Girl groups we're hoping have a comeback

Trends come and go with the influx of new years and new seasons, but they always have a habit of repeating themselves. This is certainly true in music: Everywhere we look, a boy band is reuniting and preparing to put out a new single. Unfortunately, girl bands are not taking the same cue. So, we investigated some of our favorite girl groups gone south—hopefully they’ll make comebacks…that are bigger and better than the boy bands!

Spice Girls

This U.K. girl band came together in 1994 and churned out chart-topping hits such as “ Wannabe” and “Headlines.”  Their astronomical success in ’96 through ’98 were unfortunately followed by group strife, and their eventual disbandment. Various members have gotten together after the break-up for different appearances; and they’ve had one major reunion, but it didn’t last very long.  The gang’s rumored to reunite and perform at the Olympics closing ceremonies Aug. 12. Could this be true?!

Destiny’s Child

An American R&B girl group that made a huge impression on music in the ’90s and ’00s, they’ve had multiple successful singles like “Say My Name,” “Survivor,” “Soldier,” and “Bootylicious.” The group went through multiple member changes, but ultimately had an extremely successful 14 years together.  We’d still love to see ’em blow up the stage one again.

Danity Kane

This all-American girl group was created on the third installment of the reality TV series Making the Band. Their hit singles include “Damaged” and “Show Stopper.” However, soon after their formation, tension between group members and manager/mentor Sean “Diddy” Combs, caused the gang to fall apart at the seams. They never were able to produce a third studio album.

Pussycat Dolls

This girl pop group was formed in 2004 by Robin Antin and released many different songs, which had a pop-meets-burlesque vibe. Their hit singles? “Don’t Cha,” “Stickwitu” and “Buttons.” The group performed from 2004-2009, and eventually disbanded, with a second revival of the group, featuring completely different members, happened in 2009. While the second coming of the PCD is great, we’d still love to see the original dolls come back into the spotlight!

Dixie Chicks

This four-women country music band came together in 1989, and produced multiple albums with hit singles “ Wide Open Spaces,” “Cowboy Take Me Away,” and “Not Ready to Make Nice.” The group became involved in widespread political controversy after publicly disapproving of the war in Iraq and they’re currently on hiatus to be with their families. Hopefully this group can make a comeback soon—they are role models not only in music, but in the realm of freedom of expression.

The Cheetah Girls

We’d like to consider them the Disney queens. The band became largely popular after the success of the Disney Channel original movie The Cheetah Girls. How could you forget their songs “So Bring it On” and “Fuego.” Shortly after the premiere of their “One World” movie and tour, though, the group was no more. These girls, now women, are such talented vocalists and dancers—we hope to see them together again someday soon!

Which girl group do you want to see reunited? Blog about it, babes.
