Get fit before the bell rings--without hitting the gym

There’s no way you can fit in a trip to the gym or a super-long run before school starts, but that doesn’t mean ya can’t exercise at least a little bit. Here are eight cinchy moves that you can do right in your house. Work ‘em into your morning routine, and you’ll be surprised at the awesome results.

 

Bed Bicycles

Lay on your bed with your knees bent, like you’re going to do sit-ups. Lift your feet off the bed, and put your hands behind your head. Bring your right elbow to meet your left knee in a twisting crunch, and at the same time, put your right leg out straight about 6 inches above the bed. Then do the same on the other side, bringing your left elbow to meet your right knee. Continue alternating like that, and do 15 touches on each elbow (30 total).

 

Twistin’ Sheets

Sit on your bed with your knees bent, and lift your feet off the bed. You’ll have to rock back a little bit, but stay sitting up as much as you can. Clasp your hands together, and bring them down to touch the bed on your right side. Then twist the opposite direction, and touch the bed on your left side with your clasped hands. Touch each side 20 times for a total of 40 twists, and never let your feet or back touch the bed.

 

Snooze Button

Sit on the edge of your bed, and put your hands on either side of your bod with your fingers facing the same direction as your toes. Then walk your feet out until your bod is almost straight, forming a 45-degree angle with the floor. Slowly lower yourself toward the floor by bending your elbows. Stop just before your butt meets the floor, and then straighten your elbows again. Do 25 dips, and try not to move anything but your arms the entire time.

 

Floor Kisses

Put your feet up on your bed and your hands on the floor. Walk forward on your hands ‘til your bod is straight. Do 30 push-ups from that position by bending your elbows until your nose almost touches the floor and then straightening them out again.

 

Lunge for the Day

Do lunges on your way down the hall to the bathroom. When you step forward with your right foot, make it a large step so that only your left toe is still touching the ground behind you. Drive your left knee toward the floor, and be careful not to let your right knee go past your toes. Then bring your left foot up to meet your right one so that you’re standing up straight. Repeat the process by stepping with your left foot. Continue all the way down the hall.

 

Toe Tricks

Pause on your way down the stairs, and stand facing them. Back your feet up ‘til your heels hang off a stair. Then go up on your tiptoes and back down. Raise yourself up on your toes 20 times.

 

Don’t Pack Light!

Grab your backpack full of heavy textbooks, and hold it in your right hand. Put your left hand and left knee up on your bed, leaving your right foot on the ground. Your back should be straight and parallel to the floor. Then bend your right elbow, keeping it close to your body, and bring your backpack up to your ribcage. Hold it there for a few seconds, and then slowly lower it back down (but not so far that it touches the floor). Do that 15 times on your right side, and then switch to do the exercise 15 times on your left.

 

Fancy Footwork

When you’re going down the hall, turn sideways and do a grapevine as fast as you can. A grapevine starts when you step to your right with your right foot. Then cross your left foot in front of your right one. Next, step to the right with your right foot again, and cross your left foot behind it. Continue down the hall. On your next trip, face the same direction, but go the opposite way, starting by putting your left foot out.

I have a problem with junk food. I crave it all the time, even when I'm not hungry. I always sneak into the pantry and take tiny bites of fatty foods, and by the end of the day it all adds up. It feels good when I eat, but I feel guilty afterwards. I'm thin now, but I'm know that all this eating will eventually catch up to my weight and health. How do I help my craving?

Hey girl,

When you feel hungry, try eating fats that are good for you, like nuts and avocado, and sweets that are good for you, like fruits. If you stick to natural goods, you won't want the processed ones! If you're worried about your eating habits, though, you should speak with a trusted adult like a parent, teacher, guidance counselor or older family member about your habits and how you're feeling so that they can help you sort things out.

I have, like, this red flat pimple on my nose. It's kind of like a blister and my nose hurts when I rub my nose. Is this a cold sore??? If so, how do I treat it - and fast!!! It looks like a zit!!!

It's completely healthy to lose about 1-2 pounds each week. I know it doesn't feel very fast, but it's safe to lose 25 pounds over the course of about 4 months <3 With healthy diet and exercise, of course!

Hey chica, walking is less strain on your joints, but it's not gonna give ya much cardio. Running is way better exercise, and as long as ya don't overdo it, it's definitely a better workout.

My thighs and legs are really sore from my two days of volleyball tryouts ( sadly, i didn't make the team. But, there's always next year!!). What can i do to make them less sore?

i have thick, wavy/frizzy hair. i straighten it, but it takes forever (a half hour ish) b/c it's so thick. i won't not straighten it, but is there any way to not take so long without getting a perm or anything?

