How to ace every class (even gym!) starting now

Check these out, too...

  • Burned out? 5 ways to get psyched for school again
  • 10 tips for acing your AP tests
  • 5 last-minute ways to lift your grades
  • 3 signs you need to give your study group the boot
  • How not to pull an all-nighter (and stay sane if you have to)
Wanna boost your scores sky-high this year? Yeah, we thought so. Wow Mom and Dad (and impress Teach, too), with the new-and-improved Y-O-U. Top of the class? Naturally. Here’s how to do it.

Get the 411

First off, you gotta know what the teacher is lookin’ for in an A+ student. So pay attention when they’re goin’ over the syllabus. Do they like a lot of class participation? Or is chewing gum one of their pet peeves? We’re not sayin’ you gotta be a teacher’s pet, but if you know what you should be shootin’ for, it’s whole lot easier to snag that A.

Extra credit: Chat up an upperclassmen who’s had this teacher before. Find out what makes her tick and what kind of behavior she rewards with bonus points.

Homework—it’s, um, not optional

Worst phrase ever, we know. But the truth is that homework really does help you learn the material, so if you’re doing it faithfully from day one, there’ll be a lot fewer cramming sessions before tests. You’ll save yourself stress, and learning things slowly over time will be a lot more effective than trying to shove everything into your brain the night of a test.
Extra credit: Gonna be out for a day? If you know in advance, get your HW in before you hit the road.

Bare necessities? Bah!

These may have worked for the animals in The Jungle Book, but they don’t really cut it in school. Handing in stuff that barely makes the grade will leave your report card hangin’ by a thread, and that is not how ya wanna start out the year. So whether you’ve got a project, a paper or a physical fitness test in gym, you need to try your very best. Even if you aren’t the best, teachers will notice if you’re really putting in effort, and they’ll reward you for it.

Extra credit: Ask for help before you start to struggle. Can't figure out a word problem in geometry? Approach your teacher after class, when she isn't rushing around, and ask her if you could maybe meet up after school for ten minutes to go over your trouble spots.

Plan perfect

Even if you’re not a planner, ya need to get one because if you forget to do an assignment, you’re gonna lose precious points. From get-go, start writing down your homework, your projects and oh yeah, your social life. That way, you know when you’ll have time to get the work done, and hopefully, you won’t end up leaving it ‘til the last minute.

Extra credit: Sometimes, extenuating circumstances get the best of even the brightest students. If you know you're going to have trouble completing a certain assignment on time, explain the issue to Teach ahead of time, just to give her a head's up. And even if you get that coveted extension, do your best to turn in your work on time.

Get your study on

You may think you don’t need to study because you already know all the info and your teacher is totally not strict. Well, think again, sistah. You should always study at least a little bit for every test because ya never know when your teach is gonna throw a curveball and leave your grade in the dust. Sometimes, the “easiest” teachers are actually the hardest because they don’t demand much in class but then expect you to know all the facts for the tests. So be safe, and study bit by bit – you’ll thank yourself later.

Extra credit: Do yourself a favor and find out what's on the test--and what format you can expect--before you hit the books. This will help ya zero in on what you really need to brush up on rather than wasting time.

What are your foolproof straight-A strategies?

this is my first year takin honors classes and its my first year in highschool and im on crutches. I stress a lot and my hair starts to fall out! i haven't gotten a B since elem. school and I don't want to start now. How do I stress less without dropping classes, cause I want to challenge myself since last year i wasn't. Thanks!

Hey girl,

take a breather and relax! A B is still a great grade, and you're doing super well just by being in honors classes! Make a schedule of what you need to do so that you can plan your studying time better. And talk to your parents and teachers about your stress -- they'll help you get through it and plan study skills to get through the year! You're doing great, so be proud of your accomplishments and don't forget to have fun!

So this year, Im trying to balance all honors classes plus one AP class. Now add to the mix that I am a serious dancer. Its only the second week and Im already stressed because I ran out of time to study for my AP test today and I practtically pulled my hair out! I reallyyyyy want to make this work, but I want to still find time to dance and have SOME free time so that I dont go insane. HELP!!!

