Perks of Being a Wallflower's Mae Whitman talks girl power

With the classic teen novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower being turned into a movie (out this Friday, Sept. 21), we couldn’t wait to talk to one of the film’s stars, Mae Whitman. She plays the spunky Mary Elizabeth, the first girlfriend of main character Charlie (played by Logan Lerman). Read on to hear Mae dish all about life, books and high school.

GL: Why should GL girls check out The Perks of Being a Wallflower when it heads to theaters this week?
Mae: There’s no reason not to! It’s a smart, incredible, coming-of-age story. Normally when that term is used, I run for the mountains because those years are so important and emotional and you want somebody to capture it in a way that feels as beautiful as your childhood was. [But] the (producers) definitely do this without a doubt—you’ll get lost in it.

The movie follows the highs and lows of high school life. If you were to be given a school yearbook superlative right now, what do you think you would get?

Mae: I would probably be most… relaxed or “lowest drama leader.” I feel like these days, I’m trying to just take it easy with no drama.

If you could swap lives with any book character right now, who would it be?
I just read The Maltese Falcon (by Dashiell Hammett) and there are some amazing strong female characters in there.

In your opinion, what is the biggest perk of being a girl?
Female intuition. I feel that we really have a power to be strong and present with our hearts and our minds at the same time. It’s a magical gift!