Depending if your hair gets oily, you can go a day or two extra without washing your hair. That way, you don't have to spend time straightening it every single day.

So this year I can try out for a sport. I really want to do volleyball but I'm not that good. I have been practicing all summer and I've only improved a little. Then I think about cheer leading and that sounds like fun but I don't want to be known as the sassy little cheerleader stereotype that all the cheerleaders at my school go by. What should I do?

 

Hey girl!

You should do the sport that makes you the happiest and the one which you have the most fun doing. You shouldn't worry about the stereotypes of any sport. If you think you'd enjoy cheerleading, do it. It doesn't matter what other people say about it. If you love volleyball, then who cares if you haven't improved that much? You'll definitely improve over the course of the season.

Hi! So i was wondering what some good workouts are to get rid of love handles and armpit bulge. I'm a dancer, so both are very noticeable when I'm wearing a leotard. It's not bad, but some things make it really noticeable. ThAnKs! Smile

 

Hey girl!

For the armpit bulge you should do dips. Find a chair or couch and sit down. Then, scoot your butt off and keep your knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Hold on to the chair with your hands. Then, slowly lower yourself down closer to the floor using your arms, and then push yourself back up. For love handles, I would suggest doing interval training. Run for two minutes at a comfortable pace and then run for 30 seconds as fast as you can. Then, go back to two minutes at your comfortable pace. Interval training can be really good for targeting belly fat. Good luck!

Then i was gonna run today but now it raining and theirs a storm... Whats a way i can still do a work out like alot but inside....1.i just dont know a work out that i can do...

3.Should i keep a journal about my work outs and what i eat?

 

Hey girl! Be careful about keeping a journal of what you eat and how much you work out- that can make it easy to slip into dangerous territory and develop eating issues.  It's fine to take a couple days off from workouts (you should take at least 1 or 2 a week), so while you're inside, you can either take a break or focus on doing strength exercises like wall sits, crunches, and push ups.  xoxo

I recently got a really bad sunburn from marching band camp. How can I get rid of it? Or at least make it a little less red. I also have horrible tan lines from my tank top and socks. Thanks so much!!!!!




Hey girlie,

Unfortunately, the only thing that will really "get rid" of sunburn is time. Try to be patient as it fades! In the meantime, try using an aloe lotion or gel to ease the pain and cut down on redness. They can also help keep it from peeling, which can get so gross if the burn is really bad. <3 Hang in there! And don't forget the sunscreen next time!

ok so my bEsites (1 in 7th grade and 2 in 8grade) we are going to the mall on Saturday amd it's also my cousins bday and it's in the mall too! So I'm only going to stay for an hour then go with my friends to go shopping ! ok so i am having big problems right now. Mainly it is with my dad. He always yells at me for little stuff, and i never get to go anywere. he has never hit me or done anything physical,but he is really rude and stuff. I have no brothers or sisters wich really sucks, because i have seen nobody my own age for the past 3 weeks. I have only texted one of my friends all summer because none of my others will reply. I am really lonely. also my parents never let me go anywere, like ive been to 3 sleepovers my entire life, and im twelve. i live in a really small town, so like, walmart is the only hangout. My parents get mad at me if i even get out of their sight there, much less hang out with my friends. I have never been anywere in the town like to mcdonalds, chicken express(that's all we have) without parental supervision, and so i look like a dork with my parents in the booth next to me. i really need help!!!




 Hey girlie! Your parents are just trying to protect you.  I know they seem overbearing, but they're doing it out of love.  Talk to your mom calmly about having some friends come over for a sleepover (that way your parents can supervise).  After a few times, your mom will see your friends' parents and maybe be more willing to let you spend time alone with your friends.  xoxo

These are good, but I think the best and easiest way to stay fit is to start a sport of some kind. I swim, which is great. But any sport is great, volleyball, basketball, karate. It so much more simple! You just do that fun sport on a regular basis and eat healthy and you don't have to worry about what workout to do and all that.

Hey girl! I don't think the two are connected. The gel your mom gave probably numbed you a little bit, so the relaxing feeling was just your skin relaxing after being irritated.  You have to be really stressed to not get your period, and sometimes your first period comes without warning.  xoxo

Hey girlie! A flatter stomach comes with weight loss and abs- work that core doing crunches! The only way to have a lifestyle change, though, is to make sure you are losing weight the RIGHT way- no crash dieting!  The amount of weight you want to lose might take awhile, but healthy eating (meaning you eat enough calories for you body to work, about 2,000 a day) and daily exercise will get you there!