Hey chica! Give it another week and try to settle into a rhythm, if you can't, you might have to drop something.  It isn't ideal, but if you're always stressed, it might be the healthiest choice! xoxo

It's not hard getting straight A's at all. Like the article said, homework is not optional.
- Homework counts for 20% at my school and it could make or break you.
- Keep your notes clean to study when needed and if you're struggling in a subject, ask for help. Don't expect the teacher to come to each and every student and ask if it's too confusing.
- ASK FOR EXTRA CREDIT. It really does help when you need those two or three points from that 90.
- Ask about where your grade is every once in a while, don't bug the teacher.
- If you're struggling in a subject, sit in the front.

I know what I'm talking about because I went from A and B+ student to having an almost 100 average.

Practice makes perfect! Stay after school and get help from a teacher. Or use a program to practice it over the summer such as Rosetta Stone. Just keep continuing with your classes and I'm sure you'll learn!

Hey girl! Lots of girls have concentration issues, and I would suggest talking to your doctor about them the next time you visit.  You can try to block out all other distractions (no tv, internet, phone) and maybe that will help.  Another way is to study in short periods of time and take small breaks to keep your energy up.  xxoo

Ok gals, here's a tip that might help. Its pretty plain, but trust me, it works. Really try to understand wut the teach is sayin. Dont just listen, but comprehend. Take out a dictionary or textbook or search for the same material with maybe more explanations. Also, try to get at least ten to thirty mins of homework done AT school. Instead of obsessing over cell phone cases when u might not even be allowed to have a cell phone out is totally not worth it compared to completing ur hw. Depending on wut grade ur in you could get half an assignment to three assignments done if u take the time. Maybe study a couple flash cards after u grab ur books from ur locker. Or once u finish lunch, pull out the pencils and paper or ur laptop and write the first paragraph of that essay, or even finish a worksheet. Just remeber to not do ur hw during a lesson, that would be so not smart. Hope this helps chicas.

Ok so can you start posting back to school stuff now? I only ask that because this year I'm going to order stuff online and it takes a looong time for me because of where I live. Also when you post the stuff, can you do some edgy looks. Like you do girly and preppy looks a lot but I dress darker. Like I kinda only wear band t-shirts,suspenders,skinny jeans, converse's and van's.Also (sorry this is long)but I start 6th grade this year and we finally get lockers! The only prob I have with that is I need some cute locker organizers. Do you know any places where I can get them cute but cheap. I don't have any brand-name stores around me ecpt for Wal-Mat and K-mart.I am so sorry this is so long!

Hey chica! I don't get to pick when stuff gets posted, but I'll pass on that you guys are gearing up for BTS! We try and do a good mix of light and dark stuff, and a lot of the pieces we put in our articles can be used if you want to dress a little edgier.  K-Mart and Walmart will def have cute organizers, but you can check online for some, too.  Try Target or Bed, Bath, & Beyond! xoxo

What about MUSIC? I can barely remember the notes and stuff! tell me how to ace music!

Hey girlie,

Music is ALLLLL about practice! The more you're around the sheet music, the notes, and the actual instrument, the better you'll do in the class. Don't goof off during class and really listen to your teacher. At home, don't skimp on practicing - spend at least 30-45 minutes every night playing your instrument. Practice a new song or brush up on an old one. Over time, you'll develop the "habit" of playing and it'll feel natural!

MOD MOD MOD MOD!
I have a bunch of huge summer assignments for my AP and Honor's classes and I haven't started. I don't know where to start. I have to read this super long, boring book AND take detailed notes as I go along. Plus I have a 5 page worksheet. And that's just history. I also have to take Cornell notes on another really long and boring book, then compare and contrast the book to present day and write an essay. Then make a fake newspaper from the time period the book takes place in. That's all for English. I'm not exaggerating when it comes to the lengths of these books. They are really thick with tiny writing. I keep trying to read, because I usually love to. But every time I try, I can't do it. I'm already so busy with my life. What do I do??????

Hey girlie,

I totally know where you're coming from - we've been there with the crazy summer assignments! But the truth is, there's no trick to it. You can complain about it and list all the stuff you have to do alllll summer long, but that's not going to get the work done. What you have to do is pick one project and finish it. You might have to skip some sun time, a trip to the pool, some summer TV, or sleeping in some weekends. But you have to get it done, so pick one thing: reading the book is a good way to start. Get rid of all distractions and tell yourself the truth - you're running out of time. Focus and you can do this, one step at a time!

