Period 101: Dealin' with Aunt Flo when school's in session

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • What stinks down south?
Once school is back in session, it’s a pretty good bet that you’re not gonna be able to hole up in your room ‘til your period passes each month. But don’t worry – we’ve got ya covered. Here are a few easy things you can do to avoid worryin’ about your monthly visitor all through the school day.

Plan Ahead

Before you go to bed at night, figure out how often you’ll wanna change your pad or tampon at school the next day. If your flow is pretty heavy, ya probably wanna hit the ladies room every 2 hours or so, but if it’s lighter, you might be able to get away with goin’ every 4 hours. Whatever you decide, count up the amount of pads and tampons you’ll need to get ya through the day, and put ‘em in your backpack. That way, you won’t have to worry about forgettin’ to pack your essentials before you leave to catch the bus the next morning.

Extra Protection

If your flow is super heavy and you’re terrified of it leakin’ through, wear a tampon and a bigger, extra-absorbent pad. Better safe than sorry, right? And if your flow isn’t really heavy but ya still worry, you can put on a pantiliner to catch any excess from your tampon. That way you won’t be runnin’ to the bathroom every 10 seconds, and you can actually pay attention to what your Teach has to say.

Save Time

You’ve gotta hit the bathroom between classes, but you won’t have time after runnin’ back to your locker. So plan ahead a bit, and carry your books for your next class to the one before. Yeah, it might be a li’l extra work, but it’s only for one week per month. And it’s way better than takin’ your chances by skipping a bathroom trip when your period is in town!

Be Prepared

You never know when your flow is suddenly gonna get way worse, so stick an extra pad or tampon in your pencil case or purse, just in case. That way you’ll have a back-up in class, and if you’re feelin’ the need to run to the restroom, you won’t have to go all the way to your locker and miss tonsa class time.

Just Ask

If you didn’t get the chance to hit the ladies’ room before class and it’s well past time for a change, it’s totally okay to tell your Teach what’s up. She’ll understand that you’ve got an emergency and that you aren’t just askin’ to go to the bathroom so you can skip out on her lecture. And if you need a pad or tampon, she probably has an extra stash in her desk that you can raid, too. Wait, your teacher is a guy? Well, he won’t have extra pads and tampons, but he will respect you if you tell him discreetly that you have a “female emergency.” So don’t be shy – teachers are there to help, after all.

I'm only 13 'and I've had 3 periods..but my body thinks its two years younger I'm almost 14..but still should I be worried? I've gotten my periods pretty regular and every month since I've started..I've heard they usually aren't regular the first year..does that mean anything? And my last question is I know I'm about to start soon..but it is driving me crazy I haven't yet because I can just feel I am! Any advice? Sorry for so many questions!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
My mom took me to the girl doctor today because I wouldn't stop complaining about my cramps. Turns out I have some sort of disability that makes me have really painful cramps and I forgot what it was called but it starts with a d, and it has something to do wih my uterus contracting way too much. Anyways she gave my some special naproxen medicine (these pills) and my mom told me to one as soon as we got home but I didn't cause I'm too scared to swallow it whole. (It's like the size of a quarter but thicker) now my mom won't let me take another one cause she thinks I just took one a couple hours ago, but my cramps are killing me. It's too embarrassing to tell her that I was too scared to swallow it though.

Hey girl, even if you're embarrassed or you feel bad about not taking the pill, it's important to be honest with your mom and tell her you didn't take it so that you can get the meds you need.  The good news is, even though those pills look big and scary, they go down more easily than you might think.  Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD!!!
Do you have to have the symptoms multiple times around the same time each month for awhile before you get your period? Because reading the other comments they talk about getting symtpoms around the same time each month but never their period. Thanks for all your help

hey! some people usually experience symptoms the day before they get it
