palin of Michelle Bachman.

My mom is one of my role models. She's survived years of abuse at the hands of Catholic school preists, my biological father, and plenty of other people, and she still manages to get up every morning and live her life.

Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Anne Frank, Heather Corrina (founder of Scarleteen.com) Inez Mulholland, Harvey Milk, Andy Warhol, and Johnny Weir are my other role models, for various reasons.

Demi Lovato is my role model because what she went through. Yes, she checked herself into rehab and checked herself out, but because she thought something was wrong with her and she felt she was better. Not because of other people. She told others about what they were doing and that she was not going to be a victim of bullying. She describes that in her song, "Skyscraper".

Kristi Yamaguchi!!!! I LOVE her! Even more after this article! I did a report on her in school twice before and just had to fall in love with her. I mean, how can't you?! Another thing that makes Kristi so amazing is that she was born with club foot. That's one of out 4,000 reasons why I love her so much!!!!! To be that good at figure skating and have a foot disability? Amazing! I also have a foot issue (a bunion and short tendons) and she has taught me that no matter what seems to hold you back, nothing can hold you back from your dream. She didn't let that stop her, and I don't let my "baggage" stop me either. Kristi Yamaguchi is will always be my idol/role model.

Out of this article, my role model is Maya Angelou. My role model is Katy Perry. Katy Perry is my role model because she's not afraid to be herself, she's committed to staying to true to herself and her music is a great way of getting through situations. When I'm sad, I listen to Wide Awake. When my dad is getting on my nerves, I can listen to Hot N Cold (my dad is pretty much that way). Pearl and Firework helps me know that I'm different and should be proud and not to let anyone control me. Katy Perry is and always will be my role model. Luv ya Katy! <3

My role models are my mom, Nastia Liukin, and... Jordyn Wieber.
Mod Mod Mod!!!
My BFF lives in California and she came to visit today. We want to have a sleepover Saturday because she's leaving Sunday and is busy tomorrow, but I have this stupid family get- together to go to, and my mom doesn't want her coming over. I just saw my family and we can see them any old time ; besides, she's from California and I get to see her, like, 2 a year. Help!!!

Hey girlie,

Try reasoning with mom. What if she comes over later, or doesn't stay too long in the morning, and you stay out of her hair/don't make a mess, promise to get a certain # of hours of sleep... You get the idea. Put yourself in her shoes and ask what the problem is, then see if you can compromise to fix it. (Or maybe even push the sleepover to Friday night, since she might be busy during the day but will be free after dinnertime?) But there's no guarantee you'll get her to say yes, so you might not be able to have a sleepover this time around. If that's the case, hang out with her in another way! See a movie, go to the pool, grab dinner, even just get ice cream and chat. It sounds like a busy weekend for both of you, so try to work with everyone's schedules and you'll at least get to chill with her for a little while!
