Flirting game foul

One time I was at my friend's house, and she had a few guys from school come over and we had a big sleepover. We were playing party games, and I was flirting up a storm with an exceptionally cute basketball player. My friend noticed, and she very loudly announced, "Gosh, Belle, stop hitting on Luke!" Needless to say, I didn't go back to her house after that!

So I really like this guy and he told me he likes me back. And we talk every night through email, but he isn't focusing on school work and he is missing a lot of hw. How should I tell him he needs to focus on school work without telling him to back off or sound mean?
