Skincare: Style tips for sleeveless living

Class is over and the sun is out, which means tanks, bikinis and halter tops are probably first up to bat in your current wardrobe lineup.  But along with sleeveless living comes some not so pretty situations. From underarm stubble to bra bulge to pit stains, we’ve got ya’ covered!

Tip #1: Exfoliate

Want to banish body acne, get a closer shave and help prevent sunburn? A loofah and some exfoliating body wash are your secret weapons!

To prevent or get rid of pesky pimples on your shoulders, back or chest, try an exfoliating body wash. If your breakouts are mild, look for a product with salicylic acid. If that doesn’t do the trick, look for a wash with benzoyl peroxide.

Scrubbing away dead skin from your armpits will also help you shave closer to the skin and reduce ugly stubble.

Another perk? When you wash away dead skin, your SPF will absorb better into your top layer of skin, so you can stay outside longer!

We love: Sabon Lavender Apple Body Scrub, $30, sabonnyc.com

Tip #2: Protect your skin

Don’t leave your shoulders exposed to harmful UVA/UVB rays! Shoulders are one of the most common skin cancer sites so SPF is a MUST.

Look for a sunscreen with broad UVA and UVB protection with SPF 30+ and remember to reapply it every few hours.

We love: Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 30, $12, drugstore.com

Tip #3: Beat underarm stubble

For the smoothest pits, shave daily. For your closest shave, hold your arm behind your head so the skin stretches out and you can trim every inch. Hair under there grows in every direction, so shave up, down, left and right.

We love: Gillette Venus & Olay Razor, $12, drugstore.com

Tip #4: Don’t sweat it

Nothing ruins a fab outfit like pit stains! Look for an antiperspirant deodorant so you’ll smell great and be sweat-free. Make sure it’s gel or clear so you won’t be stuck with that chalky white stuff in your pits (yuck!).

You forgot to put on deodorant this morning? We’ve all been there! To avoid forgetting your deodorant, leave it in a place you won’t miss—like inside your shoes, or next to your contact lens case.

OR, if you’d rather not deal with it at all in the morning, apply a 24-hour deodorant before bed.

In a pinch, a dab of hand sanitizer under your arms will work to kill sweaty bacteria if you’ve forgotten your roll-on.

We love: Vichy 24hr Deodorant Care Stick for Sensitive Skin, $17, skincarerx.com

Tip #5: Get the right support

Don’t let an ill-fitting bra cramp your summer style. Bunching, gapping, loose straps, and back rolls, oh no!

Most undergarment stores offer free bra measurements and will help you pick out your perfect bra so you can quit guessing your size. Make sure the straps are adjustable and that the underwire isn’t digging into you. A lightly lined bra will create smooth curves under your tank—no popping out!

We love: Aerie Ella Lightly Lined Bra, sizes 32AA through 38DD, $25 (on sale!), aerie.com

I have a question, My mom says that you don't have to shave your arms, But I want to shave them, Should I or should I not? Btw, I have a bunch of ugly scars and scabs, The scars are from my habit of picking scabs, Is there a way to get rid of them?? School starts in like 13 days. Thanks!

Hey girl! Shaving your arms totally isn't necessary- trust me, no one notices your arm hair but you.  Plus, when the hair starts to grow back, it's going to look and feel weird- think of how prickley your legs get! You can try a scar cream (like Merderma) or rubbing vitamin E on your scars, but that will only fade them and not make them go away completely.  Time to break the habit of picking scabs! xoxo

Ok, so my skin is like a caramel color and thats my natrual color( but just a tad darker than caramel) . i dont tan at all. and i love my color, but wanted to know if there is any body wash or facial cleanser to make my color " glow" ? and to keep it clear without all those fancy expensive products? thanks Smile

Hey girl!  You don't need fancy products to keep your skin clear- any drugstore cleanser can help.  Just be aware that if you have sensitive skin, you'll have to work harder to find something.  Some lotions give you a natural "glow" from a teensy bit of fake tanner, but if that isn't your thing, you'll have to have healthy glowing skin the old fashioned way: eating right and staying hydrated.  A good diet will brighten up your skin and getting all the nutrient you need will give you a healthy look.  Good luck!

i have these really weird little hair "dots" on my nose; not inside but on it. its on either side and i think they're hair, but if it is, it's too short to pull out with tweezers. what are they and is there any way to get rid of them?

Hey chicky, those are most likely blackheads, or pores clogged with oil. Don't worry about 'em because everyone has them. It's just that they're so small that ya can't see 'em unless you get really close to someone. Betcha no one but you has ever even noticed yours - you've only seen them because you're dissecting your reflection in the mirror. Unfortunately, they're pretty hard to get rid of. The best thing you can do is use a heavy-duty face cleaner on a regular basis. The exfoliant salicylic acid is supposed to help, so look for something with that in it.

if i only put benzoyl peroxide on a cotton ball after washing my face, and wipe it on my skin, will it work like the benzoyl peroxide wash recomended under tip#1?????????? just wondering. thanx!

Hey girl!

Plain ol' benzoyl peroxide might be too strong for your face. Ask a parent or dermatologist/doctor for advice...they can often prescribe a great face wash with benzoyl peroxide in it.
