Public school forcing girls to take pregnancy tests--or else

Imagine that you’ve just started a new year at school when rumors begin to fly. Your classmates are whispering that you’re pregnant, and whether you are or not, once the principal catches wind of it, you’ll be forced to take a pregnancy test…or be kicked out of school. Sound like a far-out story? It’s not, if you attend Delhi Charter School in Delhi, La.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) recently discovered a student policy that dates back to 2006. The school reserves the right to force female students suspected of being pregnant to submit to a pregnancy test and doctor’s visit. If the student is pregnant, she will no longer be allowed to take classes on campus—though she does have the option to home school. If the student refuses to take the test, she can either home school or “seek other educational opportunities,” per the school’s policy manual.

Delhi Charter School infers that a girl who becomes pregnant is a girl who doesn’t adhere to the school’s moral code or standards of excellence in character and academics. She’s a girl who isn’t desirable within the community. And if she challenges the system? Out she goes.

The ACLU reports that about 70 percent of teen girls who give birth end up leaving school, and one of the reasons cited for that is discrimination, which is illegal. Regardless of the legalities, policies like this certainly aren’t girl-friendly. Schools should be safe places where students can learn. They shouldn’t be bullied—not by fellow students, not by teachers or administrators and certainly not by inane policies that disregard their best interests.

What do you think of this policy, babes?  Tell us in the comments.

I can understand why they did it (teenage pregnancy is disgusting once you think about it), but they took it too far. Getting pregnant 4 years earlier than you should has nothing to do with school, and vice versa. No wonder it's federally illegal.

If the school says shes the one shaming her community, what about the boy. He was involved. Her deserves this as much as she does. This is such a sexist issue! Because he is the "man" doesn't mean they should lighten his load! Kick him out of school and make him work with the women he chose and the child who is 50% him! On the teen mom shows the guy leaves to "better his life". And the parents support him! If shes shaming her community so bad, they should say he made it burn in flames! I dont see anything being right about telling a girl you love them having uprotected sex and then leaving because you are overwhelmed!

Thts sad. I know teen pregnancy isnt the best choice, but what if a girl didnt want to be pregnant, like sexual assault or something.

Pregnant or not, every girl deserves the right to a good school education!

That is sooo messed up of the school. The principal is humiliating them and making it seem like you no longer have a chance in a good education. It's not like you no longer have a chance in school or life! It's also going to make it harder for the girl to get supported by her friends. When something this scary and downgrading happens to you, you should be able to get as much support as possible, and that includes your school. It's also sexist. Does nothing happen to the guy? Is he just ignored? this is just wrong on so many levels. It should be illegal.
