What's wrong with your shape? (Hint: Nothing!)

Shapewear is a term that’s used to describe tight-fitting undergarments, like Spanx, that make the body appear thinner by keeping tummies and curves tucked in and smoothed over. Spanx used to be thought of as only for older women, but now, girls as young as 13 are trying ‘em on for size, according to ABC News. For stars like Miley Cyrus and ordinary high schoolers alike, these tummy-tuckers have become an every-day article of clothing, which is damaging to more than just their self-image.

The main problem with girls relying on shapewear to feel good about their appearances is that they’re not confident with their own bodies. Even skinny girls feel like any curve is taboo, and they’re developing an unhealthy image of themselves. What’s worse is that the tight-fitting spandex is teaching them to ignore pain in order to look better. And if they don’t mind that pain of being seriously sucked in, then what’s next?

When teens are ignoring the pain of shapewear, they’re actually ignoring what could be a serious problem. Doctors have seen cases of gastrointestinal problems, nerve damage and bladder infections all caused by wearing shapewear. The problem is that the spandex is just too tight, and it’s squeezing their internal organs and nerves. So the bottom line? Skip the Spanx, spend some time in front of the mirror embracing the gorgeousness of your bod, imperfections and all, and show Y-O-U a whole lotta love.

MOD MOD MOD MOD i would NEVER wear shapewear, but i'm also not entirely happy with the way i look. it's not like i'm fat, more like i'm weak and not fit. i hate it. the only workout i'm good at is karate and i'm not gonna be in that until January!!! plus i HATE running, i don't have a legit bike, and my parents wouldn't wanna pay for classes. what can i do?!??!!?(not videos either). i'm all outta optionsFrown

hey! you could try doing crunches or situps at home?

MOD MOD MOD
i don't wear shapewear, i wear loose spandex for volleyball, thats it, but my stomach bulges, a LOT! so, since like 4th grade (im in 8th grade) ive been sucking my stomach in, and it doesnt really hurt, but could that do damage? im really worried!!
thanks! xoxo

hey! I'm not sure, you'd have to ask your doctor, but in my opinion I don't think that sounds damaging.
