Beat stress before ya head back to school

Check these out, too...

  • 13 things your school could do to help ya stress less
  • Why unplugging this weekend is the best thing you can do for your brain
  • I can't stop tearing my hair out--help!
  • In the News: Exercise really does calm you down
  • What to do when your parents are worried about something big
Being a girl can be tough, right? If we didn’t have enough on our plates with a whole load of history homework and trying to decode what the cute guy’s text really meant, we also have little brothers that seem to think annoying us is their day job, untimely zit emergencies and friend fall-outs. If not dealt with well, these things can build up and have a big effect on our mood and health. These tips are your ticket to a totally chill summer. Phew!

Exercise

Scientists have proven that doing just 20 minutes of exercise a day can really boost your mood. This could be anything from riding your bike to jogging home from your bestie’s house. Anything that gets your heart beating faster than normal will do tons for your health and happiness levels.

Eat well

Now, no one’s saying that you should give up your favourite summer BBQ treats, but try to enjoy everything in moderation. Snack on stress-busting foods like fish, fruit and vegetables. Opt for oranges, with immune system-boosting vitamin C, and nuts, which can help lower your blood pressure.

Have some ‘you’ time

Between camp, family vacay and the demands of your buds, life can get crazy busy, even when you’re on vacation. Make sure to schedule time for Y-O-U. Recharging your batteries will help you feel like you can conquer the world…or at least Friday night’s big babysitting job.

Get plenty of sleep

Squeaking by on not enough sleep can help turn a bad day into a worse one in just a few seconds. Before you know it, you’re grouchy or teary or totally unbearable. Make an effort to power down your gadgets and catch those zzz’s—even though it’s summer, ya still need ‘em! Shoot for eight hours, minimum, and toss in a nap if you just can’t keep your eyes open.

Think positive thoughts

Excited about a friend’s birthday party next week? Or looking forward to your favorite aunt coming to stay for the weekend? Whatever it is that is making you happy, think about it when life starts getting’ ya down. See the glass as being half full and you’ll feel the benefits instantly.  By putting life’s stresses into perspective we can begin to feel more cheerful and relaxed.

How are you staying stress-free before school starts up?

I'm staying stress-free by spending time with my friends and family. They always manage to make me feel better.

MOD MOD MOD!
I have to get cavities filled at the dentist, and I'm freaking out! I hate needles. Does the whole process hurt, and what exactly happens? Thanks.

Hey girl, the only part that should hurt a li'l bit is when they make the first injection to numb the area around your tooth. And that'll just be a tiny prick that probably won't bother you much. After that, the only weird part is hearing the drill grinding on your tooth. So if you're thinkin' that might freak you out, bring your iPod and some earbuds to drown it out. It'll be over before ya know it!

MOD MOD MOD what should you do when you almost pass out? it happened to me at soccer practice tonight but i pulled myself out in time and my coach took care of me., and i know that i really need to stay hydrated and drink lots of water, but what about gatorade? and can i eat food? am i supposed to take a cold shower or something? thanks so much!

Hey babe,

You need to stay hydrated most of all.  And make sure you've had enough to eat before you start getting really serious on the field.  Sometimes, this can happen when you have low blood sugar, in which case the electrolytes in Gatorade and snacks are great for this.

It's mostly about prevention!

To relax I listen to The Shins. If the lyrics seem depressing to you, you just don't understand them or me.

Take the stairs more than once. When you’re at home, run up and down the stairs three or four times before heading to your room. It’s a sneaky way to stay active.