I really want to buy two things but i can't choose. I really want to get a pet fish ( i can take care of it i have before) or buy an ihome i really want both but only have $30 and thats how much both cost (fish food and bowl...etc) i also want to go on a theater camp in new york and thats $3000, id have to show my perents that im responsible enough to go to new york on my own by saving up. which should i do? the fish or ihome or camp? thanks so much in advance!!Smile

Hey girlie! If you really want to go to camp, you have to show your parents that you can be responsible with money, so if this camp is something you have wanted for awhile, why not save up?  You can always get a fish or an iHome at a later time, but you won't always be able to go away to camp.  Unless you are desperate to get a fish or you have can't wait to get an iHome for a few weeks or months (if it's on sale or something), then try saving up for camp! xoxo

My foolproof strategies for getting straight As are to organize your notes really well and review material every night, whether or not I have an upcoming test or quiz.

1. Write. Notes. Fast! But in a readable handwriting.
2. When you get home, create study guides! This is foolproof -- before you text your bestie I'M BORED!, do this, and really put effort into it -- really when you do this, time flys and you have a more accurate, and more official material to study!
3. Type the fast notes into a study guide.

I did study guides for finals, and I got 100 in each subject!

2. Do your homework! You really get the gist of the material, and it counts as a quiz grade!

I'm an A+ student, and you cannot go wrong with this!

Can someone help with locker and desk organization? I always overstuff my locker! I had 6 coats in there! And I never know what's important to put in there and what's. not! Please comment on my profile on tips for locker and desk organization, and I'll give school-relative tips.

My biggest thing is starting on an assignment the DAY it's assigned. This may seem like a bore, but even brain-storming goes a long way, and it pays off and it prevents procrastination and last-minute half-finished projects, which are dreadful! I also have a 20 minute rule where I have to go over all the material we covered for the day and the notes, and if I need the practice, I'll do a few extra problems on a specific area and use sticky notes to post some questions I have for the teach all over my notebook!! I also have a certain strategy for note-taking! All this stuff lands me great marks Smile

I agree with the second tip. Seriously, stay on top of your homework. Honestly, the main reason I got A's in AP Physics, Chem, and AP Calc last year was because I did my homework on time. The kids who put off their homework wound up unprepared for the next class, and either got bad grades or spent days, sometimes weeks, trying to catch up. Especially if you're in an advanced and/or fast-paced class, you've gotta do the homework - on time, that's important - or you'll end up drowning in it.

I am having a birthday party soon, and I have a friend who is coming that isn't allowed to watch anything other than G or PG. My other two friends who are coming (and me) all like movies like Valentine's Day, What Not To Wear, 19 Kids and counting, and we can't do any of that. So, what should I do? Should I stick to stuff like cupcake wars or something?

Hey girl,

I'm sure that there are some PG movies that your other friends like as well! If you can't agree on any movie, just put on some cool TV shows, or don't even have the TV on at all. You can just play music while you guys chat or do other things.

when it comes to creative projects that teachers assign, they love when you think out of the box. I always go all-out and have fun with it. Sometimes I even forget I'm doing homework! The result? A+

My foolproof straight-A strategies are always taking notes in class and going to see the teacher before a test or quiz.

MOD MOD MOD
I have this constant urge to try to help people and make people happy! I want to go on a mission trip next summer, but what can I do till then?! The only animal shelter around here is about 40 mins away and my mom doesn't want to spend the gas money, which I respect cuz moneys really tight for us right now! I'd tutor at school, but you have to be a junior or senior at my school and I'm gonna be a sophmore this year! I go to a really small school so we don't have any clubs that could get me involved with helping the community! I don't know what to do! I feel so dorky when I ask my friends for ideas cuz they aren't as into it as I am! I really want to interact and improve peoples/animals/my communities lives! I'm gonna babysit an dogwalk this school year for money to use for causes such as these! I'd like to make scarves and hats for the homeless shelter so my mom can drop them off on her way to work on mondays! Any other ideas!?!? Thanks MOD

Hey sweetie!

How great that you've found a passion for helping others! That is something to be very proud of. Even though your school doesn't already have a club for service, you can start one! Talk to a teacher or administrator and offer to be the president of the club - you can round up others, bounce ideas off each other, and come up with ways to help others together. You can also ask your mom if there are any local soup kitchens that you can volunteer at. Do some research about local charities - often, their websites will have a section that tells you about upcoming volunteer events or ways you can help their organization.
