Teen wins seat in Uganda parliament

Who says teens can’t make a difference? Proscovia Oromait, 19, was just elected to Uganda’s parliament representing the largely impoverished area of Usuk. She will assume the seat vacated by her father upon his death in July.  Her victory was a landslide, per Global Post—Proscovia received more than double the votes of her nearest competitor, and beat out seven other politicians for the post.

Funnily enough, Proscovia is so young, she hasn't even voted yet. Though naysayers scoff at the idea of a 19-year-old representing such a troubled region, she remains confident in her abilities to champion the interests of those who voted for her. “It’s not about the age," she says. “It’s about the brain.”

Like her father before her, Proscovia seeks to dedicate herself to issues that will improve her locale, like building roads, fighting cattle rustling and improving education. She is the youngest member of an African parliament, and many hope she will inspire youth everywhere to raise their voices and make a difference.

Bravo, we say! What do you think?

Good for her! Africa is in desperate need of gender equality and this is exactly what needs to happen for that to be obtained! Yay for Girls!

I think that as long as she is up for the challenge and is smart about her decisions she should be fine. She will need to be mature but having a younger member of Parliament could bring in new ideas. Congrats!!! I hope you do great Proscovia!!! Smile

Not that I'm not all for teens making a difference and all, but a teen in parliament? And representing a struggling area? It just seems like a teen, no matter how smart she is, would be ready to make that kind of big decisions, mentally or emotionally. I know that all the teens I know aren't.
